Somebody should create a THC pill that made you high without having to smoke anything. Now THAT would be a good idea!
I don't know much about the kinds of pot they smoke for medical purposes, does it not get you high or something?
All the pot I've ever smoked has gotten me high, and never gotten me sick. Except one time I ate a lot of doritos and cookies, then I puked because I ate too much. But it wasn't caused by the intoxicating effect, just my own dumbass appetite.
I've actually changed my habits. When I do smoke now, I don't eat. I just have a little water or something. But I've only smoked about 5 or 6 times in the last year.

I cannot deal with you people while stoned. I'd rather watch movies.
I'd have to agree with DetoitDave's assessment of the drug. There are no safe drugs. They all give and they all take away. However, it should be a decision made between doctor and patient, not Congress.
Finally, Padma, you aren't doing all that much to yourself if you only partake occassionally. Okay, the paranoia, when you get it (which isn't always, or for me, all that often) really sux. But it is a lot of fun. It feels good, that's why people do it too themselves. Some people lack self-control when it comes to pot, and do way too much, but that can be true of eating or excercising or just about anything.
Moderation is the key. As for avoiding alcohol, you are really missing out on one of the true joys of life. I can understand not wanting to be drunk, but a little buzz doesn't hurt unless you're tryuing to operate heavy machinery or the like. In the meantime, you miss out on the finer things in life, like the tastes and aromas of wine, the variety of quality beers, single malt scotch, saki, etc. Great alcohol has a wonderful flavor and smell, and, in moderation, can enhance a meal.

OK, Che. I obviously wasn't clear in my earlier post. Let me try again.

That's just it! For me, it DOESN'T feel good!
Otherwise, I can largely agree with your post. And I DO still occasionally have a glass with a meal, or at a party.
(Of course, maybe my nose is too sensitive, or something, but alcohol stinks! I can do wine, and some mixed drinks, but I can no longer even get beer past my nose.

Simple reason: I don't want to be a criminal for something that I do to myself, alone, and in my own home, without harming anyone else. Marijuana in my region is a cottage industry that means a stable income for people who wish to live as much outside the system as possible, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Marijuana is illegal because it used largely by people who have very little political clout, because Randolph-Hearst saw it as a threat to his papermill industry, and because it would prove very troublesome to tax.
I have been smoking pot for a year now and my marks at school have not deteriorated, I remain in the top band of every subject I do (probably because just about all my subjects appeal to creative or abstract thought, e.g. english and music).
Just about everyone I know has at least tried it, and for everyone I know who does do it, they worry more about the health risks involved (and I'm not gonna totally sing it's praises, it IS bad for you), than it's illegality. Prohibition does not work.
Legalize? Why the **** not?

How many of you Americans here actually vote? I would assume most of the posters here are male between 15-25. Unfortunately not many young people vote. Make your voices heard. That's the only way things are going to change.

This just in. In Memphis, TN the driver of a day-care's van was found to have a bag of marijuana in his pants during his autopsy. The accident he was involved in killed 4 preschool children in addition to himself. Tests to determine whether he was on marijuana at the time of the accident are under way.
Well at least these kids won't be bothered by marijuana any more.

Driving under the influence would still be very, very illegal, Doctor. I'm sure you're aware of that.

Defining "under the influence" of marijuana is much more difficult than defining under the influence of alcohol. There is a farily consistent relationship between blood levels and the degree of intoxication of alcohol because in the body alcohol is distributed between blood, the other extracellular fluids, and the intracellular fluids. Therefore the level of alcohol in the blood corresponds to its level in the brain. The same is not true for marijuana, which tends to accumulate in the brain while being cleared from the blood. Marijuana can of course be detected in the urine even once cleared from the blood because minute amounts diffusing back into the blood from brain cells is rapidly cleared from the blood by the kidneys and concentrated in the urine. Field testing for marijuana via urine samples is generally out of the question, but many police departments carry devices for detecting alcohol in the breath.
In order to enforce a law against diving under the influence of marijuana every traffic offender would have to be taken back to the police station to urinate. It would also mean that you could be charged even though you last smoked up to two weeks ago. Laws against driving under the influence of marijuana just aren't practical to enforce.

Wow.
That's a new one on me. Don't really know how to respond to that.
I certainly salute your bravery, if not your Quixotic opinion.
