There's not that many issues.

Here's the main issue:
Alberta is very conservative, the rest of the country is very liberal. That's what everything boils down to. But don't forget -- It's Quebec that's the distinct society. They speak French!

I normally want to avoid ardent flaming, but in your case...

How ignorant can you be buddy?

You must be dumber than a sack of hammers. Try to follow the bouncing ball... The farmers don't want the CWB in good times or bad. Got that? Understand? They don't like being slaves. Hard to comprehend? Maybe for you.

If you think that farmers will never need help, and therefore should never get it, that's fine. Except that you go way beyond that and hold up the CWB as a help to farmers.

Well clusterf*ck. Get this. How much help is an agency that is not funded by the government? Do you actually have a clue as to what the CWB does?

I didn't think so. So for you ignorant b*tt h*mps, I'll spell it slowly and use small words. Get this. They force the farmers to sell the wheat to them. They sell the wheat to foreign and domestic markets. They keep a large fee for their adminstration (sorry if that had too many syllables). They distribute the remaining funds to the growers. You bet, Jonnie. The CWB is sure a way for the farmers to get money from the governement. Your ignorance is beyond comprehention.

Well Jack, you do not even have a clue as to why the CWB was formed in the first place do you? No, you couldn't buy a clue if Alex was selling them at a discount.

The CWB was formed because grain merchants were preying on the isolation of farmers. During the depth of the depression they would deflate the price paid to farmers. Then because of the drought they would inflate the price sold to the mills. Pretty simple, eh?

Do you think such conditions are likely to happen again? Are you that inbred?

Tell you what. I think you are the big bang of stupid. If you were a singularity of stupid all the other singularities would circle your magnificance in a universe of stupidity.

Have I made myself clear? If you have any questions I will make myself available.

Notyoueither: Nice try, but you obviously don't know anything about the CWB, and if you took the time to think before you write, you'd realize that you are wrong.

The CWB buys up grain during times of surplus bumper crops and pays above market prices. When the harvest is small and prices shoot up, the CWB sells off it supplies, while buying up crops at market prices (which are depressed by the CWB sell off).

The problem for farmers is not the CWB. It's the massive subsidies given to American and European farmers which allows inefficient farms to operate at lower costs and floods the market with grain.

I'm surprised a farm boy like you can't understand these basic economic facts.

But then again, western farmers are none to bright. They haven't made money for years, there is little hope of making money in the immediate future cause of the American and European subsidies, so what do these guys do: they keep on growing wheat and dig themselves further into debt.

That's an extremely simplifed explanation, and in its simplication it lost some of its accuracy.

True, but sometimes you have to keep it simple.

We all know the CWB isn't perfect and like anything it can be improved, but I'm tired of all these wheat farmers (and their descendents) blaming everyone else for their bad business decisions.

You have no idea of my diabolical plans, my dear, innocent lad.

And besides -- the United States attracted tons more immigrants in its history than Canada ever did. That makes us more virtuous -- so what if we put them on starvation wages in the 19th century and early 20th century??

You're late in your rotational spin.

Don't know anything about the CWB. Nice troll! I admit, you got me.

However...

Do you seriously think the CWB has the storage facilities to save even a fraction of the bounty of the prairies? Man, buy a clue! Alex is giving them away today.

The CWB never pays anything it does not itself get from selling the f*cking wheat you, you, you...

Well, I guess you'll be happy when Westerners turn the whole sh*taroo into strip mines to get at the minerals. After all, by your own fevored reasoning, they shouldn't be trying to feed people in the first place.

I retract my comments about you being the singularity of stupid. There are no possible physics to describe the level of stupid you have obtained.

You are transcendantly stupid. As such, I will have to leave your case to ecclesastical authorities for a determination.

Ahhh, I was waiting for people to start with that.

Let me clarify things first of all:
I don't think any race, or sex, or anything like that is superior for anything than another.

All I'm saying is certain people are more apt for modern urban living than others, and those people tend to become well off even if they're poor. Others are more apt for other things (maybe even manual labor?), and they're unfortunately in a position where they can't make it in today's society up very far. Others may be geniuses but they're never born with the drive and ambition that can get them out of a "poor rut". That's particularly unfortunate.

Now, I'm not saying inherited wealth doesn't matter. It sure as hell does. People who come from a wealthy background have a headstart, but that doesn't mean people who aren't as lucky can't finish the same race.

I believe it's entirely possible to move up the social class ladder in modern society, and I've seen this first hand, but it takes special people to do that. Not everyone can do it. It IS easier for a "not so special person" to hold onto wealth when they're born with it, but there's nothing we can do about that.

And I honestly don't believe all people are created equally in the sense of possible achievement. Of course, all human lives are extremely valuable and should be counted valuable as such, but when it comes to salaries and jobs, not everyone's created equal. Some people just aren't cut out for lots of the white-collar jobs.

Well this is getting quite boring. The troll has said nothing worthwhile in his previous post. Absolutely nothing. All he has done is thrown out insults that everyone will ignore. In fact the vast majority of your responses have been nothing but insults.

notyoueither: Ask youself this simple question: which argument is more informative and more likely to persuade: the one that is calmly stated or the one that consists almost entirely of insults?Which one will people ignore?

All you are doing is shooting yourself in the foot or you are simply trying to be a troll (and if that is that case you're doing a terrible job).

I'm not going to bother responding to someone who clearly has no interest in discussing this issue in an appropriate manner.

If you want, you can continue making repetitious obscenities and insults, although why you would bother is beyond me. I doubt anyone will care about your boring ravings.

Ummm ... you got it backwards - Upper Canada was the english part, Lower Canada was the french part.

Other than that, I'm not touching this mess with a ten foot keyboard.

...

...

D'oh - I can't help it.

1. Canada could use a US style senate - Asher is right, the liberals don't need Albertan votes and without a geographic senate to offset the power of the commons, Albertans will be an ignored minority. It's just a matter of counting to 151. Of the 301 seats in parliament, Canada gives 7 seats to Newfoundland, 4 to Prince Edward Island, 11 to Nova Scotia, 10 to New Brunswick, 75 to Quebec, 103 to Ontario, 14 to Manitoba, 14 to Saskatchewan, 26 to Alberta, 34 to British Columbia and one to each of the Yukon Territory, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. If you sweep Ontario, you only need to pick up 48 more seats, easy enough to do without getting one of Alberta's 26. The Liberals got 176 (or 173?) last election and didn't even bother with a real campaign in Alberta. That isn't right.

2. Albertans can't just up and leave and expect not to have to compensate the rest of the country for all the natural resources they want to take with them. What, do you guys think you made the oil or something? Remember, you're just Canadians who happen to live in Alberta. If you want to leave, leave, but don't think you get to take the dirt with you.

3. The CWB sucks. But European and US farm subsidies suck so much harsher that the CWB is a fart in a windstorm.

4. It's almost meaningless to ask who has a better health care system. There are just too many factors. A better question than whose is better, is whose would you rather have. In the US, 10% of the population has no coverage, 20% or so have fantastic coverage and the rest of the people have the exact same complaints about their HMO coverage (long waits, lack of access to cutting edge treatment, poor service) that people in Canada have. In Canada, everybody is in that middle group. Pick the system that lines up better with what you think is right. Maybe the mean level of health care in the US is better, maybe not. But is it worth abandoning the bottom 10% to allow for a system where the top 20% can get fantastic care? I don't think so, but I'll admit that it is a moral issue, as opposed to a pure facts based one.

...

Now that I've typed all this, I know I'm going to get my ass chewed off by someone for every thing I've said. But I can't help it. Being unable to stop arguing about this stuff is what makes you Canadian, I guess.

Hmm, by GDP? I think it fluctuates too much to be useful. Check out this link from Statcan: http://www.statcan.ca/english/Pgdb/...omic/econ15.htm

As you can see, Alberta is on the move, having passed BC in GDP in 2000, but they were recently behind BC (thank you NDP government). So recent numbers would be good for Alberta if senate seats were handed out this way. But Ontario would get 40% of the seats! Compared to the 33% they get in the commons, that would just make things worse for Alberta.

My. That's embarassing. Shows you what an Honours Degree in History (almost) is worth.

As a point of fact resources are the property of the provinces. Or so I've been led to believe. Now if you want to talk military bases, National Parks, federal buildings, etc... you have a point. At any rate, it is my great hope that the country can accomodate the needs and desires of everybody, including Quebec and Alberta. I might point out that people who consider *Frogs bad, Quebec go* to be a bigoted and ignorant sentiment should equally be on guard against predjudices and bigoted ignorance of the West.

The CWB would be fine. If it was not mandatory that farmers sell their wheat to it. It does serve some purposes. It is good for selling to some foreign markets such as China and Russia. It sucks when it tries to manage local distribution. It is intolerable when your land is best suited to wheat and you are forced by law to have only one, inefficient venue to sell your product.

The only way to do senate distribution would be a set number per province or region. That is the only way to ensure against the tyranny of the majority. Using GDP would only substitute majority of people for majority of money.

Alberta would get 14% of the seats if it went by GDP, rather than 5.7% we get now, though. That's a big difference.

NYE: You're right about the provinces owning the land - but that wasn't what I was getting at. My point is that individual Albertans don't own the land, it belongs to all Canadians. Albertans just happen to live there, just like we all could if we chose (though that would be a bit cramped). If Albertans decided they want to leave, I'm sure we could work something out, but it would be just like a division of assets on a divorce. Albertans would have to get compensated for their share of Ontario's uranium, for example, and the rest of us would have to get compensated for our share of Alberta's oil.

Of course, same goes for Quebec - despite their best efforts to convince everyone otherwise.
