Germany's health care is one of the best in the world, and it's two tier. Open your eyes and see how to properly implement a two tier system, look up how those grazy Germans did it.

Has the Provincial government increased how much it gives the university or have they discovered a way to shakedown rich alumni to such an extent that would make an American school blush?

Yes, but you're acting like the waits don't kill people. They do. People die waiting for things in Canada, it's a sad fact ignored by many.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if those fatality rates were exactly comparible to those in the US who don't get stuff done because they're not covered.

26M Americans aren't covered, and how many people live there? 270M or so? That's pretty good, actually.

Then why is it McGill has just started to pull out of a financial crunch it underwent in the early to mid 90s?

We just refurnished all of our buildings and put up 3 new ones. Our physics computer lab has the most machine power/user in north america. We're about to have the first dedicated micromachining shop in Canada...

But then, they pay twice as much per capita for 4 times the service. Efficient? maybe.

Do you honestly think that our dogmatic thinking on the subject of health care spending is giving us the best of all possible systems?

Dogma and best seldom meet.

Maybe it has to do with the ~4B(is that number right?) or so that the federal government "accidentally" gave you guys during the 1990s during transfer payment errors...

Uhhh. Sorry to burst your bubble, but....

A rail link with BC was a precondition of their joining Confederation. It was not built for the enjoyment of the beaver and moose and buffalo who were the main inhabitants of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta at the time. Another thing. The rail road was necessary for the Canadian government to assert sovereignty across the West in the face of American pressure.

People followed the rails. No rails, fewer or no people. In fact, Western Canada was largely settled in accord with plans in central Canada to create it's own colonies. Guess you didn't know that did you buck shot? Well guess what? We don't particularly care to be treated as colonists out here anymore! You think Quebec has reasons to grumble. Live a life on these Prairies and then tell me about it!

One last thing. Ever heard of the Crow Rate? Yeah, that's the one. The one where Western Canada was subsidised for shipping grain to Eastern Canada. Did you know the flip side? Western Canada paid jacked up rates to ship any finished goods to Eastern Canada. That and the fact that if you grow wheat on the prairies you must sell your crop to the Canada Wheat Board. Try to truck it across the border at your own expense and the government of Canada will prosecute you. Meanwhile, farmers in Ontario and everywhere else can sell their produce any G*d-damned place they want, free of the CWB. Chew on them apples.

Nothing you said disputes the fact that the Western provinces were the main beneficiaries of the CPR. As you said, people followed the rails. There would be no farms or cattle ranches on the prairies had it not been for rail. There would have been no development of natural resources without rail (well, maybe oil and gas).

But don't even start me on the wheat farmers. When they have a bumper crop they complain that they can't sell it for a high price, but when crop prices crash, they demand hand outs from Ottawa.

And who created the CWB. Western grain farmers. They wanted a system that would provide protection when things were bad and to even out flucuating prices.

But, as always, they blame the Easterners.

Didn't the Crow rate get phased out years ago? And the reason it was there was to pay for the additional rail lines that were built years ago. IIRC, the farmers were complaining that there were not enough rail lines and so they built additional lines with the agreement that a toll would be applied on freight going through the Rockies. It was a user-pay system. And then the farmers complain about having to pay the tolls. They just wanted a free lunch.

Typical Western whines.

It's kinda common sense.
Having half of the country generally inaccessable makes it as good as useless. For the good of the country, it was connected via railroads with federal funding.

You're nitpicking now, and when it comes down to it, your comparison is still way, way off. The NEP was all about stripping energy revenue from the west and giving it to everyone, while at the same time allowing others to keep their resource revenue. That's not right, and it's certainly nothing like the concept of the CPR.

People die on both sides for different reasons. The only thing is in the US you're more likely to get better treatment.

Pull your head out of your ass, people die in Canada due to waits, people die in the US due to lack of coverage. Neither system is perfect, but the US offers better treatment right now.

Again, this is sorta general observation/common sense type thing:

1) Most drugs are available in the US first, Canada gets them years later. Better drug availability.
2) Most good research hospitals are American, so more cutting edge treatment is there.
3) There is competition amongst providers, so they try to keep all equipment up to date and ready for use.

I've also had first hand experience in both countries with medical systems.

The Government of Canada was under a contractual obligation with BC to build it.

The people of Saskatchewan and Alberta have paid for those rails many, many times over. How long do we still need to be treated as colonies?

The CWB. You're on crack! The CWB was brought in in response to a catastrophic drought and a cataclysmic depression. How much longer do you want to enslave prairie farmers on the thoery that the two might coincide again? Yes, enslaved! They grow it, they have no choice as to where to sell it. Just exactly how many other Canadians live under such strictures? Hmmmm.

And let me tell you son, as a descendant of those prairie grain farmers. Not many of them liked it from the f*cking start! It was imposed to keep the economic exploitation of Western Canada by central Canada going. We would have done just fine without it Jack.

I don't believe you. You're just a spoiled rich kid who thinks 'cause he's born into a wealthy family he has the right to go to the head of the line. It's one thing to have pride in your personal success in life. It's quite another to look down on other people because of something your daddy did.

Oh, yay for generalizations!
I'm not spoiled. My dad was poor and he doesn't hand me things, he expects me to earn them just like everyone else. It builds character. I have a job, I buy my own stuff, I'd have to pay my way through university if I didn't get scholarships.

Don't patronize me, buddy.

I do believe if you've got the money, it's simply stupid to prevent you from spending that money to get services. There should be adequate services for everyone, but to be blunt, if you've got the money, and are forbidden to spend it on your own health, it's simply stupid. That's just how I see it, anyway.

Now come on, attack my character some more! I really enjoy that, especially since you don't know who you're talking to.

1) Wouldn't that have to do with getting regulatory approval for a drug? Also, the top drug companies are based in the US, so naturally the drugs come out there first. The link between this and the health care system seems tenuous.
2) But is this related to the health care system or to the fact that the US is the economic superpower, has more money to spend on research, and simply has more people so more medical reserachers.
3) true for the few elite hospitals, but for the majority that do not have the resources to compete, they may well be less likely to update equipment because of cost. The drive to keep down costs may result in lower quality care.

But this is all theory. Any studies showing that US health care is significantly better than Canadian health care.

I know there are studies that have shown the US system is extremely inefficient in terms of administration costs compared to Canada. that's recognized in the states, but American politicians are willing to pay the higher cost in order to keep their higher freedom of choice (a choice that is really only available to the rich).

I said the CWB was created to protect farmers when things were bad, and then you claim I'm completely wrong and then say it was created when things were bad.

If the farmers are doing so well, how come they've been demanding, and getting, handouts for the past 20 years. The CWB protects them in bad years, and in good years the farmers are screaming to get rid of it.

I'm not saying you're wrong. I honestly don't know which system provides better care, on average or in terms of the best overall. I just wanted to know if you had specific facts to back up your claims rather than just analogies.

You can measure the adminstrative costs objectively and in this area the Canadian system is better, although that doesn't say anything about the quality of care.

You can disagree, but to do that you should actually post with content rather than a troll.

There have been two tales in this thread about poor people becoming better off. Some people can't make that leap, and there are definitely reasons for that. The same reason not everyone's an olympian.

I understand how warm and fuzzy it can make you feel to think all humans are created equal, but the harsh reality is it's not true. That's why some people have billions of dollars and most people don't.

It's survival of the fittest.
