Dutch right-wing politician, and candidate prime-minister, Pim Fortuyn has just been shot.

details are very sketchy.

Fortuyn had just given an interview on the radio at the Mediapark in Hilversum. After he got in his car he was shot, 1 to 6 times. In total, there have been 6 to 10 shots fired. Fortuyn is wounded, but still alive.

The national elections are held next week.

it's still unsure who did it, and if it is a well organised political assasination. Without a doubt, this has to be the worst political killing in Holland in my lifetime.

Reporters call it an "American style shooting", that is totally alien in the Dutch political scene.

Aparantly, Fortuyn already feared for his life. He knew he had enemies.

There are indication the shooter may have had inside help, since security usually is pretty tight at the Mediapark, and everyone who comes in is thoroughly checked.

depends if his party, named after him, can find a suitable replacement to rally the people. If they can find someone like that, they'll probably win the elections (Pim being a martyr and all). The other possibility is that the party will disband.

Fortuyn has been shot 3 times. Once in the head, once in the chest, once in the neck. Either the shots were fired at close range, or the shooter was a pro.

Melkert (social democrat) and De Graaf (D 66) are partly responsible for the climate in which this horrible event has happened.

For fear of losing seats in the elections, they kept associating Fortuyn with racists like Le Pen, knowing that Fortuyn had nothing to do with this kind of ideology. Shame on them!

Political assassinations seem to be quite at home on the European continent, even given a cursory look at history. So, I don't really know where the claim that it is either alien to the European experience or "American style" comes into play.
