Sony trash-talks Microsoft, Nintendo Increase the size of your Attachments

http://msnbc-cnet.com.com/2100-1040-919313.html

It's a longish article so I'll let you click the link.

[rant]Sony's really getting on my nerves lately. They keep saying the console wars are over despite soaring Gamecube and Xbox sales and slowing PS2 sales. It seems they want to try to drill it into people's heads that all the other consoles are going to die off and Sony will be the only one left standing.

News of this comes 1 day after Microsoft announces it's spending $1B on Xbox Live and $2B on Xbox alone within the next five years.

It also comes 1 day after it was revealed that during the first five months of the PS2's life, it compares unfavourably with the Xbox. Xbox sold 1.8M consoles in the first five month in North America, PS2 sold 1.6M. The Xbox also sold 70% more software than the PS2 did in those first five months.

It sounds like Sony finally woke up and sounded the alarms internally that they're in trouble. They really think they can get away with charging people $40 extra to go online, and $80 to get the HD -- all of which are included in the Xbox (which is the same price as the PS2).

Yesterday it was confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 2 (you know, the game all the PS2 fanatics claim as the reason to buy the PS2) will be coming to the Xbox in a significantly updated version called MGS2: Substance.

And today it was confirmed that Rockstar has abandonded its nearly complete Xbox port of GTA3 (announced back in January 2001) as Sony threw an undisclosed pile of money at them to keep GTA3 exclusive to the PS2 until October 2004. [/rant]

Now that the hardware in the PS2 is two years old, lacks integral online components, how does Sony honestly think the console wars are over? As more time passes, the PS2 games look worse and worse compared to the cheaper Gamecube and same-priced Xbox.

The only advantage Sony had, game library, is slowly shrinking as well with over 200 Xbox games due out before the holiday season this year.

Sony's living in their own dreamworld, and I really hope it nips them hard in the ass.

Morrowind is comeing to the X-box as well. but of course I have a computer so it seem stilly buying an X-box.

But if I didn't have a computer I would get the X-box over PS2. It seems to have the best of both worlds.

Monolith: It's all but confirmed that the Xbox next-gen will be called Xbox2 and the PlayStation 3.

Nintendo will probably go for something really odd again.

On a sidenote, here's how I'd clump recent generations of consoles (leaving out some that I don't know much about):

SNES
Genesis

PlayStation
Nintendo 64

DreamCast
PlayStation 2

Gamecube
Xbox

I mean, as far as I'm concerned GC and Xbox blow the PS2 away when it comes to technology, which is how generations are marked.

Got spare money?

DC and PS2 are both sort of stuck in the middle as uncomfortably between-generation systems, PS2 closer to the next-gen GC and XBox, and DC closer to the N64. If I buy one of these, it'll probably be an GameCube; I'm not too fond of the idea of paying 300$CAN for a video game console...

Certainly not, but they are way too full of themselves.

I really hope for an equal environment for all three consoles. I want all to survive, but Sony's just being stupid and ripping people off.

They're overcharging for obsolete hardware, they charge for EVERYTHING extra (multi-tap, memory cards, hard drive, ethernet), and they're trashtalking everyone else and claiming to have won the console war just as it's starting.

I think that as years pass, more people will acquire the GC and/or Xbox if they already have a PS2. The benefits are clearly there, in terms of visuals and types of games available (see Blinx which isn't possible at all on the PS2).

On a hardware basis, the X-Box represents a stunning amount of value (I know, because I know how much the chips cost!). It will be difficult for Sony to get to that stage even in a next generation machine.

I think most of the Xbox success can be explained with the Xbox being more of a multimediastation than it's competitors. I wouldn't go out on a limb guessing that many people buy it mainly for the DVD, which is in par with those costing around $700.

The European sales figures are way lower than in NA, btw. Over here it's almost a fiasco.

Very few people in North America buy the consoles for being a DVD player. Last I heard the DVD playback kit for Xbox sold very poorly.

Most people buying game consoles tend to already have a DVD player. You can get them for like $90-$100 now.

Most of the Xbox's success comes from the launch title games like Halo and DOA3 that really enticed people.

And you know North Americans -- bigger is better. More power too...*tim taylor grunt*

Heh. You wait — in five years MS will have extended its monopoly beyond Windows and the Internet to the home gaming market. And I bet there will still be people defending that corporate monopoly (after all, uniformity is GREAT), no matter if it was the government pulling that crap, the very same people would be going apesh*t.

Yep, MS is the monpolist of today and tomorrow!

It will take alot more than the Xbox to squash Nintendo (who has already outlasted one competitor already).

Sony is more evil than MS, everyone knows that. I mean, Sony's part of RIAA and MPAA too.

I'd rather have a MS Monopoly over a Sony Monopoly. Microsoft makes crap piracy protection.

DinoDoc: Nintendo will always be around as I see it. I don't think it'd be too wise for them to try a new console after the GCN though. I think it'd be better for them (read: more profitable) and better for everyone as a whole if they went multiplatform like Sega.

Heh. I'd like to see Nintendo, Sony and MS with 33.3 percent of the market each, give or take a percentage point apiece to leave room for smaller companies and/or individuals. That would be a good marketplace arrangement ... too bad it likely won't come to fruition.

I just checked out an in-game movie off Blinx. Nice graphics. Nice sound. I just didn't feel the urge to play it.

IMO, only the Japanese and Brits (read: Rare) know how to make video games.

Blinx is still 7 months away from release, and from the IGN GameCube boards about 80% of the GCN people posting are whining about how they want it.

I don't honestly see how you can want to play Mario Sunshine but not Blinx. Sunshine is Mario 64 with a waterpack.

I swear, if the cat was Mario you'd go into orgasm right now.

But if you think only the Japanese and Brits can make good games, you definitely picked the right console.

I can't stand Pokemon and Mario games. So unoriginal, it's milking the Franchise like the Jason X movie.

I want originality over repetition.
Japanese developers are even more into the pop culture than American teenagers. It's sick.

Well, (as you may have guessed) Mario64 was my all-time favourite game. [nerd mode]Playing it was almost a religious experience for me. [/nerd mode]. I still have erotic dreams about it.

And hearing Sunshine is a sheer continuation of M64 is just great, IMO. Why change a winning concept?

I don't have a "thing" for Mario, really. He could be a transsexual cheerleader for all I care. It's the environments and moods that the games are all abouts. I just know that everything Miyamoto touches turns to gold. yup

Not really, according to Nintendo.

It's the same damn franchizes over and over and over.
Here's a run down of their press conference today:

  • Metroid Prime
  • Resident Evil 0
  • Eternal Darkness
  • Super Mario Sunshine
  • Wario World
  • Zelda
  • F-Zero
  • 1080 Snowboarding
  • Star Fox Adventures

Which one of those is not based on a franchise?

Star Fox hasn't been a platformer before, IIRC. It used to be a shooter with crappy vector graphics.

I think it's very hard to break through with new characters when it comes to platformers/cartoons. Just look at Donald Duck, been around forever. Most of the new attempts have been done before, and better.
