also... To the talk about everyones mother, for those who arent so bright, and I wont segrate you... hehe It was Sarcasim, because sean is a ***** when it comes to attacking people's personal Life. Sean stay out of it, seriously dude, one day it will catch up. There are some big big civ guys out there. Like gary for one man. Strategicking is like almost 7 feet. Could kill a bug with one little look. He is a monster i tell you. Huge bastard, great big strong arms. Scared me a little, its why i let him win the last few games. Ask Diety or Dank man, they'll tell you. Strategicking is a ruthless Sob.

Simply agree with the opponents about the game speed or set the time limit. Or don't play with slow people. It is easy.
For me the starting position is very interesting and in the SP I am prepared to think one hour about it. Seriously.
(And be sure I warned Eyes before our game.) |
I don't think that was a complaint, more of a question, what the F takes that long.
I refuse to set time limits, because there are legitimate reasons to exceed them. (a family crisis, a disconnect, or a 100 unit attack) BUT I make it a habit to NOT play with slow people. I like to give the person the benefit of the doubt and not rely on one game to determine it, (despite it being evident quickly)
I will usually nicely recommend that a player should speed up a bit, but if they don't take the hint, CYA.
If you want to take an hour to figure your first move, please stick to SP, I doubt you will find many repeat MP games.

Spike, Michigan is taking over the civ world, didnt you see this comming? We are a controlling sanctioned party, out to spread the stratigic minds of so many of our dear brethren to the world. Were going to become a cult. We already have the stragness for it... Hehe... Jk, but damn the capabilities behind our minds... *sighs* Michigan is the shi-t. But still wtf is Pbem? hehe....

I like time clocks too - it stops alot of the *****ing about time length - but I can see RAH's point to about special situations.
I think a real long time clock (30 mins) rather then nothing is the way to go. That way people can factually see how long thier turn is taking compared to others.

In SP I'm prepared to think about 10 secs on my start position. In MP it's about 5 secs.

I mean to be honest, ok if you want a game every year maybe.... Cool. But for the love of *****..... what on earth? my longest turn was like 15-30 minutes. Not no damn email. I must say i totally agree with sean. And Normally i would say what ever he stood against. But come on.... Play by mail? Sean is right here guys..... I hate to say it.

Problem is, you could end up playing for 6 months or so before you realise the game's going to be a walkover by one player.

You know, I am a beginner, I have played less than 10 games and usually didn't go over 0AD.
I took only one game very seriously, the Campo Challenge 1. In this game, I thought much more than one hour about the starting position, because I had to find also a system how to compare and evaluate different decisions.
See my posts 23-04-2002 19:15 and 25-04-2002 15:43 if you want to understand why I am so slow.
But I have got some experience thanks to that game: if I would start a game with a similar starting position (a river) now, I would think a couple of minutes only. (The non-river position would be complicated again - questions about building one or two cities, roads or no roads...)
But I am speaking about a game that I approach very seriously. I can play a "light" game faster. But the serious approach is more interesting for me now.

This is an aspect I never understood here: it seems most players play civ contentedly and don't care about exact rules and game mechanics.
Will you learn rules before you will play chess?
The explanation is probably that I look on the civ as on the chess, whereas most other players as on an adventure game.
