Who gives a **** about PBEM? (Time out:0 days after 23-05-2002, 23:52)
Not me.
Why is SlowThinker suddenly posting here?
Has there ever been support for PBEM on the MP forum?

Sean stay out of it, seriously dude, one day it will catch up. There are some big big civ guys out there. Like gary for one man. Strategicking is like almost 7 feet. Could kill a bug with one little look. He is a monster i tell you. Huge bastard, great big strong arms. Scared me a little, its why i let him win the last few games. Ask Diety or Dank man, they'll tell you. Strategicking is a ruthless Sob.

(And be sure I warned Eyes before our game.)

I don't think that was a complaint, more of a question, what the F takes that long.

I refuse to set time limits, because there are legitimate reasons to exceed them. (a family crisis, a disconnect, or a 100 unit attack) BUT I make it a habit to NOT play with slow people. I like to give the person the benefit of the doubt and not rely on one game to determine it, (despite it being evident quickly)
I will usually nicely recommend that a player should speed up a bit, but if they don't take the hint, CYA.

If you want to take an hour to figure your first move, please stick to SP, I doubt you will find many repeat MP games.

Tired of ads?

Spike, Michigan is taking over the civ world, didnt you see this comming? We are a controlling sanctioned party, out to spread the stratigic minds of so many of our dear brethren to the world. Were going to become a cult. We already have the stragness for it... Hehe... Jk, but damn the capabilities behind our minds... *sighs* Michigan is the shi-t. But still wtf is Pbem? hehe....

I like time clocks too - it stops alot of the *****ing about time length - but I can see RAH's point to about special situations.

I think a real long time clock (30 mins) rather then nothing is the way to go. That way people can factually see how long thier turn is taking compared to others.

Bud - for several of us the pressures of RL preclude any other form MP - rather take several months (years?) to play a good game with friends than never have any MP.

Problem is, you could end up playing for 6 months or so before you realise the game's going to be a walkover by one player.

Yup - but the two games I'm involved in at the moment have circumvented that - one is on a 'balanced' map the other is a scenario -- again, something is better than nothing -- I'm 54, loved this game for what 8 years? and don't intend giving it up just cos Morrowind is published in the UK on Friday - but it might slow me down a little

You can't be serious.
Not fully, but...
You know, I am a beginner, I have played less than 10 games and usually didn't go over 0AD.
I took only one game very seriously, the Campo Challenge 1. In this game, I thought much more than one hour about the starting position, because I had to find also a system how to compare and evaluate different decisions.
See my posts 23-04-2002 19:15 and 25-04-2002 15:43 if you want to understand why I am so slow.
But I have got some experience thanks to that game: if I would start a game with a similar starting position (a river) now, I would think a couple of minutes only. (The non-river position would be complicated again - questions about building one or two cities, roads or no roads...)

But I am speaking about a game that I approach very seriously. I can play a "light" game faster. But the serious approach is more interesting for me now.

Then by all means stick to PBEM games and not try a MP game. Your "serious" approach won't be very interesting for the people that have to wait an hour for your first turn

And I still don't understand what could possibly take an hour except for indecision...

Do what you like on SP.

I have to say I am somewhat confused that someone that has played as little civ as yourself is so focused on working out the exact minutiae of how the game works, and so involved with research both here and at CF. Care to enlighten us?

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

This is an aspect I never understood here: it seems most players play civ contentedly and don't care about exact rules and game mechanics.

Will you learn rules before you will play chess?

The explanation is probably that I look on the civ as on the chess, whereas most other players as on an adventure game.

HA HA HA HA HA HA... You're killing me. You are making a very BAD ASSUMPTION if you think that this is the case with most of us.
I was disecting the game machanics the day it came out. Many of us have contributed greatly to the overall understanding of the game and the rules that govern it. We have a very strong working knowledge of the game, how it works, and most importantly, how best to take advantage of those rules and quirks in a real game situation.

And the real key fact is, we don't need an hour to make a turn

I would like to play PBEM. I think it would be cool for big games. And there would be less complaints about slow play.

We tried it with the "big Aussie" five way but someone **cough** Hydey *cough, cough* couldn't be bothered sending on the saves and it quickly collapsed.

I'd go for it with the right players, but a scenario, not the base game, that would take to damn long (at least 250 turns=at MINIMUM one year or more).

If SG and Horsey would care to try a scenario PBEM, I'm game.

Sending the save isn't needed, just post it on the forum, all you have to do is check the thread.

Ming,

Take the corruption formula (Corruption and waste )as an example: the constants that affect the corruption level under different governments are very useful for strategic decisions. But it looks nobody missed them last 5 years.
I suppose most players gained some intuitive notion about the corruption level in different governments and they were contented.

Or take the low wants of condensed information. The facts collected in the Info: combat thread are very important. Do you want to say that each player had his own version of collected combat fact and held it back?
quote:
Many of us have contributed greatly to the overall understanding of the game and the rules that govern it.
Yes, I agree. But "many of us" is a "very small minority". I would suppose the present-day amount of knowledge should be revealed in first six months.
