	Svenska Flaggans Dag Put an end to popups!

Well, with all the recent Sweden bashing, I figured it was prudent to celebrate June 6'th, Swedens national holiday. Well, not exactly holiday, since people still work, but as close at it gets :-)

The celebtration here in LA will most likely be confined to a few games of Kubb and maybe a wee bit of Akvavit

I think the biggest reason why it isn't celebrated is because, like everything that's said in Swedish, sounds absolutely ridiculous. "Svännska Fläggganns Daaag" doesn't stir anything in your heart - it just sound prancing.

Yeah, Krop. We've all seen the mad efforts that Gudrun and her cohorts have expended to rid ourselves of this last vestige of medieval priviledge, haven't we? I bet Carl XVI is worrying each day...

Last time I check the Republican Club had less than a thousand paying members - that's about as many as SSU and Unga Örnar in Hjo. Impressive line-up there, really.

And I wouldn't hold my breath about Gudrun changing her tune about this issue either - after all the next to sit on the throne will be a woman. In Vänsterpariet terms, your animosity toward the royal house is probably an Patriarchic felony, you know

a) I don't include Gudrun amoungst the people with the ability of critical thinking. She just scored a fluke on that one.

b) the membership number of the republican club is hardly a decent indication about the number of republicans (although we are few). It's not like only party members vote in the elections...

(also note that I'm not a member or supporter of the left party, it has been going downhill since CH Hermansson anyhow).

a) So we agree on something. Still, you said commies didn't support the King, and I mostly think you're wrong about that. The overwhelming majority of the people who see themselves as commies in Sweden still belong to vp after all, and vp can't really be said to have the issue of a republic anywhere near the top of their agenda. Probably the scattered loonie sects to the left of vp do take issue with monarchy, but they are even more insignificant than the Republican Club.

b) Agree. Still, it is at least a decent indicator about how important people feel this issue is. The answer, of course, seem to be somewhat less important the settling the approved colour for sunshades in your local housing community.

I'm not sold on the King myself, btw. I'm into monarchy for a lot of pragmatic reasons - it's way cheaper than presidential elections every couple of years, the King sells, and you avoid that effect that's displayed here at Poly most every day - in republics people who didn't vote for the current head of state often hate them with a passion. Look at the Yanks fighting it out over Clinton and Bush.
