Paiktis:

In the 6th and 7th centuries, the Byzantines had essentially lost control of much of Greece to Slavic tribes. And then the Bulgarian empire stretched down to nearly Athens.

what did i say? I was just saying what a German had said. How could Slavs and Greeks be any worse fighters than anybody else? I mean basically, nationalities are all physically capable of the same things. A nationality that is constantly at war, however, or in preparation for war, will produce better soldiers. Russia has been in a state of war, civil war, and revolution since 1914... Russians have been excellent soldiers in history but I think the fact that Russia has never been all that internally good of a country (russians have starved and been malnutritioned), brings down the quality of the typical Russian soldier but Russia can always bring three soldiers for every soldier of another nation.

thanks

Byzantium was a multinational empire to begin with, as most of the empires were. Although it was predominatly Greek.

However, fylis (races) remained segregated.

The only exception to this were Greeks - Romans and even that is not fully certain..

Suffering from ads?

"The Greeks would flee from the Turks in their 19th century revolutions... Helleniphone Germans declared that Greeks had become slavs and inferiority in combat was expected. They were no longer spartans."

spartans had an interesting system of 'pairing up' soldiers... so you lived and fought with your pair to the end. they were good soldiers, but its a scary system and I doubt Greece kept it till nowadays.

I'm suprised that there aren't more than 1 vote for the Turks. They are certainly better fighters than the Greeks.

My Take:

I said the Germans. They seem pretty compotent.

marketing research criticisms:

-The poll has too many choices. I dind't read all...and most people won't.
-ideally you should have a factor that randomizes which choices are at the top. It is well known that people are more likely to pick the first answer in any survey.

(FYI: look at how much of the repsonses are for the first few choices...)

Paik's right. The greeks are fearsome warriors. That's why when faced with the might of the 19th century Ottoman Empire, they were able to move towards the completion of the Megale Plan.

And why, to this day, Western Anatolia is greek, despite the ferocious fight the Turks put up in ww1 against the might of the allies.

yeah I noticed that. That is a mitigating factor. But survey theory still tells you that more people are choosing those ones because of the combination of location and choice overload. (It's a very scientifically proven part of market research. The statistics supporting this effect are very clear.)

Tired of ads?

Not proven with same cross-section as at Poly.

People here who respond probably care more and know more than average, so effect might be lessened (less choosing for the sake of choosing).

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

It probably goes in the other way.

People at poly are surrouinded by polls (survey overload...a well known factor.) Also reading habits on the internet tend to be more skimming than in print...and obviously much more than on in-person or telephone surveys.

Well, Kitty my argument is for a first degree factor. Yours is more of a second degree factor. I'm pretty familiar with overwhelming support for the factor that i metntioned. Have you seen any studies done on yours? Just curious. It seems like you could study variation of the location choce facotr as a function of intelligence...

Well, I voted for the American's even tho I am one. my bad!

Hmmm, I'd probably go w/the Japanese because of filial piety and the warrior sense of honor they have.....although this sense of honor is deteriorating in their country now. (just a little mind you)

Honor is a BIG factor with me....so Nihongin's all the way!

My brother wrote a beat poem called the "song of negative words".

It started out with him whispering: "Anschluss, rape kit, anschluss, rape kit,..." into the mic for 30 seconds or so...
