Art Of War CIVIII style. Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

SunTzu's Art of War converted to CIVIII environment. For more details, click the links.

I. LAYING PLANS

1. Wage war early and often!--- Very important.

2. Build roads to your neighbors. The faster you can
get to enemy teritory the better.

3. When going to war, take into acount one's population.

4. Thus, you need: Luxuries, Strategic resources, Improvements, Government(type),
and Great Wonders if possible.

5. Luxuries makes your poeple happy and content.

6. Strategic Resources are vital in war. Secure them early!

7. City Improvements adds to the peoples' happiness and culture.

8. Choose the right government for warring purposses.

9. Great Wonders will give the city high culture
and adds to the effectiveness of some city improvements.

10. Know these and you'll be one step closer to victory.

11. Therefore, when assesing the military situation
take above(these) points into acount.

12. (1) Which side has the vital luxuries?
Cut the enemy from it when the chance arises
(2) Where are the enemies strategic resources? Units with
the highest movement must be sent to it immediately to cut it off.
(3) Improvements prevent your own city from flipping to the enemys' side
while improving your chances of the enemy city switching to you.
(4) Which Government suits the current situation?
Does the enemy have a higher form of government?(yes)
All the more reason to go for the luxuries.
(5) Does the enemy building a Great Wonder?(F7)
Do you have the Nescarry Wonder(s) to help for prolonged war?
(6) Which side has the bigger millitary and more advanced?
(7) Which side has the most allies? Get one even if you're the Supper power.
(8) How long do you want the war to be?

**Exploit War Weariness to your advantage.**

13. Consider these and you're one step higher on the victory lader.

14. The battlefield is dynamic and so should your battle plans.(probability anyone?)

20. Hold out baits to entice the enemy. Feign disorder,
and crush him[for stack army].(SunTzu)

21. If the enemy is stronger then all the more reason to get alies.

21.a) If inferior in unit tech then defend aggresively.
Collect the strongest attack unit and go for the luxuries and strategic resources.

22. Realize that AI CIV is never secure on all front(RR makes this useless)

23. Realize that the enemy will go for the weakest city you
have no matter how deep it is in your empire.(Weaken stack units this way)

23.a)If possible, prevent the enemy from bringing the war into your territory.

24. Calculate to beat the odds. How many units would it
take to concqer a city? this and that and so on...

25. stacks...Stacks...STACKS and go for your objectives!

II. WAGING WAR

1. When you engage in actual fighting, if victory
is long in coming, then your troops will grow thin and
you'll be voulnerable from other CIV.

2. Thus engage in battle and sue for peace once the objectives are met.

2.a) If you have collected the support of an ally,
then complete the twenty turns then sue for
peace.

2.b) Prolonged war is not in the best interest of warring sides
but only benifits those on the "sidelines".

3. Only cary on the war if you know the benifits out-weigh the results of peace.

4. Once engage in war, mobilize your empire. It's empiretive that you continue
to produce units during war and after the war.

5. (If possible) Isolate the enemy capital to prevent it from trading,
thus ensuring a short war.

6. Besiege a city if you know you will take it and be able defend it
from the on-coming support units.

7. Standing on the defensive indicates insufficient
strength; attacking, a superabundance of strength.(SunTzu)

7.a) If stronger, then wage war agressively and swiftly

8. Securing the empire means ellimenating the possibility of attack.

9. (1) Acquire Allies!
(2) Support a large millitary and properly divide them
to handle the many possible threats.
(3) Trade with your neighbors to keep them happy or at bay(don't be greedy!)

10. Do not "sneak attack" the enemy, declare war through
embassy to prevent the other CIV from changing their moods about you.

11. In war, then, let your great object be victory(by completing the objectives),
not lengthy campaigns.(SunTzu)

Nothing like leeching SunTzus' Art of war lines

Some of these will work great against the AI and some for MP.

Excellent job. This should be on the curriculum of Apolyton University.

Re keeping the bystanders happy, you may want to add (Nathan's?) tactic of bribing with gifts of gold, rather than spending big money on an alliance.

Too bad the real Sun Tzu never commented on Culture Flipping.

That's because Soren invented it.

Oh, Coracle, shut it.

Machiavelli:

"Alexander the Great, anxious to depart for Asia and to make sure of Thrace, took all the nobility and leading men of that province along with him and, allowing them pensions, left the common people to be governed by men of their own condition; thus, the nobility were content with their appointments and the common people had no leaders to oppress or incite them to rebellion - the whole province remained quiet."

Do me a favor... you are among the top players and thinkers... help us get better and FIX it.

I dont know about that...

War by Strategem(SunTzu)

"Therefore the skillful leader subdues the enemy's
troops without any fighting; he captures their cities
without laying siege to them; he overthrows their kingdom
without lengthy operations in the field."

"With his forces intact he will dispute the mastery
of the Empire, and thus, without losing a man, his triumph
will be complete. This is the method of attacking by stratagem."

This is culture victory in way, but you have to survive long enough to het there.

Thanks arrian for the link.

I think good old SunTsu was referring to espionage and other nasty tricks in those lines. He wouldn't play civ III without demanding more effective spy possibilities.

(The book is short enough to read the whole thing while the computer takes its turn on a huge map game.)

LOL, obviously there's no culture flip in the Real world It aplies to CIV III though, somewhat.

If spies in CIVIII were like in CIVII then were in business.
