IW : Mozambique gone independent in 1975, from Portugal, by Frelimu,
a typical leftist independence movement. (There were a civil war against Portugal / SA forces from 1965 IIRC).
The new flag was Frelimus movement flag, where there is a tricolor to represent "freedom",
consisting of Green ("the riches of the natural earth; jungle", sad excuse for the
fact that Mosambique has no infastructure, IMO), Black (Africa, which should got independent
out of it's european rulers [1960's there wasn't much of Independent african countries]),
and yellow the mineral resources (again, sad excuse for the fact that they have no other riches.
There's an red part, also, which is pretty typical in countries
which still have the same political
leaders as in their independence war. The star is to represent socialism.
The book and white parts were added to the flag in 90's, IIRC, to
tell the outer
world that Mosambique is a peaceful land. I could also tell you the history of the
AK-47 and the black farming equipment, but alas, my engrish isn't capable enough for that.

USSR:n sirppi ja vasara tyyliin tuli vastineena 1970- ja 80-lukujen afrikassa
(joka oli täynnä vallankaappauksilla ja sisällissodilla muodostuneita uusia kommunistivaltioita)
"kuokka ja hakku" -teema. Tätä käyttivät monet uudet (afrikk.) valtiot lipuissaan
ja vaakunoissaan osoittaakseen solidaarisuutta Neuvostoliitolle (Kongo, Burundi, Angola tms.)
Mosambik käytti hakun sijasta AK-47 havainnollistaakseen NL:n keskeisen tuen maan itsenäisyydessä.
Maassa alkui käytännössä heti sisällissota, joka huipentui vuosina 1988-1991.
1992 maassa solmittiin rauha, kun Frelimu lupasi järjestää vapaat vaalit ja länsimaistyylinen
oppositio lupasi luopua aseistaan ja lopettaa kapinallistoiminnan.
Frelimu voitti sekä parlamenttivaalit sekä pressanvaalit,
ja vaikka oppositio syyttääkin sosialisteja vaalivilpistä, merkittävää kapinointia ei ole syntynyt.
