c'mon, this is the man who thinks that he is the "father of Islam" and should be the rightful ruler of the entire arab world.
Fortunately for us, not all madmen reside in the Middle East, who supplies the majority of the oil for the US, indeed, the entire west. I'd hate to deal with gas prices once Saddam starts bombing his arab "brethren"

Too true. and one of the things we hand him is a prolonged stay in office. It's time for him to go. I say Ma'asalaama, and good riddance.

I don't think he was telling anyone not to post. He was just saying that discussions would be more interesting and would explore more topics if we spent less time replying to bad arguments. He's right, I just can't stop myself.

I was lamenting the fact that people aren't ignoring certain other posters, thereby taking up pages and pages of posts with responses to things like "Yarr Europe is full of commies," i.e. comments that are so asinine that they clearly don't even need a response.

Look at history. THe oil crisis in the 70's I believe? A lot more than 25cents to the gallon jump. And it's not just private automobiles that run on gas... what about every military vehicle we have? Besides, aside from the economic issue...
... It is very likely that many of the chemical weapons saddam has are COULD reach our troops... stationed in kuwait. He still has his eye on it, my friend.

Why? Because there's oil in his country? He's not going to stop selling it. That would be like a store owner turning away every other customer because he was ugly. He can go ahead and limit his supply if he wants to, but in case you're not aware, he only controls one country and has very little influence with the leaders of the other countries.

Orange, I am Spanish and I identify greatly with my people... I like it so much in my country I am going to try and get a transfer from whatever University I am going to in California to the University in Salamanca.

It is not my fault I live in a different country. Don't attack my patriotism to my country because of that. And certainly do not attack my character based on that.

So tandee, the US can allow Saddam to continue attacking his people with nerve gas and stuff?

I wanna qualify all this by saying.... I'm an arabic linguist, if there is war, I'm going to Iraq. I don't wanna go. I REALLY don't. But not only is Saddam dangerous, he is unjust. He has already proven a willingness to use nerve agents on people-- when he murdered hundreds of kurds to the north with them.

Hmm... attacking Saddam just because he can endanger our oil supply is a little too close to the Japanese Empire's reason for attacking Pearl Harbor (we were blockading their scrap metal, oil, and rubber supplies).

Appropos of nothing: today is Pakistani Heritage Day at Shea Stadium in NY.

they shouldn't? That's smart. Take the troops away. Because whether or not Saddam has much power with his own oil-- if he could cut Kuwait's supply off? And gain a significant control of trade routes in the persian gulf? Um, no thanks.

The US does what it does because it suits US interests.

a) It's naive on the part of the rest of the world to expect anything else.

b)And, it's naive on the part of the US to expect the rest of the world not to realize (a)

Oh - why can't Iraq (and anybody else) sell their oil at whatever price they choose, or that the market will bear? Isn't that the American way?

Chemical weapons and terrorists are bad, yes, but the US has supported lots of terrorist regimes in the past, and probably showed Iraq how to make chemical weapons, anyway (back when they were fighting Iran).

Cut the crap Fez. You're Spanish, we get it. But you haven't lived there in quite sometime, and you certainly don't have any political or social pull there.

These are what I'm referring to...

quote:
I assure people here, my country Spain will stand by the US and will not fall down the same ignorant path of some Europeans who are only paving the way for future terrorist attacks.

Kepler, I assure you my people are not whining about what the US does, we are behind them every step of the way. And the same with Italy.

You can't 'assure' anyone anything about the Spanish citizens or government as you are in contact with very few (if any) of them!

quote:
It is not my fault I live in a different country. Don't attack my patriotism to my country because of that. And certainly do not attack my character based on that.

No one's attacking your patriotism. I'm attacking your supposed 'knowledge' of the people and government of a country you don't even live with and can barely identify with.

Of course we do--- and which arabs would be unhappy about losing saddam on their border? Hmmmm... none? Sure, they'll make dissatisfied noises to show their "arab unity" but they know he's a loon as much as we do. Saudi Arabia wouldn't have let us in the middle east unless we were needed there. Do you think we've suddenly stopped being important to Saudi security?

It's also the american way to ensure that needed markets maintain a certain reasonability for our own good-- and Europe's, I might add.

Oh, and yes, we supported Iraq against Iran. All the more reason to chuck Saddam out... we gave him that ability, he is using it to commit atrocities, not only is it necessary logically, but morally.
