Yes, it's still going. In fact, a thread has just been started in one of our private forums about version 20 of the Alpha.
It's been a while since version 19, but this is really a big step forward.

There's still some work to do on the graphics engine and the AI, but generally speaking things are going well.

Sorry, we've only budgeted for one Belgian spammer to have inside knowledge of the game.
DeepO got there first, I'm afraid.

A breakdown of where we stand with v0.2 will be made when it is in the hands of this tester. I'm not exactly sure of what has changed so far, because it's not finished yet, but it promises to be the biggest step forward we've had for while.

I don't suppose I could interpret this to mean that you may still be looking for non-Belgians by any chance?
Kiwi spammer-insiders perhaps?

Its all sounding rather promising in any case.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Alrighty then, here's a brief little update.

Version 20 of the alpha is still in the hands of the coding team. A temporary graphics engine is currently in production for this latest version and test shots of it are looking promising.
When this build is released (I don't know what the ETA is) we'll have taken a huge step forward to the Beta.

It might also interest some of you to know that this weeked marks the 1 year anniversary of the Candle'Bre project. The team are having a couple of chat sessions on friday and saturday and much fun and games is planned!

Sweet - thanks for that FP.

Care to throw any more tidbits to the masses?
Are we looking at top-down graphics or isometric? Has Vel busted any monitors in a fit of frustration with Bryce?

cheers,

Rich.

Vel's lovely graphics are not really being very cooperative in his attempt to work them into an isometric view. The primary problem is in getting the tiles to blend together at the edges realistically. Not only is this boring and time-consuming, but it is also very difficult for somebody who isn't a natural artist.
When even stubborn old Vel throws his hands up in despair at something you know it must have been pretty unpleasant.

If any graphics genius' with a lot of time on their hands are reading this then help would be appreciated.

The temporary replacement is also isometric, which is nice, and is certainly a huge improvement over the current look of the game. Although it won't exactly stretch your fancy GeForce4 graphics card it is nevertheless very nice to see something coming together in more than 2 dimensions.

Well, this was probably the most productive weekend we've had for a while.

Thanks to the hard work and ingenuity of DeepKimchii and Vel significant strides have been made towards a working graphics engine.
* FrustratedPoet gives them both a round of applause
Testing and experimentation are still continuing - more news as it occurs.

Our two weekend chat sessions in celebration of our 1st birthday were a great deal of fun, everyone had a good time and there was much eating of snackages!

Small, but regular improvements to the graphics engine are continuing.

I don't think it'll compete with Doom 3 , but we believe it should compare very favourably* with similar amateur Civ projects such as FreeCiv and Clash.

Indeed you did.

I'm not quite sure if you're kidding but, in case you are, thats not actually a half bad idea. Rather than implementing a full sci-fi mod you could put in a level or "mode" perhaps whereby once a certain trigger is activated (In Candy terms - "Once the eversealed cave is, erm, unsealed, and the Nilrog seer comes forth" ) all (or maybe not all ) players armies become heinously powerful with everything from plasma grenades and particle beams to catapults turning into Mk V continental siege machines (see the "Paranoia" rpg regarding "laundromat security" ) and procede to turn Candle'bre into a pyre. Basically trash the whole place.
Include enough flashy graphics and stuff, "accidentally" throw in a screenshot with an obscure reference to this "secret level" (then spend the next six months until release refuting this but with a lot of smileys ) and it could serve to entice a crowd who otherwise mightn't give it a thought...

Information hot off the presses:

A quote from early today on our team forum:
quote:
[The latest build of the graphics engine] shows a number of improvements: a grid superimposed over the terrain tiles, the loading and display of a bitmap (actually the SMAC console), a specific font (12pt Lucida Console) with a transparent background over the console bitmap, and a border around the main scrolling area, with colored bitmaps.

The SMAC console we got from the game files is only a placeholder until our own graphics for it are finished - we just needed a similar UI feature to plug into the engine.

All of this is in addition to the isometric map, terrain tiles, army graphic and building graphics that we've already got in place.

The post this quote is taken from included a screenshot, but since parts of it are placeholders or borrowed from SMAC we can't show it yet. The time for a public unveiling of the in-game map is approaching more quickly than we could have imagined, however.

Shhhh! Now Stoo! Don't you go spreadin' that false hope around! We're doomed to fail, 'member?

-=Vel=-

(our alpha graphics set is really coming together nicely, I must say....for this stage of development, it has exceeded my expectations so far, but WHEN the screen shot is released--and it won't be long--please bear in mind that this is the starting point, not where we'll end up. I'm happy with these graphics as alpha graphics. In the end, as we all learn more about makin' 'em, they will naturally evolve).

Updates of note:

* Cyclo has begun work on the graphics to represent our spells. We have our first animated spell graphics!

* Hand-in-hand with that, I purchased a sound effect to accompany the animation, so when cast, the spell will have both a "look" and a "sound" with it....only 129 spells to go...LOL

* Posted an updated "pre-screenie" showing the state of development on the main map display

* Purchased production rights to Candle'Bre's title sound track, and a couple other odds and ends. Currently searching for battle music....

-=Vel=-

PS: Sorry, you'll have to wait till we release the beta to hear CB's music!

Welcome back, Big Rich! We've missed you over at the testing forums!

I predict that there will be a flurry of activity here in coming weeks....based on the level of (rather wonderfully frenzied, actually) activity in our virtual design studio. For two weeks now, not a day has gone by where there hasn't been one, and most often several new screenies of progress posted, so we're getting closer! (heck, after I went to bed last night, there were two more posted!)

Watch this space....
