Hmmm....that's a tougher question to answer than I thought, because the answer depends on the goal.

What % of the work is completed in terms of us having a perfectly completed game? Unknown.

In fact, I view the game and the game world as a living thing....odds are that it'll never be complete, in that regard (we'll continue to offer upgrades and improvements).

% completion in terms of the launch of the beta? I'd put that at 80% or better.

% completion in terms of the launch of the commercial version? Best guess....50%.

Hiya GP,

Keep an eye on the 'Road to Wyndamere' thread, to be upgraded to include version 0.19 info as soon as I can. Hopefully it will let people know how far the game is progressing in terms of implemented features, rule systems and stuff. I intended it to provide a more 'player-centric' view of progress than this thread alone could provide.

As of version 0.18 Candle'Bre is a playable game, you can research techs, build stuff (buildings available dependent on tech acquired), raise armies and go a conquering. The Fate system is partially implemented but not all of the 'cards' are coded. And there is a fledgling AI to play against.

As for percentage of work completed, I can't really comment. A lot of stuff has been done but I don't really have a handle on how hard the programming is for the rest.

Hope this helps

Rich.

Another news item, made official just today!

BigRich....our first guinea....erm...no, make that Beta Tester!, has officially been added to the CB Roster! Welcome aboard, and good luck with the PR work!

-=Vel=-

PS: This is also a good time to generally announce that we are looking for anybody with even a smidgeon of artistic skill who has time on their hands and is interested in contributing to the project. If you can do anything at all relating to graphics, Candle'Bre needs YOU!

-V.

PPS: And we still need to strengthen our Australian contingent, btw....

It's been a while since the last progress report but rest assured things are moving along briskly! The latest word from the coding team is:

"Latest Alpha build news.

Over the past few days, I have been double-checking the spell code, to make sure that I have something in place for each of the spells. I'm not saying that all of the spell stuff is fully coded, but there is "a place for every spell, and every spell in its place".

For the time being, I am leaving out the option that appears in some of the spells to allow the target faction of the spell to buy their way out of the spell effects.

Since combat is such an important part of the game, and assuming that the canned strategy stuff on the forum is current, I'm going to finish up the new version of the test battle simulator, including leaders, leader specials, units, and strategies.

Since we're not "code complete" yet, there probably will still be at least one more alpha, using the current interface. On a parallel track, though, I will soon need to begin transitioning my data classes and functionality over to use the new graphical interface. "

So there you have it - spells, graphics and version 0.2 of the combat engine. Maybe this explains the wait

Yeah yeah....in my excitement, I put the latest alpha build news in the wrong thread....so shoot me....

Anyway, BigRich and I will do some system checks and stuff to make sure that it's all hanging together the way it ought to.

With the graphics and this much of everything in place, I don't suspect we'll be able to go a whole lot further without some....shall we say, "additional help." ? Our main job at this point is to make sure it's engaging, complete enough to play from start to finish and not be dull and boring, and to make sure it doesn't crash spectacularly.

After that, we're turning it loose to grow in the wild....

A note about the terrains: Those are ~3 generations old, and are place holders till DK can switch them out with Busta's new terrains!

EDIT: Also, the minimap has not been enabled for this build (tho there is space for it on the display--that would be the largish black rectangle at the bottom, nearer the right hand side), and you'll note that this build uses the tiled map again. We're still keen on the provincial map, and workin' on the best way to use it.

I believe DK's words were (before we actually had something graphical to display) "if we show this right now, it could set the gaming world back five years!"

Good timing on the showing of that old pic.....makes a nice contrast!

Suffering from ads?

Sadly yes, though we're still trying to sort out what it means.

We're faced with....a vexing problem.

In the midst of our bug-hunting (searching for the cause behind a couple of game-crashing buggaroos), one of our most active coders has....vanished.

Now, vanishments are common enough on a volunteer project, and we've had several members take extended vacations away from the world of Candle'Bre since we've begun this journey.

This one, however.... I don't know....it's to the point where I'm questioning if he will be returning to us or not.

There were no flames, no arguments....nothing of the sort, but the fact remains that an extremely productive member of the team has gone silent, and remains unresponsive to our attempts to reach him.

And if you don't think that THIS was a tough post to make....sheesh!

It's a setback. A pretty freakin' HUGE setback, there is no doubt.

But, it's also the first serious snag we've hit since the project began.

So....forgive the silence of late...those of us who remain are still jazzed, still determined, we're.....just having to do a bit of scrambling now.

One way or the other though, Candle'Bre will be.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

It almost goes without saying but if anyone out there wants to help out with the coding, they would be *extremely* welcome. By far the most developed version of the game is written in C++ I believe, but work is in progress on designing a Java version as we speak

So if anyone fancies taking up the reins in C++, thinks they can contribute to the Java project, or knows somebody that could do either, then we would love to hear from you!

Rich.

Nope...it had just gotten back-burnered when one of our members presented us with a prototype in C++ that was pretty far along in its development.

So...now we're putting an APB out for another C++ guy and kicking back into high gear on the Java project too, which is where our existing expertise is more centered.
