I've played most of those games, but Monopoly, Chess, and Scrabble are the only ones I play very often. I used to play for the chess team in junior high and high school, but eventually got sick of it--all the haters on the team started reading 2,000 page books on the game and memorizing these complex openings, and I was all like "What the ****, this isn't fun."

Roman Empire split among various generals, have to fight for the Imperial title. It was actually the first one after A&A, I believe.

I did pretty good with Japan if I built factories in a lot of the east asian provinces and cranked out a bunch of tanks to steam roll Russia with. But the Allies do tend to almost always have an advantage, but realistically so, IMO.

The problem is getting Allied players who don't make mistakes

Germany can take out the USSR - easily - and still lose the game, if the UK and USA players know what they're doing. I've never seen the USSR make it to the end of the game, no matter which side eventually won. Of course, I always tend to play Germany, and always go for the throat of Russia right away...

yes but even I make mistakes as Allies and I still win. The Allies can afford to make a few mistakes. The Axis can't afford any mistakes.

Well, I fear it's not really classical but by far my favourite board game is 1835 (the German version of 1829 (British) or 1830 (American)), a railway-company management game.

I like Risk (one of the best game designs ever IMO), Monopoly, Scrabble, Backgammon and Diplomacy. My favorite 7 letter play in scrabble was "Arquebus" (which is 8 letter, but one of those was already on the board). Amusingly it got my opponent to challenge, which gave me another turn to exploit the open S.

I am pretty damn good at both Risk and Monopoly as well. Too bad I don't find many people interested in playing these games these days.

Aha! Yes, ASL is God's gift to the grognards. I could go on and on and on... but I won't.

Jon Miller plays by some automated system that makes PBEM or some such possible. I've never had a chance to look it up.

You should have joined the U.S. Army and attended DLI in Monterey. When I was there we played Third Reich at least a dozen times, with 4+ players. A great game, and a lot of fun playing with a full table of intelligent and crafty foes. I liked to play Britain or Italy best, because those were the two countries that started the game early and were the most balanced Land / Sea / Air powers.

Diplomacy is a game played on a map of Europe and the Med circa 1900, which is broken down into regions for the purposes of movement and combat. It's rules are fairly simple, but like most good games the situations in the game end up being complex. It is grand strategic in scale, with each player playing one of 7 great powers. There are only 2 unit types, armies and fleets. These move simultaneously directed by written orders of the players. Axis and Allies is a slightly more complex game of WWII. Like WWII it is very difficult for the Axis to win. Players can play Germano-Italy, Japan, Britain, Soviet Union, and United States. No, but I don't play nearly as much now as I did in college.

They key for me is to never play the same people twice, because once I wipe the board with them the first time, I know they'll just gang up on me the next game.
