Dude! How many times you get attacked!?! I've never bee attacked by anyone with whom I wasn't going to school. All my years of living in the worst parts of Chicago, I never once was attacked. And I was a pretty milk-toast looking white boy. After years of dood eating and waste length hair and a scruffy face, I now look like a biker ('cept fot the clothes I wear). The only tim I got into trouble was when I was really stupid (followed someone down an ally for a drug buy ), and I still wasn't attacked. |
I am including my childhood here, so these weren't all armed gang members etc. I lived in Japan (Okinawa to be exact) for 6 years when I was a kid in the sixties. It was fairly common to be accosted by Okinawan village kids as you made your way through their village. They were fairly honorable about the whole thing, they didn't gang up on you if you were alone, but you did have to fight their "champion", who was often several years older than I was. When you surrendered they let you go, no continued beating or humiliation.
Things were a lot worse in the states. In the South (where we went first) there was a similar warrior code, though not as ironclad. When we moved to the north (Lansing Mi) though there was a lot of ganging up and group beating. I only really got severely beaten once, but it was by 6 white trash punks who were all 3 years older than I was.
After I got out of the Army I returned to college and worked downtown as a security guard. I had to walk through some really bad areas at midnight to get to work. This was in the mid 80s and the crack epidemic locally was at it's height. I was accosted by a black man with a knife (I pretended to pull a gun on him and he ran), an Hispanic man with a knife (I refused to get close enough to him for him to jump me, and used a couple of quart bottles of Coca-Cola to enter into a stand-off until he wisely decided to withdraw). There are numerous other examples, most of which I escaped from without a scratch, often by running and stringing out the pursuit and then ambushing the fastest pursuer.
Consider that I have never owned a car and have often walked alone to get where I wanted to go. I'm fairly small (5'6") and not prone to getting scared or anything. I look people in the eye if they are looking at me. I think people generally thought I'd be an easy mark, but my years on Okinawa actually turned me into somewhat of a bada$s. We moved a lot, and I used to always beat up the school bully in the first few weeks I was in the new school. You make a lot of friends that way, and I was often the king of the geeks at school.

Read the thread. Several people have mentioned examples of these privileges, and several people have challenged whether these privileges exist.

Then why not comment specifically on the examples already stated.
