Why exactly are gay marriages not recognized in the U.S. ? Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I've always wondered what exactly are the objections to two men or two women getting married in the US. Espiecilly since the New York Time's decision to include gay marriages (or life long commitements) has caused all sorts of news.

I've always been of the belief that you could marry anything that is a semi-intelligent adult and your not attached to someone else.

One state, Vermont, officially recognizes gay marriage. However, thanks to a law passed by congress called the Defense of Marriage Act, other states aren't obligated to recognize gay marriages performed in other states. The tax laws and rights that are given to married couples by the Federal Government also do not apply to the Vermont gay couples, as the Federal Government doesn't recognize them.

Many municipal, county and state governments will give partner benefits to gay couples when a member of the couple is an employee of the government. San Francisco also requires companies it contracts with to have gay partner benefits, I believe.

Redfern, that is true. I have to find articles on a paramilitary group called the "AAA" in Latin America... what they do to gays, or anybody who opposes them for that matter.

Edit:

quote:
Originally an army-linked paramilitary organization thought to have conducted much of the dirty war of the 1970s, the Alliance was reported to have been revived after police raids on several residences in May 1985 yielded firearms, explosives and three arrests. The group has since been linked to a number of terrorist acts, including several kidnappings and the destruction of the facilities of the moderate Radio Belgrano station. Its alleged founder Jose Lopez Rega surrendered to US authorities at Miami in March 1986 and was extradited to Argentina in July to face a variety of charges, including fraud and murder.

Leader: Anibal Gjordon (in prison).

Their leader is in prison but attacks are on the rise again.

No states recognize gay marriage, not even Vermont. Vermont has something seperate for gays, called a civil union. It's kinda like marriage.

The Defense of Marriage Act violates the Constitution's Full Faith and Credit clause. It's unconstitutional. If one state ever legalizes gay marriage, all states will have to recognize the marriage, at least until the Constitution is changed.

Because in any contest between tolerant and intolerant people, the tolerant compromise. That's why Creationists, anti-abortionists, gay-bashers, racists, and other far right loons aren't laughed off the planet -- it's too much of a pain in the butt to deal with them.

It's probably better to be an atheist, pro-abortionist, Christian bashing bigoted left wing looney. Then you can pretend that you know everything and judge the rest of the planet.

Tolerance depends more on the individual than on the belief system being used. I've met a fair number of intolerant atheists and intolerant theists, as well as a fair number of tolerant atheists and tolerant theists.

I didn't include online personas in that tally, since a lot of people who are ignorant trolls online are probably much better behaved in real life (since they'd get their teeth knocked out in real life if they acted the way they do online).

My question really hasn't been answered. Why does AMerica not allow the same benefits to monogomous homosexual relationships that are afforded their heterosexual counterparts. The fact that its interpreted as a sin in the Bible is not a valid answer.

And if there isn't a valid reason why this unfairness continues why has it continued so long in this modern age? I know plenty about how wrong the word niggardly but two gay men are essentially discriminated agaisnt by the governement because of their sexual orientation.

You may not consider it a valid answer, but it is the reason why.

I don't believe its a valid answer because it seems to be a knee jerk answer. It was my original answer and I believe it is going to be most of the European's and liberal's but I'm hoping there is a better reason why it is taking so long for gay rights to be recognized.

The answer is simple: The US is a Christian nation. Most Christians do not support the notion of gay marriages, at least not to the point where a politician will likely stay in office legalizing them.

There's nothing more to discuss.

AFAIK, only one country recognizes gay marriages, the Netherlands.

The reason no other country (that I know of) recognizes gay marriages is because of religion, pure and simple.

Keep hoping, but there isn't. Look at what Asher said - that's pretty much the sum of it. I don't think it's right, but it's a pretty cut and dry issue.

The line has to be drawn somewhere. Why can't a brother and sister be officially married? Why can't a man have 3 or 4 wives or husbands(?), or why can't a person marry a dog (if they are truely in love)?
