In that resume, might want to take out the politics (ie, a lot of your activities and the activism thing). It will hurt you.

It is also why I plan on not putting my Presidency of the College Republicans at Rutgers on mine. You don't want things that will alienate people.

Right, depends on the job of course.
But things look pretty thin without the politics

quote:

About the same as any other history major
the upside is I really don't mind working for starvation wages if I get a half-way interesting job.

Enter the AD-FREE zone

Lose the "Objective:" line. When I read resumes I always ignore that kind of stuff. It is just generic BS and does not help distinguish you from any other candidate. Instead, use a concise sentence or two (or three) in your cover letter indicating why you would be good for the specific job you are applying for.

edit:
I would leave the politics in unless you are applying for an organization you know to be conservative. It indicates you have some people and organizing skills, and shows you have done something more than have your nose in a textbook for the last four years.

- Summary too long. It's a summary.
- Move the activities up with your education. Did you receive any honours due to activities etc.? If so, put that in.
- Do you hold any offices in student bodies?
- Did you make any major contributions to the student bodies?

"Extensive experience in cutting a wide variety of food products into rather small pieces"

Okay, what else did you do? I am assuming you don't want to be a chef? What kind of transferable skills did you acquire at this job?

"Clerical work including document editing, phone answering, filing, photocopying, library reorganization and the like"

Document editing is good. Elaborate on the kind of documents you have worked on. Were your edits final? Did somebody else looked at your stuff? How good are you at organising the libraries?

"Clerical work including filing, assistance in search for a East Asian Economics professor, filing, photocopying and the like"

What did you do for the searches? Were you part of some research project?

"Clerical work including filing, tutoring of disabled professor emeritus in computer use, research assistance for professor studying the institution of the Apartied in South Africa, photocopying and the like"

The tutoring part is good. Make that stand out. Something along the lines of you have the personal skills to deal with disabled old folk and you have experience in tutoring. Also you are pretty good at basic computer operations.

What you want to do is to highlight your acheivements and skills. So cut out the photocopying stuff. Did you learn new skills at work? If you did, put that in.

As far as libraries go I know how to make card catalogues and put things in alphabetical order

You're too late, I have a job

It's only a bit of temping but it pays the bills. At least it doesn't mean I have to apply to any job that is there, I can be a little more selective (I mean, a lot of those positions were for worse money than I am on now) and they are keen on keeping me for as long as is possible (although I will see about that if I get a better offer).
