I see the Forum's resident Manx fan (who has the double misfortune to be a soccer fan resident in Wales) felt the need to drop by and leave his job description?

Excellent news, Geordan Murphy (the Irish speedster) is fit and being given a run at fullback tomorrow (he normally plays wing).

The lads speed and intelligence adds a real extra edge to our back line.

Cause for Havak to celebrate.



By the way Caligastia we know we probably have to beat NZ at some point but I would muhc rather it be in the final.

And Finbar - I asked my associates about the L***** lad we signed, Gareth Raynor, and he is actually injured. They reckon he has great potential as he is quick and also, suprisingly, intelligent too.

Speaking of mental pygmies, though, Wendell Sailor did something to his knee during training the other day. A race against time to be fit for the tour. Frankly, I hope he doesn't make the tour, takes his athleticism back to that other game, and lets someone else who can actually do more than run at high speed and break tackles make the tour.

PS. I notice Graeme Bond is debuting for Sale against Glasgow this weekend. I look forward with great interest to seeing how he goes.

The RWC will be very interesting as either England, SA or NZ will not make it past the pool playoff stage. I think it will probably be SA, but England is not out of the question either...

Only a last second try saved Canterbury from a 29-16 defeat. Canterbury were briefly ahead at the beginning of the first half, but Auckland's sheer power won the day. It was 5 tries to 2 in the end. Interestingly Canterbury didnt concede a single penalty until 15 minutes into the second half, and only conceded two in the whole game. That has to be some kind of record.

So its very likely to be an Auckland - Waikato final. Should be quite a spectacle seeing these two old enemies compete for NPC dominance. Come to think of it, I cant remember the last time Waikato and Auckland met in an NPC final...

For any thread newcomers since the Tri-Nations, we all started with 100 Civ Gold on the basis that Civ Gold was the only stable currency on the planet. Come the November series, if you're interested in punting, you will receive 100 Civ Gold as a starting bank.

We bet on winning/losing margins rather than straight out win or lose. Before each match, we decide - by consenus - which team should be considered favourite and an appropriate margin.

Thus you can back the favoured team - with, say, a 5 1/2 point margin - which means the team must win by 6 points or more for you to collect. Or you can back their opposition, which means they have to lose by 5 points or fewer, or draw, or win the game for you to collect.

Maybe we should warm up with some bets on the NPC or the Heineken Cup.

Two results from the H-Cup :

Stade Toulousain 39 - 16 Newport (not sure of the score)
Biarritz 23 - 20 Northampton

About the Stade Toulousain it's interesting to note that they have, at last, produced a good rugby with their forwards and their backs. Last year, the Stade lost its game away from home against this same team by one point that which eliminated them from the H-Cup.

Biarritz met more problems against the Saints, while they largely dominated the match with their forwards, the backs proved unable to reach the level of their fellow forwards. The Scrum-Half and the Half-back did not launched the attacks properly while the "girlies" ( ) have not engaged themselves strongly enough thus making the work of Northampton's defense easier. As usual the english players proved solid and exhibited a strong fighting spirit. The game was won in the last minute thanks to a penalty. The referee has not commited many faults and has been even in its errors which means he has been rather good. His fairness can certainly be traced back to its origin as he is Irish with a French father.

Havak, do you know why Northampton's players are called the "Saints" ?

Waikato 41-35 Otago

With both sides getting a penalty in the opening minutes, Waikato scored the first try, which was excellently converted by Bruce Reihana from the touchline.

After a brief rest when the sprinklers turned on Otago struck back, with Danny Lee scoring the try. Two more converted tries by Waikato gave them a 24-10 lead at half-time.

After screwing up a line out, Sam Harding burst through the Waikato backs and scored the first try of the half for Otago.

Blair Feeney, Otago's kicker, had a shocking game in which he missed 21 points, IIRC, but clawed the score to 24-18.

Keith Lowen was driven over the line by the Waikato forwards, and Regan King scored his second soon after, bringing the score to 38-18.

However, Otago quickly replied with Seru Rabeni socring a try. Bruce Reihana scored another penalty.

Although Otago had lost the war, the won the battle. Finishing with two tries at the end, it wasn't enough to stop Waikato.

The final will be held at Waikato next Saturday, with Waikato playing Auckland.

With those sorts of scores, I now understand why some have questioned the value of aspects of this competition.

Tamerlin, if Northampton were an Australian team, they would be called the Saints because they were the exact opposite - a pack of villains. For some reason, Australians nickname things and people the exact opposite of what they are - people with red hair are called "Blue", very tall people are called "Shorty", and so on. We're a weird mob.

Edit. Here's the real reason why they're called the Saints:
