can you briefly discuss the german flag? i'm quite interested in what the orange, black, red and symbolizes.

(and there are some other flags that just rotate / mix up the german flag, maybe i could see a reason)

As far as i remember my history lessons the colours of our flag come from the first german democratic rebelion in 1848!

there is a song wich explains thenm as: "Schwarz wie das Pulver, rot wie das Blut und golden wie die aufgehende Sonne." which translates to black like the powder (gunpowder), red like the blood and golden like the dawning sun." They tried to install a democracy in germany and knew that they would need powder to shoot the aristocrats that they would have to pay in blood for their cause and they hoped for the light of the dawn at the end of the way....

on 1832 on the "hambacher fest" many people (more than 30 000 ) demonstrated for a democratic constitiution under this flag. later all the democratic movements in germany took this flag.

The colors of our flag were the colors of the uniforms of some german (prussian) regiments during the napoleonic wars. A regiment called 'Lützower Freicorps' was very brave and had always fought in the first battle line. These soldiers fought for their freedom and not for their King. So the german democrats used this colors to show that the battles were fought for a united germany and not for the prussian king. But their revolution in 1848 failed because of the strong prussian army. Some years later Bismarck unites Germany with 'a revolution from above'. But Bismarcks system wasn't a democratic system.

i am also a broadband user, and i dont even look at poly's popups anyway, so i never really understood the scam.

i'm sure if you complain to markos or dan they'd at least look into it.

I'm sure, I would better remember Cynthias lovley backside than the German lessions... Btw, here is lesson N°2: "zwanzig" is correct, but "dreizig" is wrote with "sz" = ß - "dreißig". Strange, isn't it?

It's not only a popup, it runs an installation routine, and I have 4 or 5 times to press "No" or "Cancel" to get it stopped. It's so annoying...

Back to flag question... why is belgian flag the same three colors of german flag but vertical? (and diff order) Is there any similar meaning to the belgian flag? maybe i should be directing this question to alva, who posted above.. (who has a belgian flag)

eug, IIRC
red: the color of wallons (the french/south part)
yellow: the color of flanders (the dutch/northeren part)
black: mourning

And our flag is vertical striped because we were victorious in battle


But I'm sure DeepO will post the correct explanation
(IIRC, he had a good spirited debate on this with the mods when the flags were introduced )

AFAIK, Belgian's flag layout comes from the French one (Belgium gained its independence a few decades after the French Revolution). The colors doesn't come from Germany but from the Brabant's coats of arms (Brabant is the province surrounding Brussels). But I don't know where the Brabant's color comes from

The colors are taken of the chevron from the duke of Brabant. (<--province)
It depicted a golden lion (yellow), while it had a saber (black) in the background who's claws and tongue were red.
