As for entombed, doesn't mean people that haven't heard of them should check out clandestine (the only album I got, I'm a cheap, never buys much) from 1991 is it not?

"Clandestine" is good, "Left Hand Path" better, IMO. Later albums...
Sometimes ENTOMBED are really good live, though! Saw them on Sweden Rock Festival a couple of years ago, nice show!

I honestly didn't mean to offend anyone I just really didn't know of any bands that came out of Europe. From the list I'm assuming its like everywhere else, tons of crap music hiding really good music that you have to search for.

well yeah that is true for current music.

They produced so much good music in the 60's, 70's, 80's, and even a little bit in the 90's. But now there seems to be nothing.

Havent seen them, but Laibach was in Zagreb (my city)yesterday. Some friends went but I m not that much into them to go to a concert.. they say it was good though

funny thing this tour of theirs is lasting 5 or 6 years already, since their last album. they go and play in weirdest places like siberian russia and such.

Vet, I don't know how the size of the country matters... Or that I know about them - I've been into industrial since I was a teenager.

I'm not saying that Laibach haven't been influential, but I don't think in the same way as Rammstein. Rammstein sparked a revival for heavy industrial which we can still see the effects of. Look at bands like Powerman 5000, Drowning Pool etc.

Rammstein certainly were influenced by Laibach. Laibach were in turn influences by Queen and Wagner. Queen were influenced by Beatles and Elvis. But all these bands took the music one step further - Rammstein added quite a lot of aggression to the sound, making it IMO better than Laibach's. (Even though it is a gradual distinction).

If you ever get a chance to see Rammstein live, take it. The singer is obsessed with fire, so the entire show is one long pyromaniacs wet dream... And with the energy of the music blasting, the mosh pit is amazing.

I wasn;t aware that Laibach still toured. I thought they were spending all their energy on promoting the Neue Kroatiske Kunst instutite... I kind of stopped listening after I moved to the states... Have they done something comparable to Opus Dei recently?

I saw them in Arvika 2000, they mostly played songs from Jesus Christ Superstars + the obvious Alle Gegen Alle, Geburt Einer Nation and Final Countdown (well in Sweden at least). Don't think they've released anything new since 96.

Well, there is a lot of great music that is made in Europe. The only problem is that they are usually in another language other than English, which dooms their popularity outside their country! Same thing with actors, very few come form non-english speaking countries despite the fact that there are lots of great actors out there. Of course there are some exceptions and some make it but that's very very few!

MTV?

all the best club DJs come from Europe. Europe's the centre of techno/trance/lounce music without a doubt.

Classical is all very much alive here too. Where do you think the Three Tenors come from? Or the mode "modern" classical stars like Andrea Bochelli?

Plenty of European MTV crap out there too. All sucks, but so does American MTV crap. And that includes R&B, Rap and all that ****.

So what music are we talking about really? Since none of the continental European nations has english as a first language, a lot of music is made with lyrics in different languages. Those songs aren't likely to be released abroad. And no, we don't make country music here, or a lot of gospel.

The thing you're probably refering to is rock music, as if it was the only music genre that could possibly be considered "good". There is a lot of gothic/industrial rock from the continent (as was already pointed out earlier in this thread). Just not a lot of your s/happy blink182-wanna-be music. And if there is, it probably won't be released in the states either because you already have too much of it on the market.

Well there are also other genres than rock, pop etc.

Laika
Entehni
Kritika
Nisiotika
Ipirotika
and the infamous Scyladika

just to name a few.

And they don't sound at all the same.

There's good music, and different (not all the genres I mentioned have the well known by now bouzouki in them ) but the language barrier and the global mass culture distribution outlets just keep them inside each country, for the most part.

I absolutely love the different emotions each genre can invoke in me and by different genre I don't mean rock vs pop but rock vs kritika for example. And while music is one they do plunge you into a completely different musical universe each of them. Each having its own unique charms.

80% of all music which is bought in Greece comes from Greek bands/artists/schemes. The highest % of domestic music buying in the EU according to a study 3 years ago.

That would be good if 80% of it all (of what gets on TV and most of the radio rather) didn't sound complete and utter discusting crap. (to me at least).

Well, Paiktis mentioned the different Greek music styles but there are a lot of different styles in all of Europe. There is Al Di Meola for example that some of you may know who comes from Spain, another one is Bregovic who comes from ex-Yuguslavia and has very good and interesting music. So of course there is good music, lots of times better than all the music you meant but you have to be both open and adventurous!

When I was in France, I heard the most god-awful rap I had ever heard. Then, last year at GW, a friend played this chinese rap as a joke, but THAT, my friends, was THE worst. Hip Hop is an American artform. Hip Hop culture can not be replicated elsewhere, and likewise, good hip hop music can not come from elsewhere. So to all you Eurotrash who think it's cool to rap in French or German, it definitely is not. It sucks big balls.

Nobody claims otherwise. Good Rap comes from the US but you should know that there are literally thousands of different styles out there that you never heard of or never will because of the language/cultural barriers!
