Fez, I realize this is a threadjack but I have a question I want to ask of you.
Growing up I was taught that homosexuality was a sin, a choice and not a predispostion. Now I have come to believe that homosexuals indeed are different from heterosxuals due to some biological or genetic factor.
This leads me to conclude that homosexuals should be treated with equal respect and affection irrespective of any religious teaching. There is no basis for predudice at all.
But homosexuals would still have to be classified as defective nonetheless because they do not normally reproduce. If all humans were homosexual the human race would become extinct.
Do you agree with my thoughts?
BTW, I support BAMing, I think it has a valid place in the discussios here since these are not formal debates per se.

So are sterile people also "defective"? What about those who choose not to have children?
Labeling people as "defective" is the start of a long slippery slope. No, strike that, it's already 2/3s of the way to the bottom.

Further, how do immoral acts in the past justify immoral actions today?
*Note - I'm defining restricting liberties in wartime as immoral.

> Except this time we're being asked to tolerate restrictions on civil liberties for an indefinite period of time.
Well, to be fair, we're always being asked (actually, told) by the government that it's essential that we give up our civil liberties. That's what governments do -- they centralize power and try their best to turn everybody into a well-behaved, tax-paying prisoner. And don't think for a minute that it matters whether that government is liberal, conservative, or moderate -- it's an iron Weberian law of bureaucracy.
This is one of the times when the public is receptive to the idea, because they're scared sh1tless. Seems to happens about every 50 years -- the Anarchist Scare of the 1900's, the early Cold War of the 1950's, and now the Angry Towelhead Scare of the 2000's. During those times government officials get away with all sorts of nasty crap, and the public gains a false sense of security (which really is pretty valuable, since people produce more, spend more, and make more taxpayers when they feel safe).
As for whether the lunatic right wing is deserting Bush, man we could only hope. Granted that the Bushies' economic plan is still a pretty disgusting rape of 95% of our nation for the benefit of him and his friends, that alone would be far more acceptable than that coupled with an utter disregard for American values of tolerance and respect for various minorities. So perhaps we'll luck out and Ralph Reed will pull up stakes and take his one million moron march to heaven, but I wouldn't count on it. After twenty years, his ilk finally have the chance to truly poison American governance for a generation (or until the electorate wises up, whichever comes first).
The right wing coalition of wealthy cynics and bigoted "idealists" is going to break up eventually because the wealthy can't win without the bigots' votes, but the wealthy also can't win if they enact the bigots' policies because the rest of the country will puke on them. The GOP's only hope is for Bush to keep promising the KKKhristian Right the world and somehow blame someone (I dunno, blacks, women, fire ants) for not delivering, but even though the bigots are dumb, their leaders are not politically dumb, and they are going to see through it pretty fast.
