Well for one being gay is not being "macho" according to most latin americans. And not being "macho" is a bad thing.

The Presidental Elections are coming up with Menem currently holding the lead. I do not know about his policies towards gays but traditionally the peronistas have held hatred towards the gay portion of the population.
