Well the suggestions in this thread will be evaluated when I feel a bit more enthusiastic and confident and have some inkling what I want to do with my life.

But get your arse into gear Mercator, just remember, it's not that bad when you get stuck into it (although it is bloody hard to convince yourself of that )

Fair point good Dr, I'm sure it helps many people, but I have experience of friends using anti-depressents and getting much worse. I just wanted to offer a friendly warning that antidepressants are right for some people and wrong for others, and you don't know which you are until you try.

Funnily enough Jesus didn't help me.

I don't want to sound like I know everything, I have never been depressed to the point of needing prescription medicine, I can only suggest what helped me.

Get outside in the fresh air, exercise (endorphins do a wonderful things) and increase your comfort zone.

GP,

Crap, why do I always see these long after they are relevant? Next time you are in the area, just drop me a pm or email me. I am pretty good about checking my email every other day at least, and I am on Poly about 5 days a week at work. Anyway, sorry I missed you!

Seriously, though, good luck Rich. I hope the pills help you in the immediate future and you are able to find a longer term solution to your problems.

Woah! Now I can start to feel some effect from this stuff (good effects). I have been out tonight and I felt no anxiety whatsoever and incredibly relaxed and unthreatened, and just laying in bed going to sleep I felt incredibly serene and relaxed, as I do now, and it is, well, strange but nice...

I mean, the experience when I was laying there relaxing was really weird but nice, and it seemed like flute music was playing in the background...I know that must sound really, really strange, but it is true. And at the moment I feel in an incredibly light, relaxed and...dare I say it...happy mood. And despite the fact that, all in all, it was a sh*t night...it hasn't really rattled me or given me a depressive episode, like it would normally, in the slightest.

Without getting too philosophical, do the drugs take away improper feelings of depression or create a false sense of euphoria? Could you use dope or booze to get the proper effects (not a troll or rhetorical question. I really wonder and want to get the Doc's take.)

They don't create false states of euphoria, they just tend to prevent the extreme peaks and troughs of emotion. You never feel insanely up about things, or really down about them.

How does it compare to the effect of booze? (I know you don't get stupid like with booze. but is the numbing similar?)

It was quite a high last night, but most of that was because of it's relative feeling compared to normal. The main effect last night was the seemingly complete elimination of my anxiety attacks which would make it impossible to have any kind of good night on most occasions. I didn't have any of that, hell, I didn't even feel the need to drink either and was quite relaxed and calm all night, something I never have.

Is it the same as alcohol? No, completely different. Now for me, alcohol could have some powerful depressive effects, so the problems more than cancelled out the benefits. But now I don't feel I need to do that.

I still think you should look into a Master's swim group. It will get you buff. And you will meet some good guys and get set up with their wives freinds. That's how it always works.

Well people, I suppose it is time for an update

Well there was that bit on Saturday night but that wore off quite promptly, but they seem to be kicking in properly now quite well. No real side effects...as well as acting very effectively on the depression and the anxiety, it has also brought my appetite for food under control a bit more, which is quite interesting as well...I used to be a glutton but now I seem to have lost a lot of the compulsion to eat I used to have...

So all is well

Do you know if the stuff you're eating works or if it's just a psychological effect? It would be interesting to give you placebo and see how you react to that.

If it was placebo effect I would have had the placebo effect much earlier...but this has been 2 weeks coming. And no, it feels completely different to how I would normally feel, as I said, I didn't have that level of control over how I felt.
