	Just Saw 'Two Towers' Increase Your PM Length

Was waiting until I could go see it with my g/f. She prefered seeing FOTR on DVD on my comfy couch rather than sit for 3 hours in movie seats. I, on the other land, love the movies.

First things first, the theather was PACKED! It's been out three weeks!! WOW.

Secondly, I enjoyed it, but was disappointed in a few things. Faramir was more noble in the books and I'd prefer he be that way in the movie. The whole Gimli humor thing got tiresome after a while. I guess that is because after Sam, Gimli is my favorite character in LOTR. I guess Jackson figured since he was small, he could easily be made fun of. The Ents should been portrayed more majestically. They were instead shown as dumb walking trees.

I liked the addition of the Elves to Helm's Deep, it made the defense more believable. The touches showing young kids in military garb was great as well, showing the graveness of situation.

I can't wait for ROTK, but I hope Gimli isn't the butt of all jokes again, and I really, really want to see the trek into Mordor.

As much as I loved Two Towers, it really seemed somewhat unpolished. A few of the things you mentioned, along with Aragorn's little trek off to no where, and some other minor plot threads that seemed to fade into oblivion made the movie seem somewhat unfinished, in my eyes.

Compared to the first one the two towers was kind of lame. It also deviated from the book a lot more. In the first one they eliminated things from the book but they didn't just invent anything out of thin air. Supposedly the movie studio spent so much money on the series that it would have gone bankrupt if the series didn't pan out. So with the first one they desperately wanted to stay true to the books so as to gain fan approval of the movie.

The first one payed for all three movies though so without the fear that the whole studio would go belly up they've began to deviate more and more from the real story.

Very true... maybe since they have a schedule for Christmas release, Jackson wasn't able to put all the polish he wanted on this one. I thought the first one was definetly better polished.

Oerdin, since they filmed all three at once, I don't think your theory pans out.

I enjoyed TTT immensely, probably more than Fellowship, because there wasn't so much exposition. The only complaint I had was the dragging flashback to Rivendale, which seemed like something they had cut out of the first film and tacked onto the second. I LOVED Gollum. He made the movie for me. I do agree that Gimgli was too comical, though the bit where they are on the wall was kinda funny.

And Orlando Bloom makes me wet.

But they didn't edit them at the same time. They filmed new scenes this year when they felt they needed them after some editing.

After seeing TTT, I'll probably get it on DVD, but I didn't like it as much as FOTR.

Oh, and can someone PLEASE tell me what was the deal with Aragorn falling off the cliff and wandering aimlessly for days? What did that do?

I don't mind some changes, but adding things that draw the movie out and make it a little more boring (the Aragorn scene... Pippen and Merry just bobbing on Treebeard) don't do anything for the movie. If there need to be long drawn out scenes, I'd prefer it to focus on Sam and Frodo making their way to Mordor.

It allowed PJ to give Éowyn more to do (the primary purpose, I think), and allowed him to give the defenders advanced notice of the attack without complicating the story further (whereas in the book, they expect an attack because they meet people fleeing the Ford of Isen, a detail completely omitted from the movie).

And as for making the Merry and Pippin part more boring, you must not have read the book recently. All they do is walk around and talk, it's interesting enough to read but would be hell for an audience to sit through. PJ made it less boring, not more.


I don't agree with absolutely everything he did, but I generally understand the reasons.

I agree. They can change things if they want but the changes should make sense and they shouldn't be dumb. The Aragon scene didn't add anything nor does the one where Treebeard and the council of ents deciding not to join then changing their mind. In the book the council voted to attack Sauruman. Having a hundred ents just suddenly jump out of no where after voting not to go to war is sort of dumb.

I'd also veto the elves showing up at helms deep since it doesn't make sense for them to march from Rivendale to Helmsdeep; especially because if you look at a map of Middle Earth they'd have to go through either Sauruman's territory or Murkwood.

The whole dipiction of Faramir didn't add to the charactor nor did it make the story any better so why turn it into a 15 minute scene? The original story about Faramir was better and shorter.

I can go on and on about this sort of stuff. The film company got lazy with this one and just kind of winged their way through it.

If he wanted to show them doing something with treebeard then why not at least show them drinking the ent drink or play up their speech at the ent moot or their part in the attack at Issengard or something?

I know they go around talking, but why draw it out in a movie with limited time when you could go do other things?! If you are going to spend that much time on the talking, make it INTERESTING, like in the book, where they talked with Treebeard about the origin of the Orcs and the Entwives, etc. Not the BS they were going on about.

I loved the Ents in the book... PJ killed them for me in the movie.

I found that the only half-decent bit of TTT was the storyline following Aragorn/Legolas/Gimli. Gollum would've been very good (they did the whole multiple personality disorder thing really well) except a bunch of morons in the row behind us thought it was funny.

Everything else...meh. Take it or leave it, and mostly I left it. They went way too far from the book in a lot of things - Faramir was supposed to refuse the ring outright for one thing (at least IIRC). TTT is IMHO the best book, but it made for the worst film so far...FOTR far outdid it.

actually i did laugh at golum because i thought it was funny and not reading the books i dont know what happened to golum and such.

well i do now, but i feel so bad for him. i mean he wants to be good and frodo that mother****er betrays him. really golum is the second onscreen character ive ever felt an emotional attachment to (the first being the last replicant to die in blade runner).

and now i find out he dies in the next movie. its so sad. i wish i could save him...he deserves to be saved...poor soul

They played Gollum for sympathy rather than for humour, which I thought was the right way to do it - the ring's corrupted him so badly and yet he still has a (fading) good side...
Oh and then he leads the hobbits to Shelob. Buuuut we can't all be perfect.

I know, have you noticed there is this certain snobby elitism from these people who have read the books. I must admit the 'I read the book and it was better' crowd (referring to any film) really irritate me

To add to the general consensus: not as good as FOTR.

There was not enough one on one combat, just a load of useless orcs to hack through. Nothing as tough as the cave troll or the tough orc at the end of FOTR.

Legolas was just too goddamn tough. Gimli was just to goddamn silly.

Helms Deep was a good battle scene (the crunching of the orcs when the boulders fell on them was particularly cool) but a slightly poor action scene, given the complete invulnerability of the main characters.

I liked Theoden. He seemed more likable and believable than the other characters. He also had some good lines. The Boromir of TTT.

They didn't need to ride out at the end like that.

Why include the 'wildmen'? They serve only to confuse.
