About the religious nuts being kicked out of England - well this certainly is true. There were many who came here seeking refuge from state religions. Thus, you see in our constitution the separation of church and state. This is a philosophy of government that is far more advanced than the state religions that still pertain in Europe and which are the ultimate goal of such modernists as Osama bin Laden.

Yes but of course that doesn't mean that there isn't freedom of belief in most (or all?) European countries. I don't think that is Osama's ultimate goal...


This is an interesting subject btw. I lived in the US from age 1 to 5 so I don't really remember much, but I do remember that the kindergarden teachers were really strict. Does child raising differ much between the US and Europe? Maybe I should call and ask my mum.

We spank! I don't know when you went to kindergarten here. Teachers can't spank anymore, but they did when I was in grade school.

That brings up another subject, Education. I think things are getting bad everywhere, but it is especially bad here. The main culpret is the parents I think. They just don't care.

That is truly baffling.

Could you explain how the UK has a system of government that OBL has as his ultimate goal?

Or more simply explain how the UK government is less secular (in practice) than the US?

no they didn't spank me but I had to sit in the "time out chair" for half an hour or so if I did something wrong. and we were told to "sit still" and "behave" all the time

I think American kids are more figity. That's why the teachers are like that. A half an hour is too long though. I'm sorry about that.

I must admit the christianty of the US isn't much of a difference with most of the West.
While christianty has a huge role in American politics and American identity (President's pledge on the Bible, pupils' pledge, all the debate on creationism and abortion which are clearly fueled by religious nonsense debates), it is not really different than some European countries : Germany's right wing party is clearly religious, religion has a very significant impact on Portugal's politics, and most of the European Parlament's representatives are more or less against abortion.

However Ned, I can tell you that it isn't enough to write in legal texts that religion and state are separated, for it to be real. In France, the separation occured in 1905, and was an extremely tense struggle between the Republic and the Church : many goods belonging to the Church have been taken, schools were agressively worldly, and remain so somehow (often, muslim students with scarf of the head are expelled), and every thing which wasn't complete by the time is a very sensible topic every time a politician dares to touch the old status quo (every time the funding of private / religious schools change in comparison of public schools, you have millions of demonstrators, whatever the chosen side)
This painful experience mostly separated French politics from Religion. But it was much more than some text nobody bothers to read.
(in Germany, I was really surprised to see ads for churches, political speeches featuring the word "god" etc.)

I think NL legalized abortion first (at least, it was the well known destination for women who wanted to abort during the sixties).
I was talking about the parlament of the EU (the one with no power, and with second-rank politicians in), not the Parliaments of European countries.
AFAIK, there is no serious anti-abortionist organized movement in the EU as in the US, and I have long not seen any anti-abortionist demonstration. However, many people do think that abortion is bad, and should be very much regulated, or banned.
In Germany, before aborting, it is mandatory to go see an "advisor" from your religion, whose purpose will be to discourage you to abort, for example.

I always wondered how abortion was in other countries.

If I am not mistaken, once it was on demand. however now, there is a comittee of social workers etc. that talks to the woman before that.

But I think that this is a non-issue in Israel, more or less. for crying out loud, USE CONDOMS!

I was recently told that a Finnish study into abortions showed that mothers who had abortions are several times more likely to commit suicide than mothers who continued to term.

BTW- I think there is another study as well, with similar findings. I'll see if I can dredge it up.

Maybe we can talk about other differences than purely political ones.
For example, I noticed that American movies have a clear difference with European ones : every detail is reworked, and the whole movie is artifical. OTOH, in European movies, many details are left untouched : weather is often plain, actors wear discreet make up, and sometimes it doesn't even hide the imperfections of the skin, etc.
There seems to be a higher love for looks in American movie industry, but I don't know if it's true in the society as well.

No. Here in the South we are completely unconcerned about Finnish issues. I, for one, do not speak the language ad have never desired to, trusting that any Finn who ever appeared within speaking distance of me would almost certainly speak English.

They're Finns for goodness sake! Their national animal is the lemming! Nothing that happens in Finland can be applied to people!
