The thing you have to remember about Canada is you need to have the balls to survive the cold.

It's -21C outside right now, 3pm on the afternoon.
-30C with windchill.

But other than that it's great. Majestic Rocky mountains, world-class skiing, exceptionally low crime rate, booming economy, culturally diverse community, great schools, etc.

There's a very large Indian community here.

Well, the specific area where I live (basically a suburb of San Antonio, tho its actually in the middle of the city...) has the only real Indian/Hindu community. Most of the those families are in the hotel/motel business, and they are all doing quite well. I remember several years ago in my freshman geography class, one of the Indian upperclassman (very attractive cheerleader she was ) came in and told us about their immigration and how far they had come, and told us a little about the Hindu community here in town... unfortunately it was long ago and I dont remember much.
But compared to the city's population of nearly 1.5 million (about 15%african american, 50%hispanic, IIRC), the Indian population is very small.

As for other parts of Texas, i couldnt tell you. For some reason i have the idea that Houston has a substancial population, but I dunno why i think that. The city itself is massive tho, 4th largest in the country with a population around 4 million IIRC. I was thinking about moving there for college (Rice university), but they didnt have an aerospace program. Great city, but may be too large by your standards.

South texas has a large hispanic population, north has a large white population, and other minorities are just sprinkled throughout. I dunno if this info in is much help. if i find out more ill post it.

I was just this second looking at a property in Potomac !

I can afford realistically upto $300k, however, id prefer something lower than that, just to increase my available income if anything. Its all very good and nice to have a palace, but to live on beans on toast also.. nahh ..

Asher, id love to live in Canada, I actually like the cold (well, I say cold, -20'c would probably test me, as ive only ever really experienced -11'c once, and it wasn't pleasant). Its my wife who (I almost said "Has no balls" ha ha ha ha ha ) really could not cope, I think she would struggle. . and nevermind her mum, it was 20'c here last summer, and she sat there shivering and kept putting the damn heating on .. Aaaagh ..

I take the point regards to transport, London is pretty naff also, but tube stations are in high demand.. is it cheap to travel by metro in Washington ?? Its really expensive in London, and very cheap in Toronto.

Look more at Fairfax for IT. NW DC if you like the urban life--you can commute out. Montgomery for IT for the biotech industry, etc. Lots of government IT all around, which you wouldn't be able to do (requires a clearance).

As much as I think the Metro is great, most IT jobs aren't on one of the lines. You will be driving.

But I have to say, DC is damn hot in the Summer. Can you take it?

ha ha .. now this is true DanS, my wife can't take the cold, and I sunburn in the winter .. If ever there was a case-study on natural selection, me (Viking decent) picking an Indian as a wife certainly worked, as my daughter Tarika seems to like the hot and cold, and doesn't burn at all .. lucky devil.

Seriously though, If it lasts a few months, I can take 30-40 for that period, I have to be careful, but you get use to it, if it was 30-40'c for more than say 3 months continuesly, id really hate it.

Ottawa and area might be a good place, considering your desire for an IT job. Canada has it's version of "Silicon Valley" in that area. I'm not sure about the S.Asian population, but it's certainly a good place to bring up a kid. And it's the cultural as well as the political capital of Canada so there's all sorts of things going on.

Summers are nice there, if a bit muggy at times, but there's usually lots of snow in the winter, and it can get rather cold.

Im turning my attentions to Vancouver as we speak .. Washington DC certainly has many opportunities, and although it is true I could not get a job in any reasonably secure environments, It still has plenty of options. Most certainly affordable !

Where abouts in the Pacific NW was you thinking Jon, or was it the whole thing ?

One difference though is that the UK has a much better public transit system. North America in many ways was built with the auto in mind, it's sometimes very difficult to do anything without one.

Ive heard about the rain in the NW, is it really that bad ??

The transport system in the UK is not as good as you think, London is ok (although its getting worse), but most other places have real bad transport. Where I live, you can't do anything without a car, and I travel 15miles to work (30 miles a day).. its really adds up.

I guess the real matter is, I can travel for 1 hour and get from Newcastle (Facing the North Sea) to Carlise (Facing the Irish Sea) coast to coast ... you couldn't do that in Concord over the states/canada .. so there is a economy of scale involved.

I recommend that you take a look at Omaha, Nebraska. It's a center for the IT industry and has a much lower cost-of-living than the other cities mentioned. It also has a growing Indian community and lacks the traffic and crime problems you find elsewhere. It's one of the best small cities in America, IMO, so check it out.
