Now that we have a private forum, we can more seriously discuss our civ choices.

Of course want to consider civ traits and UUs, but one other thing that needs to be considered is a civ's image. Will other teams want to cooperate with the civ we choose? Will other teams view us as more or lesss trustworthy or threatening? Will other teams want to attack us before we get a valuable UU? With other teams NOT want to attack us due to our very powerful UU?

Let's say you're playing Civ in the early game. Space is tight. You need to expand and have to choose between two neighbors. Your neighbors are Persia and Carthage. Who would you attack if all things are otherwise equal?

Just by being a certain civ, you increase or decrease the chances of being assaulted at different stages of the game, as all players know the strengths and weaknesses of all of the other civs.

Excellent point!

Let the debate continue here. I will set the new poll up as early as possible next week, when some of the key game parameters are set. For now, it is looking like 6 teams, no AI's, standard map size, regent level for difficulty. The key question will be landmass - random or otherwise. If not random - then I doubt any of the other sites will go for archipelago, although I agree wholeheartedly with roadcage that such a set up would be an excellent, albeit different-flavored, test of our civ abilities.

Now that we have our private forum, here our my thoughts:

I agree that Carthage is number one choice. Numidiam Merc. & Ind+commercial is very powerful. I think we need a second choice because multiple teams will probably go for it.

Possible second choice options:

Persia: Immortals and Industrious. I am in favor of Industrious if we go for a good ancient UU (War Chariots don't count, IMHO, though were are Egypt in the current SPDG). I would stay away from later UU's as early fighting will likely occur.

Iroquois: If we dont go the Industrious route, we should go for the Expansionist/Religious combo. These two traits combined can result in rapid tech advancement in the ancient age and a very useful UU.

As for traits, unless using it in combo with Industrious, Stay away from Commercial. Scientific is a very weak trait in general, so avoid that also. We will build barradks anyways, so Miliitaristic isnt that valuable. I say go for combo on Exp/Ind/Rel, with ancient UU. The only other I might consider is India. a UU in the middle ages might be useful if we get bad luck with the resource placement.

Yes they were.
