I forgot to notice that 5 is temporary.

if Sharon is incapable of going beyond 5, expect a major crises, and Mitzna and Avodah to make a comeback.

By the time 5 will be implemented Sharon will have lost the role of Prime Minister.

Full PM-box? Change here!

Hmm, sorry for posting so late, I worked in the elections was back home at 2AM, only to wake up around 6AM to go and probably fail the test in C programming.

And this just in: "Labor wins a landslide victory.... In Quiryat Tivon"

I am actually quite optimistic about the following government, if it holds water.

We have

Likud:37
+
Shinui:15 = 52
+
IsraelBaAliya:2 = 54
+
Mafdal:5 = 59
+
Am Ehad:4 = 63

Apparently this is the only workable coalition, at present stage. That is, unless labor loses ALL credibility whatsoever.

Issues for the next government:
1)Security:
After the war on Iraq, the Bush administration will surely take up with our issue. The government above is perfectly flexible to stay in line with the Americans, and that's just what Israel needs, geo-politically. IMO, however, we shouldn't be so openly hostile towards mainland europe. The building of the wall should continue with greater speed. And Sharon should repeat that he's waiting for palestinians to lay down their weapons, and move towards peace. It is in Sharon's personal best interest too, as he is not running for re-election next elections.

2)Economy: We're currently knee-deep in ****, despite the fact that it is perfectly explainable, considering the death of dot-com.
There are two big problems: gaps between the rich and the poor, and the recession. However there are good signs. The 3 main Israeli software exporters are actually doing very well, keeping posting profits above analysts' expectations. So do the pharmaceuticals. Intel keeps exporting at more than a billion USD, but generally the electronics are in a bit of trouble. This is hardly the fault of the Israeli government, though.
What needs to be done is the improvement of infrastructure, by dramatically increasing spending in that area. We also need to crack down on illegal foreign workers, and make an effort to employ Israeli workforce in that area. There are ways, and if the laws were abided ( foreign workers should be paid minimum wages, but THEY'RE NOT! ) things would be well, esp. since there is no competition from the outside on contruction. . I would also propose that courses would open with these types of jobs in mind. training high quality construction workers, and their sallaries to be suplimented above the minimum wage, While cutting down on welfare for the unemployed. If there are jobs, and they pay well, I don't think it is wise from ANY point of view to pay people despite them staying at home.

Peace would be too harmful, as well.

The gaps between the rich and the poor: Israel should cancel caps on social security payments, and fight the trend of people establishing bogus companies, so that they can avoid paying social security. I don't really know how.

President Prodi congratulates Israeli Prime Minister Sharon following the elections

European Commission President Romano Prodi had a long telephone conversation yesterday with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

President Prodi congratulated the Israeli Premier on his victory at the polls and expressed the hope that new impetus would now be given to the peace process with a view to finding a solution to the Israel-Palestine crisis. President Prodi reiterated his total condemnation of all forms of terrorism and said the process must bring the Israelis a guarantee of their right to security and peace and at the same time ensure the Palestinians enjoyed similar rights.

Prime Minister Sharon thanked the President for his message and assured him that the search for a settlement that would bring peace and stability to the region was his top priority. He also said he would work to that end in consultation with the United States and without undervaluing the role Europe could play and its constructive contribution to the process.

End

The usual. It's the bad or the even worse.

Yes, Sharon sucked, but the only true alternative was an Osloid who wants to do the Oslo mistakes on an even larger scale.

Mafdal are religious but not Haredim. They are also Zionist, they work and they serve in the army, all unlike the Haredim.

Most of their voters are settlers.

This works - until -
1. Iraq goes down.
2. There are now 150000 US troops occupying a still turbulent iraq, the rest of the arab world is restive
3. There is strong pressure on the US to do something about Israel-Pal situation\
4. Bush and powell to Sharon - ok, weve finally come through and gotten rid of Saddam, now help us out
5. Sharon - get rid of Arafat first
6. PA - we'l move ahead on political reform AFTER israel makes at least symbolic dismatling of recent settlements. We will however make real security concessions before that)
7. Powell to Sharon - will you sign this deal (sec concessions for settlement dismantling)
At this point Sharon loses either Mafdal or Shinui, and needs either the Labor (if he gives up AAMafdal) or the hard right (if he gives up Shinui)

I give the above govt (with Shinui and Mafdal) less than 3 months.

Ok, after some thought, here's my analysis.

Assume a scale of -5 till +5, where - is the left and + is the right.

Sharon has made some serious promises to the Bush Administration and is dependant on their money(in addition to the regular aid). He also softened in the last couple years.
So Sharon cannot go to the right farther than +1.

To the left, Sharon can offer a lot to them, but not farther than -1, he is Sharon after all.

The problem is that the Labor is now controlled by the almost radical left. Mitzna is somewhere between -3 and -2.
So for them to join either Sharon has to break even harder to the left, which is not going to happen, or Mitzna and his friend a bit to the center. Possible, but not unlikely.

On the right, the only one who can join is Shas, being a political whore.
+1 is too moderate for the Mafdal and the National Union so they wont join either.

Conclusion :

Sharon is ****ed.

But Fuad would be delighted with -1 - as would Lapid, and very importantly, George W. Bush.

So the theme will be "the temptation of Labor"

Add US troops on the ground in Iraq into the mix, with US pushing Sharon left, and pushing Mitzna toward a coalition.

After counting the soldiers' votes the Likud increased to 38 and the Mafdal to 6. Am Echad and Hadash both fallen from 4 to 3.

In total, the right wing block increased from 67 to 69.

For Boshko: Am Ehad is a party founded by the Israeli trade unions. They have a good social agenda. Sadly, these are the same trade unions that make the government pay the Utilities monopolies the highest paychecks ever, twice than the average. and the National Electricity Company workers get free electricity.

Gawd, I wish I worked for the electrical company.

And until Mafdal loses the "Spine", yes, it seems that we're heading towards another elections campaign.

Oslo was not a mistake. The mistake was to elect right-wing morons that only hindered the procceeding at every foot-steps. If Barak remained at power until today he would have managed to reach an agreement with Arafat and all would be well now. But no, we had to force his hand to go to election, and then our moronic people elected Sharon, crushing any hope for salvation.

One reeps what one sews.
