	Saturday I Report To My Armory To Head Out Enter the AD-FREE zone

I got the word just now. It was kind of anti climatic in a way. Just a long list of things I have to do to get ready.

Get all my equipment ready.
Uniforms
Boots
Sleeping bag
other small stuff

get my medical records examined AGAIN
anthrax shot
filling out my will
filling out forms to keep the boss at bay while im gone


It's all kind of surreal. There has been debate among us when and where we will go. ON Wendsday I will no longer be under supervision of the state, we will be federalized. This is no longer an abstract concept but something that will happen. I think back to all the perks that I have enjoyed by being in the guard. Little things like free license plates to big things like college money and the chance to see beautiful places like northern Italy and Germany and Portugal. Now I get to see the not so beautiful places. I guess it's the least that I owe not only to goverment, but to the guys I have known for 11 years.

Don't forget to write a journal. I did it when I was in Kosovo and I've had a great time reading and rereading it over the last two years. Alot of things are going to happen and you never know if you'll want to write a book in the future or maybe just let your grandkids read a first hand report of what you did.

Also remember to bring alot of pogey bait (only a really soldier will know what that is ), a English to Arabic (or Turkish, or Kurdish depending on where you're going) phrase book, and lastly get lots of reading material about the history of the area your going to be stationed. This stuff becomes gold once your in country.

In the "New Army" you're not allowed to drink while on deployment. That doesn't mean we don't do it but it does mean the officers don't see it.

Yeah it means National Guard. Each state has a National Guard and during times of war and emergency they can be called up by the Federal government to active duty. This has been happening more and more in the last few years.


Kramerman: I've been in for 11 years so I have plenty of drunken GI stories already including one about three guys relieving themselves outside a bar in Italy. One of which was an officer. Unfortunately we will most likely be going to Saudi Arabia where the only thing there is to drink is bottled water. Unless you count the occasional carepackage from our loved ones back home

Oerdin: We have a few guys that have said they wanted to get back in if we went over. Have you heard any more about your chances of going back?

Yeah, I think its pretty standard that you dont wear your uniform anymore when traveling. We will most likely take a direct charted flight directly over there anyway so it will just be us. When my unit went to Saudi the last time they boarded the plane with the camo uniforms and M16s. That was a chartered civilian plane directly to Saudi though.

Spraybar: My old unit has orders to report to the Armory on the 26th of this month. I actually called up the 1SG and volenteered to go but he told me the orders had already been cut. He said if I had volenteered a month ago I could have gotten in but now I'm just on the alternate list and the alternates never go.

I guess it's just as well because I just landed a new job and they probably would be pissed if I took off for a year to go play soldier in Iraq.

Yeah I had just got offered a new job this week and accepted. Now I guess that wont be in the picture.

If you have a laptop you should take that too. Most of the time a high speed satilite data link is one of the first things to get installed on a new base. They also issued satilite phones to us in Kosovo and I know some people ( ) who used them to surf the net during the down time.

Lastly, get yourself a nice compact digital camera so you can e-mail picts home and post a few here at 'poly. Hopefully they'll have computers in the MWR tent.

My highschool graduation class had 74 people in it.
out of that (small town school)

My cousin is in Afghanistan with the Air Force
I have two friends aboard the USS Nimitz (one whose brother is on his way to Turkey)
Another friend in Germany who says he is getting ready to be deployed
Another friend in the UK that claims to be wanting to transfer.
Not to mention a friend (son of one of my Guard comrades) who is in Korea
And one female friend that is in some kind of support unit in Italy.

All that occurring before our ten year reunion in November.

Thats not including 50 or so guardsman from the town that is being sent. In a town of 2500 everyone knows someone there or about.
