I like to ask myself what can be the age of the posters, considering only what they say. In some cases, it is not difficult; GhengisFarb is seven years old, NYE is 98, and Aro has too much knowledge of the American jazzmen in Paris after WWII to be younger than 49. This pleasure was wasted by a thread where the members were invited to post a picture. About this thread, it is funny to notice that the author (OPD) started the thread in posting a picture of a guy who was reportedly looking like him, but not his own portrait. Unfortunately, nobody was shy enough to follow him in this way, and I had the surprise to discover that Spiffor looks much younger that the 43 years I thought, considering the so reasonable speeches he is able to deliver on almost any subject.
This is why, hoping that at least one member asks himself the same question, I will just say that, according to most psychologists, I am 12 (mentally), and I have been so for already many years, and I hope to remain like this for long.
From Chess, to Go (8th Wonder of the World), then to board war-game (ah, Barbarossa!), I became more and more convinced that strategy should be incorporated in the education of young men, and that Civ could contribute primarily in creating their interest toward this branch. I therefore see PTW, and the MP game between humans, as a major step in the good direction.
I think that the Apolyton community (I should say the CivIII community, since I do not visit often the other forums) is in the process of creating some new kind of relationship between people which could have a significant influence in the future.

I thought I'd wait a bit so I'm not near the front.
I started playing Civ 1 while in middle school (I'm 22 now), allowed Civ 2 to interfere with college work (well I wasn't to bad ), although I never got into Civ 2 the way I did the original. When Civ 3 came out it brought me back to the Civ world (I'd been on a Panzer General bender). I've been coming to poly for probably about 4 months now (If I'd had any idea there was such a online civ presence I would have been here long ago).
For work I make spreadsheets a databases, so if the minister of the interior ever needs a week off, I'm sure I could keep that part up . I won't be doing this forever as I plan on going to law school in 2004. As mentioned by I think Arnelos, the employment opportunities for a recent graduate are terrible right now (and trust me there a lot worse in Burlington Vermont than in D.C.), and it's amazing how little an outstanding academic record will help you .
I typically play Civ on Emperor level (I feel it allows me to balance difficulty with flexibility of play style). I've probably only actually "won" about 4 games of Civ, as I absolutely hate the end game. I play till I'm (what I consider) by far the dominant force in the world, get bored and start a new game (The fact that my old computer is unbearably slow in the end game also contributes). The last few months I've play the "double your pleasure mod" exclusively which as screwed up some of my "vanilla Civ" abilities (If I say something off the wall, like "lets mine that forest", that what caused it ). I recommend that everyone try that mod
And for the 2 people who have actually read this far in the thread, that's me...

Ok, my turn I guess
The name is alva (sort of aconym for my real name)
I'm famous for not being famous
Was born in the good old sixties but only just , enough to catch some moonwalking..
Been playing from the first civ2 version and was hooked immediately. My level is somewhere between emperor and deity for Civ3 but am still adapting to MP.
Hmm, I love cats, humor,...
I come from the land of beer ( to all you germans, dutch, aussies ) and vetoing
I'm an ex-chef, currently doing a career change.
oh yeah and I'm in with Theseus' girl (she actually encourages him to play civ , how do you that Theseus I'll never know )
That should be enough, more than enough....
Have a nice game

Davout - great post! I too still see myself as very young. Maybe that is why I was able to fool Tiberius.
And Barbarossa - if you are referring to the S&T game is one of my all time favorites.
And yes, Go is a simply amazing game, or more accurately, an amazing experience.

What is great in a properly moderated forum, is that the posters are worth what they say, and only what they say. The argument of authority (Aristoteles dixit ...) does not work; we have to explain and justify any affirmation if we want to be listen to and answered. Curriculum, age, Nobel Prize, wealth are of no help. This makes possible an almost perfect democracy. But it can remain almost perfect only if we take great care not to reintroduce, through personal particulars belonging to the Real Life (which is rather the Physical Life), all prejudices which would make difficult for a 17 years old Trip to lead the show.

Trip is 45, 50 years old... Nobody knows exactly. He only has 17 years in this theoretical dimension called "Real Life", or "Physical Life". But there's no scientific evidency of such dimension, or such kind of life.
Seriously, I don't see any harm. The profile of many people here tells the age... In fact, this just make me more impressed. My respect for people like Trip or Dominae, and dozens of others, became bigger...
And I agree with you about the meaning of all this. Do you know why? In six, seven months, I've seen more intelligence, common sense, skills, responsability, seriousness, humor (and all sort of good qualities) than I've seen in YEARS in this so-called "RL". Men like Trip or E_T, in both sides of our temporal line, kill all kind of prejudice.
I'm not naïf, I know how evil you guys can be in RL...
But... damn, it's very good to see how we can work so well together! Can you imagine that in RL?

My turn I suppose,
I'm Adc (acronym for my name). I've been a member of the Apolyton forums for almost a year, though I have to admit I rarely post. I do, however, browse the forums as often as possible (especially the creation ones). I've collected quite a lot of units scenarios and mods (love DyP)
I'm 18 (guess this makes me one of the young ones ), born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I live in the great BA area (in Boulogne Sur Mer)
I'll start studying computer engineering at a university next week, so unfortunately I'll have even less time to visit the forums.
For the past four years I've been spending both Jan and Feb (summer holidays) abroad which sometimes makes it harder for me to have regular acces to a pc. I've been in Bogotá, Houston TX (twice) and Tokyo (currently). the time zone in Japan makes it difficult for me to participate in chats, but I'll try nevertheless.
I first played civ1 on the SNES (didn't have a pc back then), then played civ2, SMAC and now Civ3 (with PTW). I'm a little bit embarassed to say that I've never beaten the game over warlord (though I have tried). My second favorite game series is SimCity, and I have created a couple of buildings for SC3KU.
to the few people who read the whole post let me say this thread is a great idea. I have to admit, when I joined I had no idea most of the members are well over 20

Now, what better description could you give of our home country?
So, I'm DeepO, a nick I choose which has nothing to do with my real name, but comes from my hobby / passion: graphic novels (strips, BDs,...). I'm a huge fan of Moebius, creator of Deepo (see my avatar)
In real life, I'm a PhD student, currently working on datamining in the process industry. I was rather late in starting a PhD (I'm 28 now), but this had everything to do with my situation: I've been an AI software engineer for a couple of years, and started to dislike the IT industry. On top of that, I got a rather grave accident with my motorcycle, which left me ample time to think of what was going to be my next move in this large strategy game they call life.
As a long time Civ player, I was active for a few months on the strat forum, where culture was one of the main focusses, mainly because I felt it was very misunderstood. But once Coracle left us alone, and Candle'Bre took more free time, I got rather inactive there. I couldn't resist joining GS though, where I'm discussing more or less everything, but with special attention to the diplomatic side of a MP game. This was one thing that was completely new to me, but new things are always good to study.
Joining this forum was something else, I really don't see much free time to join in on any discussion, but I both want to stay informed, and, whenever possible, vote on the issues at hand. I won't vote if I'm not sure on the situation, though...

vondrack

Well, I guess I am quite late to the party... had some urgent work to do here, you know...
vondrack is part of my very first email address I was assigned years back at the uni. The usernames at that time had to be eight characters only, so my family name, Vondracek (the first name is Radek), had to be shortened to fit in. When internet evolved to a usable tool and I became in need of login names at various sites, I began using it - it's so weird that it's never used...
My RL life is not exactly exciting, but I can't complain either. I was 30 yo last October, make my living reselling software, mostly registered shareware (ever heard of WinZip, ARJ, Total Commander, ACDSee, WinRAR, SmartDraw? that's what pays my bills ). In the past, I did some detours, sublicensing and publishing games (Duke Nukem 3D, anyone? ), localizing several great multimedia titles... however, nothing ever turned profitable long time, but the software reselling, so that's what I stick to now. I just hope that I will once get to what I studied and got my degree in - programming.
I spend most time at my keyboard - that's why I am at Poly 16+ hours almost every day (God bless cable connections!). I usually mix my work with checking Poly boards... which makes for quite a pleasant working routine...
After years of failing attempts, I have found my Miss Right two years ago. Karina is unbelievably mature for her age (soon to be 23), letting me do whatever I wish without interfering like other women tend to. She is not really a gamer, unless you consider Centipede on her mobile phone applicable... ... but she is interested in the progress of my demogames and demands updates on almost daily bases, looking at maps, listening to what is happening and such. I love her more than anything I loved in my life ever before.
As for my gaming record. I started with the Sinclair ZX Spectrum classics - Saboteur, Commando, Dundarach... anyone ever heard about these? Then PCs... Prince of Persia, SimCity... later I developed great interest in strategy and RPG games, as these allowed me to experience various sorts of "stories" and role-playing, which I like a lot.
My most fondly remembered games include SimCity (the first one), Fantasy General (beating it on Hard with Lord Marcas is probably my greatest gaming feat ever), Warlords 1, 2, and 3, X-COM 1, Return to Krondor, Railroad Tycoon 1 & 2... I loved the Wing Commander series, also (because of the story), Fallout, Baldur's Gate, even tried some Asheron's Call and lots of SP Diablo (1&2)...
And then, of course, the Civilization series.
I have never played Civ1, started only with Civ2. That game was the only one I was getting back to over and over. Due to RL time constraints, it was usually two or three several-day heavy sessions per year, but I spent marvellous time with that game. However, when Civ3 came out, I was quick to give it a try and... never felt like going back. Playing at Monarch now, Civ3 is much more of a challenge for me... love that game and love the community here (though the community here is to blame for not actually playing the game anymore, except the DGs ).
I was not paying attention to the SPDG actually, as when playing Civ3 SP I do not really want anyone to mess with the way I like to play... but MP, that was a different thing, with playing against humans, so when invited to Legoland by Tiberius, I happily accepted. Well... things developed in a bit unexpected way and I ended up serving as the Lego President instead of remaining a learning lurker, which was more or less my original plan...
All this MP DG stuff got so interesting and fun to do that I eventually decided I would try to get more involved in this ISDG thingy... and here I am, your Consul, meddling with everything from locking threads to authorizing people into the chatroom!
I wish I develop as friendly relations here in the ISDG team as I did in the Legoland team. Looking forward to have some great fun with you!

I think they are refering to a software company named 'Spectrum'; a company who's responsible for some of the game titles previously mentioned.

Not exactly. We (well, I at least) are refering to the "little" computer called Spectrum. An 8 bits computer designed in the earlys 80s with 16k. I was too young to see that, but I had lots of entertaining hours with my own Spectrum 48k (Wow! three times the memory of the first Spectrum) and later with the last Spectrum and its incredible big amount of 128k RAM.
In fact I like computing because of the Spectrum. Without this little machine my life would be really different. I don't know if better or worst, but different.
