Hi there,
I'm Sharpe - changed my Apolyton name to my favourite literary character in the Richard Sharpe series by Bernard Cromwell. My original Poly name was VaderTwo. I work as an accountant in Toronto Canada but live in a city about 75 kms west of there.
I lurked at the alpha.owo forum then followed someone who mentioned Apolyton and lurked here for a while until the Civ 3 List started (version 1 - but we didn't know that at the time) then registered, lost my password, lurked some more, got it back , lurked even more (not hard to guess why I have such a low post count after 3 1/2 years here eh?)
Later joined the Legoland team in the PTW Demo game where I am an ordinary citizen who just argues a lot (Legolanders will probably confirm this readily), but is enjoying the game and enjoying the team experience.
My Civ world began with me renting Civ 1 from a game rental store but then I kept it on my system (i.e. I pirated it) so that I could keep playing it. Before that I had mostly played Tetris, Empire, Railroad Tycoon and Pirates. I throughly enjoyed Civ 1 - but remember being stunned when I had a battleship destroyed while attacking a warrior!
Saw Civ 2 in 1996 and bought it promptly - only problem was that I couldn't have a CD drive in my computer so didn't actually play it until a year later Loved it even better - eventually got all of the expansion packs up to Test of Time. Played on the Zone until I became fed up with the cheating and dropping. Bought Civ 3 and PTW within a few days when they came out (still angry about the LE fiasco though ), still debating whether it is truly better than Civ 2... but I notice that I am playing it a lot more than Civ 2 now hmm...
Play plenty of other games (when I have the time - sigh - not as much as my university days in Civ 1 unfortunately) - seem to have a knack for picking up classics for some reason - MOO, the Age games, Starcraft, Diablo, Simcity - have about 70 or so games accumulated over the years.
Since I am at best an average player (Regent in Civ 3, King in Civ 2) and don't have a lot of time, I will be try to be active in the voting and following the game with interest, but will leave the playing to others.
Thanks!

Hi there! I'm MrWhereItsAt, and
* MrWhereItsAt lifts head, places microphone close to lips
FINALLY, MrWhereItsAt has COME BACK, to Apolyton!!
I am a 22 year old PhD student - starting my research on Monday. I live in Wellington, New Zealand, and I have recently returned home after three months in Australia (Canberra - bleagh).
Prior to this trip (academic purposes) I had been very active in every non-CtP Demo game we have running. I was Supreme Military Commander and then the final President of the first Civ Demo game. I was also Trade Supremo of the second and current game. In the SMAC Demo game I have been a Justice and held the titles of Directorship of: Peacekeeping Operations, Social Engineering, Alpha Talent and , some simultaneously! I was the first citizen to sgin up to the Civ3 Demo game and I have been both 3rd and 5th term Presidents. I am a (mostly inactive so far) member of both the Roleplay team in the PtW Demo game and of the Apolyton Intersite team. Many of ou I know and have had the pleasure of working with in some of these games.
I started Civ in 1990 when it came out. Civ2 took over in 96, then SMAC in 98. I tried CtP, yet found it severely lacking despite the nifty future stuff, and I discarded it. CtP2 has not yet dropped from full price in NZ, so I have not tried it yet. I have enjoyed SMAX and both Civ3 and PtW, which I acquired almost as soon as they hit shelves here in NZ (some months after everywhere else in the world). I have also had a reasonable experience with the Civ boardgame, which a number of us bought whilst in Oz.
I believe I am one of the longest term Civ players, and I have certainly enjoyed the chance offered by the Demo games to further my enjoyment and to test strategies.
I look forward mightily to being solidly active here again, and I am only too eager to accept responsibilities and offer help. If you need help/advice, particularly about dealing with an elected position, PM me as I am only too happy to work with all but one on this site, and I think I can offer some constructive assistance.
It's so good to be home.

hi Apolyton!
I have been long absent from these forums, because I didn't play CIV 3 for a while. (I played a lot of Warcraft 3 which consumed all the time I used to devote to civ...I know shame on me....
I recently bought PtW though and I am addicted to the game once again, like I was to Civ 1 when I first saw it (in 1993, I was 8 years old and I LOVED it )
I played Civ for years, and played some civ 2 although I did not like civ 2 as much as civ 1, but when I heard civ 3 came out I landed on apolyton By accident actually, I searched at google and on top of the list was apolyton!
I hope to play an active role, as citizen only though, because I feel very tiny between all these great civ players. I play at regent/monarch myself, and completed my first multiplayer game yesterday. (I won )
Let's show them who's best,
GO APOLYTON

Thanks Plague Rat, I indeed hope to learn and share a lot of ideas here, that is why I joined.
And about that multiplayer victory, it wasn't that impressive. 3 civs, tiny map, civ specific abilties off.(wasn't my idea) Those other two guys started fighting, one used a very tihgtly packed build, with only 5 cities. I used a more traditional spread empire, and soon took the lead in points. The tightly packed guy asked me for help and I joined in with 10 horsemen (For the first time I built chariots and upgraded them, strtegy I read here , it really works!) We then crushed Carthage but I was far bigger and after a tough fight between my horsemen and his swordsmen I managed to win.
Let's hope our game will proceed just like this one, we will be the laughing third

Hi and welcome back MWIA.
What are you researching down in NZ? Is it cheap to live there, nice food, girls, etc.? |
Gracias Plaguey. I am doing my PhD in Materials Physics.

WHICH university? We may be tiny, but we have more than one uni!
Cheap to live? You bet it is, and the Euro is worth 3 of our dollars, too. Food is good, as a lot of it is grown here. GE is something the country as a whole does not yet support, so organic is rather big here too. Girls? Yeah, you won't find me complaining. We're pretty active as a nation with sports and outdoor activities (likely the only things a given foreigner knows about NZ), and, so I'm told, really friendly. My uni keeps going on about us having "world-class" education, but who knows how objective THAT is? Racially we are very mixed, with the indigenous Maori populace numbering in the tens of percent, with strong groups from all ethnicities here, especially Pacific Islanders and SE Asians. We pretty much are all Kiwis.
Uh, what else? I don't really know how much of an issue this is in Europe, but there is no class system here. Richer and poorer for sure, but no rigid social structures like that - you can be born on the benefit and end up a top lawyer/politican/scientist given the option with government assistance or scholarships and there would be naught but respect for it.
Why do I always end up selling NZ in these posts?

MWIA - great post. I think NZ and Canada have a lot in common, which makes them both fabulous countries to live in.
This was confirmed by the recent international poll (December?) which confirmed IIRC that Canadians were the citizens most satisfied with their country. Not sure where NZ came in. Probably fairly high.
In Civ3 terms, we have lots of space and luxury resources. Mountains, tundra to the north, no dessert, lots of rivers, and lots of grassland, plains, and forest tiles. A few highly productive cities with happy citizens. And a very sub-par military.

BetaHound, as a former British Columbian (that is the western-most province, for all the non-Canucks), I must correct you on one thing - there is desert land in the interior of BC. In fact, BC is one of the most geographically diverse parts of the world with rain forest, plains, desert, mountains, rivers, coast, and tundra. And for resources: old growth forest, fish, whales, several types of mining, game hunting.

Great posts, folks! It's a good way to describe a country...
Ok, let me try:
Well, what I can say about Brazil...
We're religious and commercial, likely. LOTS of rainforests, bonus resources, flood plains, grasslands, rivers and more rivers, strategic resources, gold, luxuries, thousands of coastal tiles, mixed climate, mixed nationalities, girls in every shape, tone of skin... And we're in the Carnival right now ("We Love Everybody Day" in all cities). No clothes... You can say, Culture here is huge!
What's the problem, so?
Well, the Barbarians are rampaging (are you reading the news about us? )... The country is too big, and we have an endemic problem with corruption here (but the gold goes to Suiss ). We've made a "palace jump" already, no Forbidden Palace yet.... Oh, yes, a crappy military. No gold for troops, no techs to upgrade units... The luxury slider is down to zero, and the science slider goes in the same way. Almost all gold were going to corruption. We changed the Government just now, lets see if the corruption decreases...
Oh, well... With time, we can fix this, I hope.
