Since he wasn't PM at the time, I doubt it matters. Maggie, however, was tossed out on her arse after the Poll Tax fiasco.

December, IIRC. Congress gave Bush the authority to use force against Iraq when he deems it fit.

And to the ignoring democracy guys. The whole point of a democratic republic is for the people elect representatives who make good decisions based on their beliefs, not the poll numbers at that second in time.

Yay. Britain gets to take part in the destruction of Iraqs infrastruture (and the consequent deaths that will follow the collapse).

But I suppose Britain is pretty used to doing that

The spirit of the democratic system is a government that (get this!!!) SERVES THE PEOPLE.

When the government defies the people, it does not serve them.

Yeah, I agree.

In other news, the Union Jack was waved in front of Queen and Prince Bushs White House today celebrating the vote in the house of commons.

And the spirit of a Democratic REPUBLIC is that the government does not allow the mob of true democracy to trample over the rights of the minority.

In some cases it is best for the elected representatives to defy the people (such as the Civil Rights Acts and Amendments in the US, passed by representatives over great odds from the 'people'... we felt it in the next election)

A republic does not pander to the basest fears of a fleeting statistical component, but serves the whole.

We (USofA and Britain) got involved in this quagmire 12 years ago for the very best of reasons. We should not turn our backs and walk away just because finishing the job is unpleasant and even costly.

All those who whine about patliament not representing their views need to think aboy the death penalty.

The majority of people in the UK support the restoration of the death penalty. However parliament refuses to intorduce it.

The majority of the anti war protestors would be anti-death penalty(in the UK) and they would agree with parliament not intorducing it because it would be pandering to the masses.

Why now then is parlaiment suddenly undemocratic

It's actually a brilliant cost saving measure. Rather than use up to date voter lists which cost millions to keep current, just photocopy the old ones!

In a vote on a possible war last month, 122 Labor lawmakers voted against the government -- the biggest revolt since Labour came to power in 1997.

Opposition support
Iain Duncan Smith, leader of the main opposition Conservative Party, said he would back the government line because it was "in the British interest."

Blair suffered early setbacks prior to Tuesday's session with the resignation Monday of senior Cabinet minister Robin Cook, from his post as leader of the House of Commons.

Cook, a former British foreign secretary, told a packed parliament he could not support a war without international agreement or domestic support. (Cook speech)

Lord Hunt, a junior health minister in the House of Lords, the upper chamber, and Home Office Minister John Denham announced their resignations Tuesday.

Duncan Smith suffered three resignations from his front bench, including shadow environment minister Jonathan Sayeed, shadow home affairs minister Humfrey Malins, and shadow health minister John Baron.

Damn! I wish Canada had a parliament like that. Opposition supporting the PM because they thought he was right, not just nay saying to grab headlines. Resignations on both sides of the isle. MPs voting on principle and telling their leaders to stuff it. It would be glorious!

*sniff*

Maybe, some day...
