1) Madonna's a moron, except in the self-promotion game. The "self-censorship" turned out to be a better PR machine that the video would have been.

2) The US (and Brits) send 18 year olds into the field. The US sends troops of both genders, although females are limited to combat support services roles, which is a moot point when you take a wrong turn or get ambushed in a supposedly safe area. She shouldn't get undue attention because she's young and cute, it demeans her and everyone else young and not cute.

Most PR people I've dealth with take the view that any publicity is good publicity. Madonna gets to play it both ways, and gets her name in the news. Not bad for a washed up semi-talent, is it?

19 year olds of any gender are more "expendable" than 30 year olds who have kids to support. But the best option would of course be to not send them at all. What are they doing there anyway?

my experience:

legally under 21 year old US service members, aren't allowed to drink.

the reality is (for the most part) that as long as "the law" doesn't catch them, their superiors don't care.

I figured that would be the case, but I do just find it strange a country can send its young men across the worls to shoot people, but says they are breaking the law by having a drink.

In the UK older people are far more likely to be caught drink driving. This is not to say that 18-21 don't kill themselves with alarming regularity on the roads, they do.

raising the drinking age to 21 had a huge impact on the number of alcohol related fatalities on the roads

that is the reason why it is so important
