Survey about creationism Support Apolyton, buy Call to Power 2

I'm doing a small survey about creationists. If you believe that God created stuff, please give a short answer to the following questions.

1. How old is the Universe?

2. How old is the Earth?

3. How old is life?

4. Was there a Flood? If there was, when?

5. Was there one Ice Age or more? When?

Thank you for your cooperation.

1. The universe is 6000 years old. Fossils were planted by Satan to confuse us.

2. The Earth is also 6000 years old. Read Genesis.

3. Life is 6000 years old too. Just a couple of days less.

4. The Flood happened when Noah was around.

5. None, just the flood which killed all life on this planet bar a few people and animals.

Of course it is worrying that otherwise intelligent people believe that.

Satan deleted it from Genesis, around the same time he invented other religious faiths. Like Judaism.

Since I believe that God 'created stuff', I will answer your questions. Also, I will try and answer them off the top of my head, rather than going to look things up, since it would be a pretty pointless exercise then. (I presume this is to asses the knowledge of those who believe God 'created stuff').

quote:

1. How old is the Universe?

12-15 billion years or so

quote:

2. How old is the Earth?

4-5 billion years or so (more?)

quote:

3. How old is life?

ermm... this is a hard one. Perhaps 3-4 billion years or so?

quote:

4. Was there a Flood? If there was, when?

There have been lots of floods. Do you mean a flood which encompased the entire Earth? I know sea levels have been higher in the past, but I wouldn't think the entire Earth was covered. So that probably makes my answer No. There may have been a flood as described in the bible covering all the civilized world - I would put that at maybe 18 thousand years ago (maybe as a result of the ice-age thaw).

quote:

5. Was there one Ice Age or more? When?

I am fairly sure that there will have been more than one ice age. I gather recent research has shown the last one was around AD 1400-1900. The traditional 'ice-age' to which I presume you are refering was about 20,000 years ago I think.

The Mediterranean Sea flooded the Black Sea about 7-8.000 years ago. Many believe this is the real-world event from which the flood story was born.

My suggestion for you is to go over to forums such as Newsmax where there a lot more rightwing nuts hangout. There are only a few Creationists here, Lincoln and Monkspider being two.

Hmm, Lincoln's most recent posts in the athiesm thread seemed to suggest he doesn't view the Old Testament as totally literal (his "spirit" comment).

I'm not a YEC, but I know several. I think Red answered the standard answers. I'm not sure about the ice age question. I'll find out on Sunday. What stunned me recently was finding out how prevalent the idea of the dinosaurs being on the ark is. The other stunning belief common to YEC is that prior to the flood, all creatures, including man, lions, tigers, T-Rex were vegetarian.

Jehovahs Witnesses believe a literal Bible but take the six days as being six creation periods of undefined length. The still believe the vegetarian thing though. It amazes me how many different interpretations there are of the same book by people who all claim it to be infallible.

There have been many "ice ages". It is caused by the general ebb and flow of sea lanes that shift how much warm air, and thus humidity, is blown into the artic circle causeing less or more ice to generate. Since the breaking of the continents there have been dozens of ice ages lasting very long times. The forming and melting of these ice formations naturally cause the level of the oceans to rise and fall and could have, thus, contributed to "the flood".

The Big Chill

And yes, it is what I believe.

1. Always existed... matter in our region of the universe, I can't remember off the top of my head, but I believe around 20 billion years old. I don't believe the entire universe was created by a Big Bang, but rather localized big bangs once super-black holes reach some sort of critical mass.

2. Around 4-5 billion

3. Again, I forget, around 2 billion years I think

4. Many floods. The Noah flood probably occurred near the end of the last Ice Age. IIRC, I saw some sort of theory that the Mediterranean was once much smaller, but an influx of water from the Gibralter area caused a major flood. I'm not sure though.

5. Lots of Ice Ages, cyclical phenomenon.

I tend to believe that the Universe has always existed. The idea of a sentient creator just doesn't make sense. Nobody knows what life is, what causes it, or what happens when we die. I don't think our souls are eternal. There's a beginning to life, and an end.
