	Is state pride stupid? Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

American states, specifically; but feel free to chime in about province-pride.

IMO, we're one country. I was born in Illinois, I live in Illinois, yet don't feel any inherent loyalty to Illinois. I don't fly the Illinois flag. And frankly, I think state pride is stupid. People from certain states, which I will not mention, take great pride in their state. Some even think their state is a different country. So... is state pride stupid?

Yeah, state pride, as well as national pride, imo, is stupid. I don't have a problem with it, i mean you can be proud of your nation or state if you really want to...but there's usually just as much bad that you can point out as there is good.

I don't fly the flag of California.
I wouldn't mind moving.
I would not die for my state.

but...

I feel that one should take pride in where they live. from their block to their planet and everything inbetween. I hype up California because I think it is a great place to live, with some minor political exceptions right now. (Davis suks).

You can think state pride is stupid, I think state loyalty is stupid, and pride in general can be deemed stupid.

The flag of Georgia looks stupid, and the amount of energy that the governor is putting into getting an unconstitutional flag approved is ridiculous.

Maybe if I were from Louisiana or somewhere cool like that I'd have said no to the poll. If I were from Utah, on the other hand, I wouldn't have answered the poll at all. Probably would have hanged myself years ago, from the despair of living in a state full of salt, prudes, and ugly national parks that contain no plant or animal life.
It all depends, really. What has your individual state done to be proud of?

Taking "pride" of the place you live in is essentially stupid, because you have done nothing to live in this place. The only situation where you can be "proud" of your place is when you have put a lot of effort in it to successfully make it better.

Being happy/content/discontent/anything of the place you live is a different matter. It is natural to like/dislike the place you live in, at whatever level, from your house to your planet.

I should further clarify what I mean. I'm not asking if its wrong to like, enjoy, or support where you live. I'm from the Chicago area, and I'm proud of it. But I don't wave a flag of Chicago, or Illinois. And I don't proclaim it to be better than anywhere else.

NYC is relevant to the rest of the world the same way a cockroach is relevant to my foot; at least, it should be. The whole city is carved out of one gigantic lump of dirt. All it has going for it is the statue of liberty, good Chinese food and those damned neverending broadway musicals. At least the rest of NY state is clean. I want a t-shirt that says, "I (symbol of a guy flipping the bird) NY." Gah.
Sorry, that city is just one of the topics that sets me off. I'm never going back there. Note that this isn't a flame. Flames are directed at people, not evil cities.
