The dual-valedictorian thing reminds me of what happened when I graduated high school. There were two kids who had higher GPAs than I did. I didn't know which one would be valedictorian and which would be salutatorian, and I didn't care. The important thing to me was that either way I wouldn't have to give a speech, which I was deathly afraid of.

Except I did. It turned out that the two ahead of me were tied, so they were named co-valedictorians and I was salutatorian. Making that speech was one of the most excruciating moments of my life.

My bet is that the father is the one who pushed the lawsuit. He probably wanted to go bragging about his kid.

Is being a valedictorian really worthless? I thought that being valedictorian can provide that extra little bit of leverage that makes the difference in getting into the best school or the best job after graduation.

Maybe it does make a difference in a person's starting salary in which case, the school board's decision could create an economic cost.

Then again, I could be wrong.

Look, as some have said, it's possible the girl had a point (though most of us seem to agree that we think it was a weak point). But even if she did... $2,500,000 in damages?

You're no doubt correct about the father (parents) pushing this. I can hardly imagine it going forward without their consent at the very least.

So maybe it's her Dad that deserves an asswhooping.

We all know that lawyers just pull numbers like $2.5 million out of a hat. The problem isn't what they ask for. It's the juries that award big mulla.

The more I think about it, the more I think the girl and her family were right to sue.

Imagine you're disabled, you work hard and get the top marks in school, then the principle says you don't deserve the full prize because you're disabled. That's discrimination plain and simple.

There's a principle at stake and courts exist to protect people from this type of discrimination.

I mean it is suppose to me the student with the best grades, and maybe she did, but if they factor in all her incompletes for those PE classes than she would be right out.

I say cane her because she is whiner, and than beat the living snot out of her parents for not teaching her how to be humble.

She wasn't discriminated against because she's got an immune system problem. She was granted special consideration for that problem which resulted in her ending up with the highest grades. The school's timing could have been better, but I think they need to figure out a way of getting PE out of the GPA calculations.

By that logic, if a school had a rule that only a white person could be valedictorian then any attempt to change the rule to allow a black person to win would be reverse discrimination against whites.

And by that logic, the rules for picking the valedictorian discriminates agaisnt people who aren't smart.

The principal's an idiot for changing the rules in a disciminatory manner just before graduation.

The school board members are idiots for allowing this to go to court. They should have simply overruled the principal. Instead, they waste taxpayers money by fighting a battle for no reason other than their pride.

Tingkai, do you know what discrimination is? Do you know what preferential treatment is? This is a case of preferential treatment. The school officials only saught to give everyone an equal opprotunity. And that's my point. P.E. should be taken out of the GPA calculations, and the best person should win. This girl should not get a bonus for being disabled.

And yes... the rules for picking valedvictorian do discriminate against the people who don't meet the qualifications for the award. That's the point of the award. Or perhaps you think the valedvictorian should go to someone with a 2.0 GPA.

The girl is not a victim of discrimination. Further, EVEN IF she's got a point (which counsel for the defense does not concede), suing the school is a major overreaction. Additionally, EVEN IF one were to argue that suing isn't an overreaction (which counsel for the defense does not concede) demanding $2.5 million is just ludicrous.

Wrong. It's discrimination against the non-disabled to allow a disabled girl to take a class other than PE, then count that class towards being valedictorian. The best solution is to just disqualify anyone who cannot or will not take the same classes as everyone else - it's just not fair to non-disabled students, and the girl's disability is not their problem.

being valedictorian doesn't mean that much, depending on what school you go to.

really intellectually high-powered schools like the one victor and i graduated from, being a valedictorian doesn't mean much, because all of the magnets in our class had such high gpas that virtually every college was salivating over us--when only a few of us applied. i.e., many applied to mit, harvard, and such--but because of the high application rate, they couldn't take all of us...
same thing happens in the posh boarding schools of the northeast, like andover or exeter, where they put out so many qualified applicants that they bleed over into other schools, so valedictorian really means nothing.

mom would have loved for me to be valedictorian--asian driven parent or something like that. i, on the other hand, didn't give a flip--and i don't even have a healthy self-esteem. it's about priorities, and some people just have them a bit messed up.
