Turn 101, 550 BC Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

To be edited by the leaders of the Scholia.

Status:

- 174 gold, +137gpt

Check this and every turn to see if we lost some war unweariness due to the killing of troops within cultural borders and therefore must readjust the lux slider.

Urgent questions:

Is there land to the SW?

Military:
- Pound Vox with cats and see what else needs doing.
- Take back Arashi 9?

Economy:

TBD

(during build queue)
- Short rush Medieval Infantry in Arashi
- Anything else?

Diplomacy:

- Deal with ND postponed (due to bureaucracy, we are told).

Thread library:
- Standing orders for workers (Orders last revised April 5.)

Pre-turn issues: We have 170 gold, and it's going to cost 80 to short-rush a medieval infantry in Arashi. My inclination is to do that short-rush, use another 20 to upgrade a sword to a medieval infantry in the Hurricane area, and otherwise save our gold and see what looks like the best use for it in future turns.

Combat: My thoughts are:

Western Theater:

1) Move all six cats to Arashi and pound Arashi 9 until either we run out of either cats or viable targets. If any cats are left, we hit the main stack.

2) Hit Arashi 9 with our two veteran medieval infantry, following up with regulars if Vox gets lucky and wins one or both combats.

3) Plant pikes on Arashi 9 and dare Vox to go through them. For the moment, we don't need to worry about defending Tempest.

Eastern Theater:

1) Recall our vet swordsman at Sandstorm 6 for upgrade, replacing him with our new pikeman.

2) Move our recently built medieval infantry at EotS 6 into Sandstorm. Next turn, he can join our forces in the Arashi theater unless developments in the Sandstorm area call for some other action.

I'm planning to wait until we've handled any build-phase tweaks to send out the save, just to avoid all risk of someone's getting ahead of things. So if you have any thoughts on what to rush that differ from mine, now's the time to share them.

I wouldn't be in too big a hurry to move pikes to Arashi 9.

Counting pips, I see 2 additional units on the now completed road 8 8 of Arashi. That, and D'ville is one turn away from Monsoon 6 and Arashi 8 now. There could well be a pile of immortals ready to crash as a second wave.

I would prefer to use the cats on unfortified immortals and kill as many of them as possible this turn. I think.

If we go after the unfortified ones, we'll probably face about three with three hit points left and the rest with two hit points left. I'm not overly thrilled with the odds doing that; they're in our favor, but not by an especially big margin. (As I recall, we'll have two vet medieval infantry and four regulars.) In contrast, on Arashi 9, we would presumably be hitting 1hp and 2hp units this turn, and worst case, we'd pull back from Arashi 9 next turn but still be able to attack the big stack before it gets a chance to move.

We can look at the situation more closely once we get into the turn proper.

Build phase sounds fine.

I agree with Nathan: fire cats at A9, take A9, stick 2-3 pikes up there.

If we go after Arashi 9, rushing a cat in Monsoon could fit in nicely. The cat could move 6-2 and use its third move to hit Arashi 9 without leaving it vulnerable to counterattack. If we don't go after Arashi 9 this turn, I'm a bit more skeptical since it couldn't attack until the following turn. Under those conditions, we'd have more flexibility saving our gold until next turn, although we'd lose a cat shot at (probably) retreating troops in exchange for that flexibility.

By my count, we'll have nine pikes in the area, so we could plant four on Arashi 9 and still have five in Arashi. Or five on Arashi 9 and count on medieval infantry to defend Arashi if Vox gets anything past the first four (with their six supporting cats).

I'm going to vote in support of Arashi9... BUT, let's take it bit by bit, and see how the Cat bombards go. The only uncertainty is the rush-Cat from Monsoon... I say we go for it.

We will want to leave one Pike in Tempest... all the others can head for Arashi9, leaving the Pikes in Arashi true-fortified.

On the eastern front, I just think it important to have six units on each mountain... balanced of course, and with as much true-fortifying as possible.

Okay, I'll go ahead and rush the cat in Monsoon. We can use the Arashi cats until either we're one cat hit away from getting the Arashi 9 units down to one hit point each or we've had such horrible luck that we give up on the plan to take Arashi 9 (in which case we have the option of sending the new cat all the way to Arashi instead).

Good.

Do we really need to redline the units on A9? I'd be happy with 2 hps left... I do this often: bombard to 2 hp, try to kill, if a loss and an enemy promotion then bombard more, rinse and repeat.

Vox now has two vet and one regular immortals and one vet and one regular swordsman at Arashi 6-9. No surprises elsewhere on the map. By the way, I missed a pike: our pike from EotS last turn gives us a tenth that can reach the Arashi/Arashi 9 area.

So we get 7 cat shots total, right?

Let's fire until we're out of shots or the units are redlined (the former is more likely, I'd think. I'd rather make absolutely sure our units win. The whole point of having bombard units is to reduce casualties. Time is on our side w/respect to the troops in our territory. They can't heal. If we take A9, they can't retreat. The only thing they could do is charge heavily fortified positions. If they stand pat, we get 7 more shots at 'em next turn.

If we get the A9 units down to one hit point, odds are good that one of our attackers will escape damage and be able to attack at full strength again next turn if we feel the need. That, plus the reduced risk of actually losing a unit, make me inclined to get them down to one hit point if possible - especially since they're fortified.
