Vijay and Annika Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

ESPN

quote:
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Vijay Singh says Annika Sorenstam has no business playing in the Colonial next week and "I hope she misses the cut." On the odd chance he gets paired with her, he'll withdraw.

"Why? Because she doesn't belong out here," Singh said after his runner-up finish in the Wachovia Championship. "If I'm drawn with her, which I won't be, I won't play."

His comments were the strongest yet about Sorenstam's decision to accept a sponsor's exemption to play in the Colonial.
Nick Price, the defending champion at Colonial, has said Sorenstam's presence "reeks of publicity." He thinks she ought to qualify if she wants to prove herself at the highest level.

Scott Hoch, who once played with Sorenstam in a mixed-team tournament, said he wants to see her play well so people will realize "how much separation there is between us and the ladies' tour."

Singh held nothing back in an interview with The Associated Press as he left the locker room at Quail Hollow late Sunday afternoon, saying the 32-year-old Swede should stick to her own tour.

"What is she going to prove by playing? It's ridiculous," said Singh, a two-time major champion who is No. 7 in the world ranking. "She's the best woman golfer in the world, and I want to emphasize 'woman.' We have our tour for men, and they have their tour. She's taking a spot from someone in the field."

Singh speaks from experience.

In 1998, he played in an unofficial event called the "Super Tour" that matched the scorecards of nine professionals after playing 18 holes a day in four Asian cities. Laura Davies was invited to play, and finished 39 strokes behind Singh.

Vijay's right, of course, but it's a good thing for him he's Fijian, or he'd be demonized like John Rocker.

The PGA is for the best players in the world. If she beats just one player, she will have proved that she deserved to be there.

I heard on TV this morning that Tiger Woods is bailing out from a planned duel vs Annika Sörenstam. He's explanation was that he needs rest to heal an injury. Or he will not risk the embarrassment of losing to a lady?

A bad decision on his part. He was "scheduled" to play in this one. But I can understand... anybody that finishes behind her is not going to be very happy

I think Annika is a great player, but there is no way she would beat Tiger (off the same tees on a championship course) unless he had restrictions on the number of limbs he could use.

I think she will struggle in the tournament. If she is a big hitter for a woman, she will be hitting it 260-270. Men with driving that short really struggle on tour, so she will too. But she could have a good day with the putter and get round in even or slightly better and make the cut. Hence beating 50-60 men. But she is going to have to play her best to do so. IF she has an off day, she will be at the bottom of the field, although she still might beat someone (does Ian Baker Finch still play !!)

Sponsors of tour events are allowed a certain amount of invitations to otherwise non-exempt players. They often use these for local amateurs, international players or past greats, to generate increased ticket sales.

The fact that she doesn't finish last will not be justification of her being there, on a given day there are hundreds (and probally) thousands of golfers out there who would'nt finish last in a PGA tournament.

Tired of ads?

1. The reason for the womens tour is (I presume) that women get a chance to win something, right?

2. If she wants to play with the men, why stop her. I mean, if she's bad, no money for her. If she's good, why the hell stop her. But then we dont need a womens tour, right?

Btw.... golf

And it will generate media and fan interest, so why the heck not. My daughter hopes she does well. I doubt she will make the cut, but it would be fun. Especially if she does real well and VJ does bad enough that they get matched on Saturday so he has to withdraw

Got spare money?

Hmmmm, VJ bowing to a little public pressure. In todays tribune.

Now Vijay sings tune of apology

May 14, 2003

Vijay Singh said Tuesday he was sorry if his comment about Annika Sorenstam playing on the PGA Tour came across as a personal attack.

On Sunday, Singh said, "I hope she misses the cut" at the Colonial next week in Ft. Worth.

But after a practice round Tuesday for this week's Byron Nelson Classic in Irving, Texas, he said: "If it was an attack on Annika at all, I would like to apologize to her. It came out the wrong way."

Singh attempted to cast his remarks in a different light.

"I actually said if I miss the cut, I'd rather she miss the cut as well," he said. "I hope she missed the cut because I don't want to have a woman beat me."

On Tuesday, Singh said he would play with Sorenstam if both made the cut and were paired in the weekend rounds. But he said something would be wrong if the two were paired for the first two rounds because, as a past champion, he is drawn from a different pool.

"I was saying my category was different," Singh said. "If I was put with her, it means I wasn't given the right attention for my category."

Asked if he spoke for a majority of tour players, Singh said, "I speak for myself."

IMHO, professional sports leagues shouldn't be restricted to men. The best players should be allowed to play. But let's be honest here. Annika didn't qualify for the pro tour. She used her influence to get her on it. I agree with Tiger Woods that she should try and get on it legitmately. Let's also be honest here. If a woman could hit 70 home runs and bat .300; George Steinbrenner would sign her to play for the Yankees. It's not about sex, it's about skill.

While I agree with almost everything you said, I don't think she used her infuence to get on, she was influenced to do it. And while I too think she should have had to qualify like the rest of the men, I don't really have a problem of her using a sponser exception. They were created to help do things to raise interest for the media and at the gate. One couldn't dissagree that this isn't adding interest at both.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

My opinion about her using her influence (its just my opinion BTW) is based upon what I've seen in the media. It's not very credible, but when presented with a variety of sources, seems like the reasonable conclusion. And if she gets clobbered, this will set back attempts for such ventures in the future.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

If she gets clobbered, less tournaments will be willing to waste a sponsers excemption on a woman, and they'll then have to quallify like everyone else.

So, I don't see a problem.

Here's a tournament that without Tiger would barely be mentioned in the papers or on the radio. Now it will be covered and attended similar to a major. Cheezy, but slick.
