I can see charges 1 and 3 sticking, but charge 2, feeding a gator? Is that a criminal offence

But it leaves one burning question...does cat taste good.

Just remember, if cats were bigger, they'd eat us

No, anymore than the difference between manslaughter and murder is a technicality. The crime of murder simply does not apply to non-humans, as long as they have not been accepted as members with rights of the community.

That reminds me of a man who went to court for killing an endangered bald eagle.

Judge: Why did you kill the eagle sir?

Defendant: I am deeply sorry your honor but I was hungry so I cooked him and ate him.

Judge: Well that will be a $500. fine. By the way, I am curious; what does a bald eagle taste like?

Defendant: It tastes kind of like a Condor but probably is more similar to a spotted owl...

Listen now folks, if you're going to sentence him to a prison, you might as well execute him -- his life is ruined after the sentence and he won't enjoy his life anyway -- suffering from eternal guilt and bitterness.

Will commit suicide or start using drugs during the first 6 months, I'd say. Sending him into prison would be pure hypocricy, considering the living conditions in US prisons.

I'm not saying he shouldn't be punished. Just, don't treat him like a psycho or a criminal. No one will benefit from that.
Make him work at an animal shelter or something and he'll learn not to go around and feed pets to aligators

I would agree with this statement, but the article said he beat up the cat before feeding it. I probably would have chucked mice, rabbits and stuff to gator myself if I was little kid in florida to see the gator "hunt" something. But beating up a cat was kinda unnecessary.

He also tried to lie so I dont buy into the whole "he felt guilty and tried to undo it as soon as he threw in the cat".

He needs severe punishment, but preferrably in a way that doesnt ruin his life. over a ****ing cat people!

Yes, some people do need a sense of proportion here. This isn't murder because it is a cat. He should get some community service and counseling. No more.

Where is this "an innocent curious boy" arguement coming from? I mean, its pretty obvious what happens when you feed a cat to an alligator....IT DIES!!!

What it says, far more eloquently than I am able, is that as long as people are cruel, murderous and unfeeling to animals they will be the same to other humans. Just as ertain human beings were seen inferior and therefore "fair game" (a good chunk of my relatives some two and three generations back were exterminated that way), people now say "it's just a cat".

If any distinction should be made, it is that the kid has the power of reason that should enable him to see what is right and what is wrong. Cats and other animals do not have this power, yet somehow they are far, far less prone to cause suffering and death just for the bloody sake of it.

You sir don't know your cats. There is nothing many cats enjoy more than capturing a small animal and slowly tearing apart. Not to eat, just for the entertainment.

I agree with those who think he should get some community service / fine / counseling. I was as violent as many when I was this kids age, with access to weapons and explosives and all sorts of animals. I hunted and fished and killed vermin and varmints, but I never for a second ever thought of killing someone's pet. That is really profoundly mean-spirited.
