His name alone is a provocation.

He made fun with the laws of the Church already published.
quote:

So, more than one husband is OK. Guess the girls will like that.

He has confessed publicly that he deserved to be burned at the stake.
quote:

You do realize that I expect to be burned at the stake at least several times now, don't you?

GodKing is a perfect example of heresy by a man proud to be heretical.
The evil influence of such a demoniac guy on the Spanish people cannot be overestimated. It has to be ended as soon as possible.
I therefore respectfully suggest that the GodKing case be the first considered by the Holly Inquisition when the necessary laws will have been promulgated.

You mean we haven't yet got an Inquisition organized? Tut, tut... if I had been elected Pope, we would have had one long ago, and GodKing would be ashes in the wind.

Sure. We need some drama...

I've already seen him lurking about hunting walruses and tending sheep. I'm afraid that, despite his many excellent qualities, he is a heretic, and thus I fear the Devil must be using him. The trial, Don Torquemada, must be held in all fairness. There is more evidence to be gathered, I've seen it. Look around. If Senor GodKing...I can barely say his heretical name...is truly what you say, than I am afraid the Most Holy Inquistion must take whatever actions it can to protect the Church from such degrading influences.

*cough* Where are the laws? I've been waiting for them for...years!

Trials made by the Inquisition, auspiciously inspired by the Holly Church, will certainly be different from any secular trial. As a matter of fact, the difficulty will not be to establish the culpability, to judge and to have the sentence executed. It will not be to demonstrate at each step the greatest fairness (which will be held in its most perfect state in the custody of the Holly Church). It will be to bring the culprit to repentance. We want to save his soul; we must never forget this fundamental obligation. And the final difficulty will be to make sure that this repentance is sincere, otherwise we would have accomplish nothing.

If Saint Catbert and Saint Dogbert have any helpful idea on these delicate matters, I would gratefully receive them, as well as all those of our wise Cardinals.

Sts. Catbert and Dogbert? I suppose through prayers they may guide you, but as saints they are, physically, well, dead. So, perhaps you may ask instead for the assistance of several very holy and faithful Cardinals. I mean, of course, Cardinal Biggles and Cardinal Fang.

And I fully agree with your wise statements, Senor Torquemada. The soul must be saved.

If GodKing is a heretic, then I suppose I'm a condiment maker?

I ask the religious leaders of Spain to spend their time more wisely than accusing innocent people.

How many of our cities have Temples? Why isn't the church campaigning for more? Is the church content to let the rich people of Spain relish their luxuries, thereby raising the average happiness, while the poor and truly unhappy are ignored?

I had the impression that many religious men were wise men or at least in close connection to wise men. Do you have an explanation as to why Spain is flailing, scientifically? Perhaps too much time is spent deciding who shall be Pope and searching for heretics...

Suffering from ads?

Perhaps you would care to note, Master Dejon, that the Church isn't particularly in favor of a violent Inquisition. I ask for it moderately in order to protect the Church. I do not ask for burnings or torture. I ask for, as Torquemada says, the conversion of these poor souls. I ask that they not speak their heresies for the wrongs they do against future generations who may see their falsehoods for truths. The Pope has no taste for the Inquisition at all. Who asks for violent Inquisition?

As for science, what point have you? I dare say, none. Are the men of the Church supposed to be scientists, now? We hold no official positions in the government, we do not decide how things are run. Why launch such words at us? Do you not know what you say? Is it the fault of the Pope that the Chinese have not given us the Feudalism we ask for? Is it the fault of the Pope that there is much spending and little research? Why, then, do you suggest that it is?

I ask the Pope to drop charges against Senor GodKing. I have reason to suspect that he is alone in his "wanderings" and is doing no harm to anyone. His children are wise, they know that he is misguided. Let us but pray for his soul, and the souls of all those who live in Spain.

And besides, the mustard you make isn't bad at all!

Disrespecting the Church is very ... um, disrespectful.

Blasphemous, perhaps. Blasphemy is a crime in Spain, and I believe this may be a good time to make something very clear:

There is one faith, and one church in Spain. The role of the church and the leadership of the church are taken very seriously by the King. If the Church wishes to punish those who break the laws and traditions of our faith, or those who scoff and mock the faith, the King will not stand in the way, nor will I condone such behavior.

Señor Dejon, I think we have to get something straight.

The Church is encouraging philosophy and discussion. It is one of the most important points of the Church's policy.

The Abbey of St. Benedictus was not only founded as a place of devotion, but also a place of discussion about the Church and the christian faith.

It seems however that the people of Spain are concerned with other issues than with philosophy and theology because currently the Abbey has only two members: padre Riqui de la Civ and padre Colomba Calamari. The Church cannot be accused for declined interest for philosophy and theology of the people of Spain.

The fact that the cardinals and other wise men of the Chuch do not produce any big philosophical works is because they are currently more concerned with setting up the institutions of the Church, which are essential to the development and spreading of the christian faith.
In this early stage we cannot concentrate on everyting at the same time.

I hope that this answer satisfies you.

Sincerely,

Pope Aidun I

As For the trial against señor GodKing:

The Law on the Inquisition is now officially published.

Señor GodKing,

How sad that you have been arrested and accused of heressy, it is but a decision of the Head of the Inquisition, and I will not intervene in the process until the end of the trial or something terrible must happen before that moment.
I hereby inform you that you have the right to defend yourself as described in the Law on the Inquisition.
If señor Torquemada finally concludes that you are guilty, you have the right to beg me for mercy and I shall decide what to do.
I hope you will show repentance.

2. Concerning future cases, you will have to find a police officer, since I can no longer held such a low position.

Put an end to popups!

Senor Torquemada,

Am I to gather from your above statements that you are resigning your commission as head of the Most Holy Inquisition? If so, the Church bemoans your grievous loss and begs you to reconsider. A more vigilant and worthy son of the Church is impossible to find. I beg you, do not abandon your post, at this hour you are most needed. What say you, friend Watcher?
--

Your Holiness,

This trial doth paineth me, and I had hoped that I, a humble servant of the Church, would not be called to be made Judge, for in times of old the GodKings (yeah, I know…it’s hard to say that blasphemous name) and the Calamarquists were on very good terms. But I will not shrink away from my duty if this is what you ask. I pray God that Senor GodKing can prove that he was misguided all along and back up his claims. I am confident that he will come to know God as a member of the Church and repent of his sins.
--

(bang)

Very well, I have said what I have said. Let the trial of Senor GodKing commence.

Senor GodKing...

You are accused of foul heresy against the Most Holy Catholic Church, your Mother, and of blasphemy against the Name of God. These are very serious offenses before God and man, as Canon Law and the Togian Law both state. How, then, do you plead?

The evidence is before you, Senor GodKing. You have given yourself a name that appears to us to be obvious proof of your blasphemy. You have openly flaunted the Church's authority, and you have invaded the Curia, running around like that famous comedian Grouchius Marxius. Have you no shame?

I ask again, how do you plead?

(Bailiff! Restrain him! He is foaming again!)

Senor GodKing, will you or will you not give the Inquisition a response? You see that this is a fair trial. We wish to hear out your evidence and pass wise judgment upon you. Do you not wish to assist us in clearing your name?

(Bailiff! Please! My shirt!)

Senor GodKing...we, I fear, have…ways of issuing a response from you that we do not wish to use unless we have no other choice. Please do not force us to do this. Please tell us how you plead and give us the evidence on your behalf, or I am afraid we might have to take desperate measures...

(nods to Cardinals Biggles and Fang)

For instance, Senor GodKing...

...the Comfy Chair...

(No! Not the Comfy Chair!)

Then, again I ask it. How do you plead?

Señor Torquemada,

I fear we have misunderstood each other a bit. I appreciate your efforts as Head of Inquisition, but I have thought about the system we were using: a prosecuter who is judge at the same time. This is not good because it is biased.

I apologise for the way I formulated the edict, it was unclear and although I didn't mean to insult you, you interpreted my words as such, which is my fault.

I have restricted your duties now because you were already collecting evidence. I am responsible for this too, I should have included articles about the new procedure in the Law on the Inquisition.
The reason why I have appointed Cardinal Calamari as interim judge is because I needed someone who was not yet biased because he prosecuted already and of who I knew he was capable to do the job.

My intention was to appoint you as judge instead of prosecuter and have someone else as prosecuter. That is what I meant with "After this trial I will officially appoint a new judge who will remain judge until his death."

I hope I have explained myslef enough by this. Again my apologies for the unhandy way I treated you.

With kindest regards,

Pope Aidun I
