There are many ways to counter US "imperialism". The US is far from a hegemonial position.
Now with 200k troops tied down in Iraq, how would for example a war against Iran work? Iran is at least 5 times stronger than Iraq on defense spending, a good deal more considering it didn't suffer from sanctions. Should the "hegemon" occupy Iran, what would be left of the hegemon's might in other corners of the world? Probably not even enough to overrun the usual third world country.
And Macchiavelli would laugh his ass off at the dilettants in the White House.

That's been a problem with the Dems for decades. They haven't been able to shed their tax and spend whiny image, so no real leaders have emerged, and just like you have the far right types in the Republican party subverting moderates, you have the far left types in the Democratic party doing the same.

In 18 months, I'd rate it "probable" but certainly not "pretty certain."

Who's "we?" Enough of the world is dependent enough, (and Burkina Faso would be dependent on capital import if it could attract any), and the US gets massive capital import because those investments are attractive (and capital flows are often reversing merchandise flows). If the US economy really tanks (as opposed to just drags for a while) it'll have a hell of a lot bigger ripple effect around the world than if Russia's or France's economies tank.
I think your (Euro) leaders will need genetic engineering to get some balls. The whole (at least the way its spun in the US) "trying to repair relationships with the US" bit is nauseating. If someone is going to take a stand, they should take a stand.

Of course, but if the prisoners don't realize they can overpower the jailer, or they don't have the balls to, then the jailer maintains control. Reality doesn't count. It's what everyone perceives to be real that counts.

The real game isn't to make war in Iran. It's to make noise about making war in Iran, so that people will be distracted from looking at other things to closely.
