EU peacekeepers soon in the DR of Congo Remove this text

I hope we hadn´t already a thread about it.....

Ok, here´s a BBC article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/2962948.stm

Question for the military experts: what can 1400 soldiers do to stabilize an instable region full of rivalizing militias?

Politically it is interesting because for the first time, the EU acts militarily on its own (some operations on the Balkan are now also under EU control, but they started as NATO ops). Could be a model for further operations.

Full PM-box? Change here!

I don't think they're intended to stabilise the entire region; they're just there to provide a presence of some kind and make the town safer.

What I'm more interested in is how long it will take someone to needlessly criticise this. I'm guessing 6 minutes.

Not very much.

Just call it Macedonia.

Suffering from ads?

They'll only intervene in Bunia. Nobody even thinks of trying to pacify the whole country with such a mission.

Does the UN mandate the use of force by the mission? It would be pretty darn shitty if we'd end up with another Bosnia or Rwanda.

Yes, not the whole country, but I thought the Ituri region (maybe I´m wrong here)

AFAIK yes, I read somewhere else there will also be additional UN (African) peacekeepers (ca. 1000?)

I bet an American jumps in soon. The European Union is a stronghold for neo-imperialism! How dare you try to impose your Euro-centric values on the poor, oppressed and war-torn peoples of Africa?!

Here's the press release.

"1. Authorizes the deployment until 1 September 2003 of an Interim Emergency Multinational Force in Bunia in close coordination with MONUC, in particular its contingent currently deployed in the town, to contribute to the stabilization of the security conditions and the improvement of the humanitarian situation in Bunia, to ensure the protection of the airport, the internally displaced persons in the camps in Bunia and, if the situation requires it, to contribute to the safety of the civilian population, United Nations personnel and the humanitarian presence in the town;"

"“4. Authorizes the Member States participating in the Interim Emergency Multinational Force in Bunia to take all necessary measures to fulfil its mandate;"

1400.
As planned, a way too small force. They'll be probably able to secure a town or to protect humanitarian food, but they have no chance to stabilize the country

We need 250,000 troops but there's only the US and Britain who can do that, and we have the war on terrorism to fight.

Thx colon, didn´t know that.

But it seems strange just to sit in the town - I mean those militias will probably be a bit flexible, and kill civilians at other locations - what then?

Read my previous post. I think the basic idea is to create a safe haven in the area, which could be very valuable to refugees and also in order to ship humanitarian aid into the region.
