comunist (IU - United Left). However, all comunist that live here (in other part of Spain, Andalucia) hates that IU is involved in such a goverment. |
It is a common question why IU doesn't order their people at the basque country to stop their support. They really look like two completely different parties!

Please allow me to add some information here. The liberals (here they are called liberals but if I am right they are called libertarians in the US, despite American libertarians are much more radical than European liberals) also form part of the PP. Conservatives usually are the ones who control the PP, but liberals have also some to say, specially in the economy, where they have a lot to say.

Well, I've just read the thread, and I'm on Fez' and Oliver's side on this one.
Don't get me wrong : I oppose the use of death squads or whatever the Gonzalez gov. has done. I know the Basque independantists were for long the symbol of resistance to Franco dictatorship. But today's independantists are widely different.
ETA gains support from the violent youth that would have joined neofascist organisations otherwise. The violent independantists try to instill fear in the hearts of the Basques, and they begin with the intelligentsia. A referendum on independance should not be trusted unless put under UN or EU surveillance, since the independantists would be likely to wage a terror campaign to have things their way.
Che, we are not talking about brave freedom fighters : the ETA have everything we loathe in fascism, and the Madrid government is infintely better in this regard.
Buck, we are not talking about an oppressed minority : the Spanish Basques enjoy a huge autonmy in comparison to any other national minority group in Europe, and they live in one of the most industrialized region of Spain. Heck, even the few Bretons who claim they have been 'colonized' by France are more right than Basque independantists.
There are valid 'independantist' parties in Pais Vasco, and they are in power right now. These parties want to get a wider autonomy or Basque independance through legal means. They are in power right now but might lose it in the future. Well, I have no problem either way, snce legal elections show the will of the people.
But the violent independantists, the ETA and their Batasuna lapdogs, want independance to get power for themselves, by establishing a semi maffiosi state where they'll be free to extort what they want from the citizens. These people have switched from 'freedom fighter' mode to become evil bastards using violence because of their utter lack of support.
The ETA is a terrorist organisation in every definition. It opposes the will of the Basque people. It should be crushed, for the more valid parties to give a valid image of the independantist movement.
