Hey TCO, I think the Germans pushed the British Romans into the Cornwall, Wales and Scotland. This is why English originally had no Latin components. It was purely German.
Also, the legend of King Arthur is about the British Romans taking a stand against the Germans. In fact, some believe that Arthur was a legion commander who somehow stayed in Britain when the legions withdrew to the continent.
Knowing this, it is somehow "quaint" that the English view Arthur as one of "their" legendary heroes, when he was the enemy. |
Against the Saxons to be more precise, which were a tribe of mixed germanic, slavic and celtic origins.
I´ve heard one day, that Artus could be in reality have been a nephew of Ambrosius and that Merlin (which also sometimes was called Merlinus ambrosius) could de facto have been Amrosius aurelianus.
But other sorces seem to claim that Merlin seemed to be Myrrdin, an Druid or Prophet or Bard which served as a councelor to Artus.
Of course, as the english Kings and Queens are all descendants of the Saxon House of Sachsen, Coburg and Gotha, you could be right in stating that Artus was the Enemy of todays ernglish Kings and that Artus mission seemed to have failed in the end

The Langue d'Oc?
Occitan is a romance language like Catalan, Italian or French, mostly in the south of France. French was originally limited to the north; the devide began when the south of Gaul was romanised sooner and more thoroughly, and was reinforced by germanic (frank) settlement in the north. There were also big cultural differences, eg in the legal system.
In the 13th century, the french monarchy enforced its claims in the south - the Catharian/Albigensian wars. Occitan gradually became a Patois.
As a language, it is closer to Catalan than to French or Italian (although there are similarities to northern italian dialects). It is spoken only in a few spanish villages IIRC and not in Italy; only in the Val d'Aosta the original dialect is a franko-provencal one, ie the tranistion zone between French and Occitan.
How it looks? Well, for medieval poetry:
Lanquand li jorn son lonc en mai
m'es bels douz chans d'auzels de loing
e quand me suis partitz de lai
remembra-m d'un'amor de loing
vauc de talan enbroncs e clis
si que chans ni flors d'albespis
no-m platz plus que l'inverns gelatz
Which would be in modern french:
Lorsque les jours sont longs en mai
M'est beau doux chant d'oiseaux de loin
Et quand je suis parti de là
Me souvenant d'amour de loin
Vais de désir front bas et clin* (* incliné)
Ainsi chants ni fleurs d'aubépine
Me plais(ent) plus que l'hiver(nale) gelée

Guys, calm down and don't mix the topics!
We can speak of Franco in another thread (we can speak of Franco related to the Basque Country, but don't start a topic on this, please), this one is for a very problematic thing: the basque goverment is somewhat don't fighting the terrorism of ETA, and for that reason people is dying, what is a horrible, horrible, horrible thing.
I don't undernstand why some persons thinks that supporting ETA is right. Seriously, ETA is nothing but a bunch of murderes who kill kid, men and woman without a tear. They should be jailed (in spain there is not death sentece!)
Stop bashing against Spain, please. This is serious bussines and I don't think you're taking it seriously!

I am sure that someone elaborated.. but how is it that the Basque people are opressed?
Are they not allowed to prosper or what? |
Basque people elect their own goverment, like all the others parts ("comunidades autonomas") of Spain. The Basque Country have such an autonomy that the Basque Goverment is even more responisble that the National Goverment of Basques' wellfare. The current Basque Goverment is a coaliction of Nationalist (both right-wing [PNV-PNB Nationalist Basque Party] and left-wing [EA, Eusko-Alkatasuna]) and comunist (IU - United Left). However, all comunist that live here (in other part of Spain, Andalucia) hates that IU is involved in such a goverment.
The other parties of the Basque Country with seats in the parlament are
- PP [Right-wing, conservative] : The party that is in the govern of Spain right now.
- PSOE-PSE [Socialist, left-wing]: The other big party of Spain.
- Batasuna [Illegalized - Independentist Party that directly supports ETA].
It's very important to know that there are independentist parties that are not illegalized: only Batasuna, for its bounds with ETA, is illegalized.

I was not speaking about you, Fez. Let's see: sometime I agree with you, many others time I don't agree with you, but this time you're in the right side: ETA is a thing we should stop. There are some differences between us: for instance, I firmly believe in legal ways (not death squadrons), I don't like Franco, etc.
I was speaking, for instance, about people who only want to flame you and don't take it seriously.

Just making my self clear. I think the legal ways including prision time would be the best option. I said death squads earlier but that is not legal and is not any better than what the terrorists do. Forgive me for saying that.

I think I see why the seperatists are getting desperate.. the seperatist parties are starting to lose their grips on power.
Is it true Aznar said he would even run in the Basque region as a Senator or something along those lines after his presidency is over?

Sadly I am sure that they are taking it seriously and that they say exactly what they think.

so there is no proper oppression but ETA still wants independance??? |
They not only want independence. They say that Spain oppreses them. They know it is a lie, but they also know that if they say it enought times some people abroad will believe it, provided the very few information about Spain that reaches the rest of the world
quote: What is the gain? Would they still want to stay within EU? |
The gain is clear. They win absolute power over all the institutions. That's for the ruling class. For the people it would be very different.
