Right back at ya, D.
Are you still at Buzzard? Why hasn't Ogre made a cameo yet?
|
Too busy drinking mead, stealing carrots, knocking pebbles down wells in monster infested mines, lighting off fireworks in tents, shaving my feet, you know, the usual completely unhobbit-like activities. Plus I'm so short it's hard to reach the keyboard, I can only get out the crates to stand on every so often.
Let's get together for some lembas, eh? Two or three loaves ought to be enough.

What are you TALKING ABOUT?!? I ate 4 by myself!
Well, I was wrong about the hobbit thing, huh? A wizard shows up exactly when he's supposed to. Whazzup, Gandalf?

On a slightly more serious note, do we have anytime frame on when the code will be released?

You realize of course about half the SLIC mods people were working on now are pointless. It would be far easier to directly implement them by adding source code.
So is it time to start making a list of the things to be fixed, reimplemented, and added?
In no particular order:
1. remove those hard coded limitations on the number of sprites and so forth
2. Fix the diplomacy model, so that all of the features work.
3. Reimplement the space features
4. Add strategic resources
5. Add colonies
6. allow shifting borders (border expansions ala Civ III)
7. Allow increased vision ranges for units on hills/mountains
8. fix the problem with city trading where you can have so many cities they bleed off the screen
9. add religion as a component to the game
10. ... And ...

YEAH!!
0. KILL A*. WORST PATHFINDING ALGORITHM EVER!
3. REIMPLEMENT SPACE!!
10. GUI support. REAL customisable gui features. What we had in there was at best, ad hoc, and at worst, straight up kludge (no offence, MrOgre - we were in a hurry, but the keyboard handling uberswitch was just EVIL.)
11. Rebalance to fight the infinite city sleeze.
12. Lemur settlers.
13. Lembas resource.

sure, provided that its efficient enough. Certain things you do want (or can only do) in the game engine though...

Oh, yeah. I seem to recall one of you lot saying "We bit off more than we could chew on that one."
I think Lemurs should take priority over this.

I didn't move back to Venice, I just never updated my account.
A* is the only pathing algorithm worth talking about. CTP2 does have some glitches, perhaps, but blaming it on A* isn't fair at all. The algorithm is well known and used in practically every game that needs to have pathing. Any problems are with the data being fed to it or bugs in the specific implementation.
The code for space isn't just turned off or anything simple like that, it's completely gone. Putting a second layer back in would be a major undertaking.
And the question you all really care about, I should have the code from Activision early next week. I just have to strip it and send it back, they'll slap a license agreement on it, maybe put it in a self extracting zip or something, have a coven of lawyers throw it in a cauldron full of chicken blood and subpoenas, let it boil until the full moon, and then finally turn their backs and let it escape.

I made a good part of the pathfinding in freeciv. That was also A*. Seemed like the obvious choice.
I wonder what license they will use. Is GPL too much to ask for?
Somebody mentioned that they needed ctp2 source to be able to see the source of a civ game. I suspect that the freeciv source is much cleaner and therefore a better candidate.
