	Going to Gaza. Advice? Increase the size of your Attachments

Hello nice people.

I'm going to the Gaza strip, Rafah specifically to do a follow up story on the death of journalist James Miller. I'm doing this follow up for a paper (well Scottish Media Group), and I'm going for 6 days. I also have to report the effect of 'the peace process' on the ground.

James Miller was shot in the neck by an Israel soldier, while he was approaching a tank, waving a white flag.

I was wondering if anybody had any advice on how to keep out of trouble/ or anything I need to do, apart from signingthe disclaimer about not suing if I'm shot by the IDF. Advice from any Israelis would be helpful

I'm leaving on the 7th of August.

Correction.

I'm being paid to go to the Gaza Strip

The report has to be good, since my jobs probably on the line (cutbacks, redundancies at work).

It's actually very quiet in Gaza these days, AFAIK.

my advice: whenever you go, approach the Israeli soldiers, and let them know you're there, so no misunderstanding would occur.

If **** hits the fan, DON'T stand among the palestinians. It's much safer on the soldier side, and the best would be not to be on either side, if possible.

Wear that "Press" bullet-proof vest.

Also, I'll be back in the country in the 10th, or so, If you'd like to, you can jump to Haifa, and we'll have a beer and discuss politics, and weather.

The best advice would be to make sure other Western journalists know you are there and at least one of them is with you at all times. The Israelis have been diliberately targetting jounalists for some time now (generally with rubber bullets, but you still don't want to be hit by one). The OT is the most dangerous place in the world to be a journalist, and the includes place where there are actual hot wars going on.

Other than that, Azazeel's advice is probably the best, though letting the soliders know you are a journalist is a double edged sword. DO NOT LET THEM KNOW WHY YOU ARE THERE.

Actually, letting them know he's a journalist is a GOOD thing. they might think he's an ISM member, and send him back to Scotland.

I saw the movie of the event someone was recording. The Israeli vehicles were far away, so it's not like he was 5 meters from a tank and he got shot. There was a lot of space and distance for misunderstandings, and it was dark.

I'm not saying he wasnt shot by Israelis, but the situation wasnt that simple.

Azazel: I think it's either something to do with the fact that alot of the freedom fighters are notorious gaylords. Or that the police/IDF enjoy 'perks' with prisoners. Neither is strictly true of course

Although when I was arrested in Genoa, 2001, the Italian police were pretty nasty. They made me -as well as another 10 protestors- strip naked and chucked us in a holding cell. Cunts
