Prisoners are seen as fair game for anything horrible. After all, they chose to committ a crime (ignoring the large numbers of people who are in prison who don't belong there).

one thing about curbing prison rape is that, not only is it morally the right thing to do, it's also the most practical thing to do

I suppose I'm inclined a bit of both - you could say its part of "the prison experience", but my side the recognises human rights says this isnt part of the package, its a violation, its unwarrented, and its a problem. Certainly the perpetrators should get longer sentences.

Unfortunatly, perhaps the most immoral thing I've ever thought, is that I'm very glad that my 19 year old class mate who drove drunk and killed my sister's 16 year old friend will be raped up the ass in prison (and according to stories, already has while he was held pending bail)

If prison rape was part of the sentencing guidelines that would be one thing, but its not, it’s just as awful as any other rape. The system simply doesn't function properly, and this is another symptom. When the state imprisons people it takes full responsibility for their safety, and it routinely fails in its duty. I have no problem with Borowitz or Leno trivializing it and making fun of rape in prisons, because it wouldn't be punch line fodder if it weren’t so common. If it were actually a rare occurrence then it would shock people; instead, we as a society are just desensitized to it. Who cares, they deserve it right?

And, what if it was your brother in prison for drunk driving. Yes, he deserves it, and he will do his time - but would you want for him to get raped?

Really, raping isn't what they are sentenced to. And, prison should isolate the criminals, also try to change them for the better... does rape do that?

Maybe,
aside from getting their time they haveto stay in Prison prolonged,
those People who rape their Inmates should be sent to another special Prison,
where you have got only Prisoners who at one time or the other actively raped their Inmates (i.e. not those people who just held him during the rape, but the people, who really got their Pleasure from the victim).

At least for a couple of those Rapists it should be a horrible Experience, as they will be turned from former Rapists to Victims themselves, as you can expect that also in this Prison some people will get picked to be raped

I can't imagine women get raped in prison- unless it's by a guard.

We have had a female inmate in my city get pregnant by a guard- but the sex was consensual. They forced every woman in the prison to get a pregnancy test.

Men are much more likely to get raped in prison. It's one of the reasons why I don't do illegal things . A small guy like me wouldn't fare well in prison.

i have never in my life heard anyone say its good that someone got raped in prison... can't imagine that... what are people here talking like half of america applauds prison rape?

and then i remembered when that gay guy in wyoming got killed, people were glad for the irony that the 'homophobic' murderers would be ass raped...

It's sorely tempting to wish that some prisoners would get raped while behind bars — child molesters come to mind, personally. Hey, what can I say? I'm human. That said, however, it's something that should be prevented. Like someone else on this thread said, we don't want them coming out of prison even more screwed up than when they went in. That does society no good.

Well, here is a perspective of a correctional officer.

It doesn't happen in my jail. It is all but impossible. We operate in a direct supervision evironment (where there is an officer always in direct contact all times) and the cells are all designed to be single occupancy cells. It is illegal for more than one inmate to be housed in our cells. Showers are all single stall, and in direct view of the officer (with toilet stall type doors). Additionally, there are cameras everywhere. In my opinon, my jail is ideal, but for one problem. It is state of the art in technology and design, which means its very expensive. And I am sure that making all this fuss about prison rape would be sure to attract the support of the people, that same support will fall apart completely once the people realize how much it would cost to solve the problem.

Speaking of "solving the problem", how would it be done? Higher more officers? Good luck! How many of you would want to have to go to work everyday and be surrounded by murders rapists and child molesters? Everyday there is a chance of being killed by some crazy Inmate.

Damn... duty calls.... will post back here later.

Victims whims are no basis for justice or punishment, we should get away from the notion of siding with the victim at the expense of logical, objective justice.

As such, making these people suffer further humiliation, pain etc is unacceptable imo.
