	It wasn't a Commandore 64, it was a COMMODORE 64! Support Apolyton, buy Call to Power 2

Yes, this is a thread about the classic computer of ages, before we had all these fancy "PCs" and what have you. Of course, to my generation it's a source of hazily-remembered nostalgia, considering that it was already on it's way out when we started coming of age, but I had a Commodore 64 for some time of my childhood. I remember playing Rick Dangerous with it, and even trying to program a little gamelette of my own. (A Space Invaders variant, basically. The programming effort proceeded remarkably well considering I was 10 years old or so, but in the end it didn't work and I didn't know why.)

But anyway, one thing I remember is that many people had a habit of calling it "Commandore 64". Goddammit, it's not a Commandore - it's a Commodore! I realize this is not one of the most burning subjects, but I bet some people still remember their "Commandore". WTF caused the particular "Commandore" word twisting, anyway? Was "Commando" that popular a game with C64? Also, did people say "Commandore" outside Finland?

Dragons of Krynn

That thing went through 3 disk drives in 4 years, though.

favourite games (they were also released on other computers such as apple and PC) But the C64 had excellent sound and graphics. Better than Apple at the time.

I've always called it Commodore, never heard anyone call it something else...


How old where you guys, when you got your first computer? I was only 6... One of the games I played the most, was Boulder Dash...

I don't know if I did at the time when I was a C64 freak, but I do hate the sound of the word "Commandore" now. Fortunately all senseful people called it "Kuuslankku" ("six-board") anyway. But Stefu, from this moment onwards you will be my mortal enemy for reminding me of the existence of that vile word.

I remember the thrill of upgrading to a C-64 from the earlier model. I was impressed.
I actually had a 5 1/4 floppy drive to attach to it. And one of those cassette decks. The ones that would take 60 minutes to load a tiny game program. Which would fail to load and you'd have to reload it again and again.

Oooh, I almost forgot: The Seven Cities of Gold.

I remember the tape player thingy, but do not recall ever using it. The 5 1/4 drive was pretty much it for me. I remember Ultima V having a ridiculous number of disks (like 8).

No one played Elite? The best game ever. Took 15 minutes to load on tape. When I bought a drive it took only about two. Wow, that was fast!

I just did a google searcg for "Commandore 64". A very high percentage of the results were in Scandinavian and Dutch. A mystery indeed.


I didn't have a Commandore/Commodore but I played quite al ot at a friends house. The favourites were some ninja game I've forgotten the name of and Green Beret.

We didn't have a mouse and diskdrive until I was 8, so I mostly only knew how to use joystick and tape-drive

We started out with a tape drive. I remember games like Bruce Lee used to take about 30 mintues to load. You had to be careful not to bump it, or make any sudden movements or the game wouldn't load

going from a tape to the floppy disc was like heaven on earth. What a world of difference.

And yes I forgot Seven cities of gold. That game kicks all ass.
