"Gay HS" reality check Support Apolyton, buy Alpha Centauri

Well, when people posted some time ago a piece about a gay HS about to be established in NYC, I stated it was probably a bad idea. Well, maybe at the time, it would have been nice to know that the report was begun by the NY Post (akin to the Sun in england). Actually, the school has been around since the mid-80's. Here is a very informative piece on it:

quote:

A Safe Haven Finds Itself Under Siege
By MICHAEL WINERIP

"I WAS always different," Dino Portalatin said. "A few years ago, when I was 15, I went back to visit my old elementary school, P.S. 169. They're like, 'Did you come out yet?' I said, `You knew then?' They said, `Oh yeah.' "

He was a little boy who preferred playing with dolls. "There's these photos of me," he said, "my legs crossed like a school girl and a big cheesy smile." In middle school it was no big deal, he said; he was popular. But things changed at Franklin Roosevelt High in Brooklyn. He told a few friends the truth, and then it took just one ex-friend to spread the news among the 3,500 students.

"People were like, 'That's the faggot,' " he said. To hold onto his popularity, he recalled, he became the bad kid, heckling teachers, fighting kids who insulted him. "I was knocked blind just once," he said. "I was conscious, I just couldn't see anything."

He went from honor roll to delinquent. He threw a table at school, cracked a door off its hinges, skipped classes for weeks, was given a diagnosis of depression, shredded a couch at home with a knife. His mother, a day-care worker and single parent, took him to a hospital clinic. "I saw a therapist there," Dino said. "He told me about Hetrick-Martin. He said it's a place for people like you. I said, Puerto Rican people? He said, Gay youth."

Starting in the mid-1980's, the Hetrick-Martin Institute, a nonprofit agency in Greenwich Village that serves gay youngsters, has operated a small public school, the Harvey Milk School, that accepted gay students who had either dropped out or couldn't cope at a mainstream high school. A few arrived after suicide attempts — gay teenagers are three times more likely to attempt suicide than straights, according to the National Mental Health Association. More often, like Carlos Diaz at La Guardia High in Manhattan, a school for the performing arts, they just got worn out by the verbal abuse.

Jose Irizarry could no longer stand being mute. "At my other schools, I didn't hide it, but I didn't tell anyone," Jose said. "I didn't feel it was safe to tell. I stayed to myself. I was always living under pressure. I couldn't concentrate. My grades dropped."

At Harvey Milk, he said, "I put my guard down. All I had to concentrate on was learning."

Jose, Dino and Carlos all said they never would have graduated from high school without Harvey Milk. And it kills them now to see the school under attack.

One of the best things about New York City public high schools is their enormous variety, giving children a chance to find a niche. There are elite schools for future Ivy Leaguers and vocational schools for the skilled trades. There are five international schools serving 2,300 students who must be immigrants to attend. And five sites around the city for pregnant girls only — 600 attended last year. For children too severely handicapped to be in mainstream classes, New York City has 56 schools exclusively for the disabled. There is also the Young Woman's Leadership School in Harlem, serving 370 girls, part of a network of same-sex public schools that includes all-girls schools in Chicago and Philadelphia and an all-boys school in Philadelphia.

But of late, the only one catching heat is little Harvey Milk. It started last month with front page ("Gay High") coverage by The New York Post — big play, considering the news: that the city was spending $3.2 million (of a $43 billion budget) to expand the 20-year-old program to 170 students by 2004 from 70 now.

As the story rocketed worldwide, it assumed cartoon form. Before students can attend Harvey Milk, they must have the consent of a parent or guardian, but Mike Long, New York's Conservative Party chairman, warned of defenseless children being shanghaied. "We're not doing a confused ninth grader any favors by plucking him out of his school and shipping him off to some gay academy of social engineering," Mr. Long wrote in The Daily News.

School officials estimate that 25 percent of Harvey Milk students are transgender, meaning the child may physically be a boy but feels and behaves like a girl. The idea that such students might be harassed at a mainstream high school struck Mr. Long as hilarious. "What's next?" he wrote. "How about a special school for chubby kids?"

The majority of students at Harvey Milk are poor, 10 percent are in foster care, 75 percent are black or Latino. And yet in filing suit last week to block financing for the school, State Senator Ruben Diaz Sr., Democrat of the Bronx, complained that resources were being diverted from poor black and Hispanic children. Others, including The New York Times's editorial page, praised Harvey Milk as well-intentioned but argued that the answer was not a segregated school, but to make all schools safe for gays.

If only that day were close at hand. Neither the mayor nor the schools chancellor thinks it is; both strongly support Harvey Milk. Nor does Dr. Anna Maria Thomas, a longtime teacher at Boys and Girls High, a large (3,300 students) mainstream school in Manhattan.

"At our school, prejudice is big," Dr. Thomas said. "I bumped into a student on the street. I said, `How come I don't see you?' He says, `I was always being beaten up in the boys locker room.' I said, `What do you mean?' He says, `I'm gay.' "

Gail Miller, a social worker recently retired from the High School of Graphic Communication Arts (1,600 students) in Manhattan referred about 15 gay students a year to the Hetrick-Martin after-school program. About two a year transferred to Harvey Milk.

"They're kids who just can't figure out how to fit in," Ms. Miller said. "Without Harvey Milk, they'd drop out."

Thousands of New York gay children get by in mainstream schools. They're comfortable being themselves, or they mute themselves or hide who they are. For whatever reason, a smaller number cannot find a place, and Harvey Milk becomes their niche. Jose Irizarry, who graduated in June, will enter John Jay College this fall and plans to be a lawyer. After Harvey Milk, Carlos Diaz became a Continental Airlines flight attendant.

When Carlos came out to his mother in high school, he recalled, "she said, `You're sick.' But she came around — after a couple of years."

While Mrs. Diaz was getting used to a new Carlos, he said, it was nice to have a place to fit in.

I told people from the start that I think it's a good idea, a lot of kids just get sh*t from their immature classmates for being gay. For some people it gets bad enough that they have to drop out, or otherwise are academically and socially at a huge disadvantage over it.

Offering a school as a safe haven (I used those exact words before, too) is a good thing, and the people who try to stop it aren't being very sympathetic. A lot of them don't make a lot of sense, like saying it's the start of segregation again. Hello FUD, welcome.

I'm still not supportive of the idea of seperate schools for gay people... I think that only reinforces the prejudice that there is something wrong with them... however... if it acts as a safe haven for kids to peacefully finish high school... I would support it.

But this raises another issue. There is something wrong with the mainstream school system if school officials can't curtail such bullying.

You can't tame homphobic children in a school environment, it's just not possible.

Homosexuals are a rather small minority, most of them in the closet in high school so it appears even smaller, and much of the teachers themselves aren't very sympathetic.

It's simply unrealistic at this point in time to expect regular schools to simply stop it.

The solution? Harvey Milk.

I still don't think seperate schools are the solution. High Schools need to crack down and show no tolerance for bullies in there schools.

Separation is not the answer -- trained, sympathetic counselors at ordinary high schools are the answer to the problem described in the above article.

That's not reality right now of course in many ordinary high schools, but if we can improve towards that, then separation will indeed be foolish if not counter-productive towards acceptance of all non-heterosexual teenagers.

nah... never underestimate the power of brainwashing and socialization...

Judging from the revelation about the truth of this school, I think it would be a good idea to offer these safe havens. But I don't think we should give up on trying to create a peaceful environment for kids to learn.

The reality is that Western society is progressing more into accepting non-heterosexuals into mainstream society.

Aren't gay-straight alliances in all high schools on the rise?

Aren't gays increasingly exposed in positive, affirming ways in the mainstream media?

Isn't there an American presidential candidate running, who has openly affirmed non-heterosexual Americans as citizens deserving of respect?

So I think you might need a reality check.

No, they are not write offs. A more immediate effort we can make, due to the progressiveness I mentioned in society, is that we may be able to replace those counselors that are utterly unfit for their job in high schools.

Replace those old-time counselors who were given the job by their local community red necks, with local, qualified people who actually have some kind of degree and pratical experience in counseling.

As the article states, NYC has separate HS programs for: immigrants, pregnant kids, Troubled children, special ed kids, and all girl schools. NYC has 1 million kids, with a budget of well over 10 billion: this is a program fro 70 (perhaps to be exanded to 170) kids, many of which come from hard circusmtances, including being on the verge of droping out. If this small porgram can help these kids, then let it continue and flourish.

As for the notion of ending bullying in a school system this vast, with many schools that have well over 3000 students each...YEAH RIGHT.

If the government can set aside money and bureaucratic effort to create a special school, it can do more to combat bullying in its own schools. More supervision of hallways, harsh zero-tolerance policies for repeat bullies and a strong effort to relay the message that bullying won't be tolerated could do alot.

As it stands, what are they doing is taking action to protect some victims of bullying, but ignoring other victims. That isn't right.

Making another school in unused office space for teens who were forced out of school by bullies is not the same thing as hiring more people to watch the halls. And hall-watching isn't exactly effective.

There's more to it than just on the school grounds, it's after school too -- it's on the way home, it's on the way to school, it's the people you associate with.

And let's face it, the kind of people that you'd have to pay to watch the halls for bullying probably aren't too enlightened -- and I very much doubt many of them give a damn about checking to see what everyone's whispering about.

Really, all the extra hall monitors going to prevent people from whispering "faggot"? Are they going to force people to make friends with the "faggot"?

It's a half-assed idea, and it's not going to work. Eventually, society will come around. Until then, the kids who are getting the extreme shaft from bigots at school should get a haven. They have a right to learn, too.

yeah, and spending cuts and abandoning public schools for unconstitutional faith based initiatives doesn't help the matter... and school officials don't give a ****... teachers have to worry about shitty pay, overcrowded classrooms, old books, apathetic students, and dipshit parents... wtf makes you think they are going to have enough time to worry about who is calling who "gay"?

You know, Black students at the time of integration faced extremely vicious bullying from their peers at the time of integration. Should that have justified continued segregation?

Not forced. But if black students were being constantly tormented to the point of having to drop out, etc -- I'd love for them to have had a special school they could've gone to so they can continue getting the education they have a right to.

Look. Schoolkids aren't strong ideological homophobes. They don't read Chick Tracts or the like for the most part. Anti-homosexual bullying is a syptom of a general intolerance of people who don't fit the mold. Homosexuals, while often among the worst targets, are far from the only being terrorized and tormeneted in schools. It is a half-assed solution to try to save some victims but leaving others to suffer. The effort should not be made to only save a sub-section of the victim population, but to try to make it better for everyone.

Shi, I'm going to ignore the fact that you're ignoring that some schools, and some kids, have a real problem for it.

We're not talking wholesale segregation, 170 kids in the entire New York Public School System can attend the newly-expanded school.

Most gay teens don't need to go there, but some do.

You win my inaugural "no ****" award.

It is nice to make it better for everyone, but you can't force that by adding hall monitors or whatever else you think would be a bright idea. Given time, society opens up more to it.
