Dumb move. Did he not remember that Osbourne had the tag (for over a decade) of not being able to win the big game? IIRC, Nebraska went 7 straight years without a bowl win and the guy still kept his job.

Osborne still managed to recruit quality players even when he was in his dry spells. Solich, OTOH, can't recruit, which is why he was fired. Nebraska simply doesn't have the talent right now to compete with Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas State and others and that problem needs to be addressed, right now. I think this is a good move. Just a little surprised at the timing.

Hire a better recruiter. Coach can't do everything, and while a coach has to recruit somebody has to set the stage for him.

They did, last season. That's why the timing seems weird. Every other coaching position was cleaned out last year, but Frankie stayed on. This move seems like a completion of the house cleaning of last year. Makes me wonder why Pederson didn't just fire Solich after last season.

I don't know if I would be more embarrassed being an Auburn alum or a Neb. alum after their behaviors. Luckily I'm neither and can just laugh at their incompetence. 9-3!!!! What a friggin joke.

Well, right, two of their losses were not entirely competitive, (the third merely a gorgeous fourth quarter implosion) I can see with the pedigree why he would get the boot, losing to the two best teams they faced all year and beating the bad-mediocre ones leaves a bit to be desired. What was their best win, Okla state?

Still its ridiculous, 75% of the teams in the country would kill to be 9-3 looking at the holiday or whatever bowl.

That 75% of teams aren't comparable to Nebraska. We're one of the top programs in the sport, not some mediocre squad happy to make a bowl now and again. Getting embarassed by good but not great teams like Texas and KSU shows that Nebraska isn't on the level it should be, so something had to change.

Goodbye, Frank. You're a good man, but I can't say I'll miss you.

I would feel the same way if I was a Nebraska fan, but to the much of the outside world, it looks ridiculous.

Frankly its amazing to me that they won 9 games with lord as a qb, one would think the prestige of Neb could draw in a semi competent passer

Well, we agree on this, at least. Thank god for Bo Pellini.

Prestige is no substitute for competent recruiting. QB is just the most glaring example of the talent falloff that has happened at Nebraska since Solich took over.

Fah! Our recruiting has closed off the state borders to GA's best and not-so-brightest. Our coaching staff has learned at the hands of one of the best, if not the best, program builder of the past 25 years, and our defense is even better than our offense - even with last years SEC Offensive Player of the Year still on the team.

BRING 'EM ON!!!!

re: Nebraska, it'd be like Florida firing Ron Zook after this year. Just utterly silly. I can see Nebraska heading down the path of Alabama in the late 90s, early 00s (maybe without the probation) pretty soon. Or at least, Oklahoma from Switzer to Stoops.

Both have 3 losses this year . After following HoF Coaches who won a bunch of national championships. Yeah, the main difference is Solich actually WENT to a national championship game!

Unless you are getting Bob Stoops to leave OU for Nebraska (or someone of that stature), this move doesn't make much sense.

The funny thing about it is that Tennessee could possibly end up in a better bowl than Georgia if the Tigers make them look bad. Fulmer is holding out hope for a BCS bowl (Slim chance) and the Capital One Bowl is staying mum on the subject. If Georgia looses badly then it may drop them to the Outback bowl. Strange system we have working, isn't it?

Nebraska's move is a gutsy one. IMHO, it could go eithier way. Showing that strong a committment to winning is pretty strong however.

And last. And the year before that. And the year prior to that.

When you think about GA's W-L record against TN over the past four years, do you prefer to think of your team as being 0-for-the-Century or 0-for-the-Millennium?

Just a' wonderin...

He's also been there for six years and has overseen a huge drop in talent from the Osborne era. Don't forget that Solich made his title run with Osborne's last recruiting class. All in all, the situation is nothing like Zook's if you actually take an in-depth look at the two.

quote:
So, Nebraska fans are willing to wait a couple, three years for a new coach to build his own system?

Solich was never going to lead Nebraska back to the top; he was a bad leader and a horrible recruiter. Best to dump him now and start the rebuilding as soon as possible. What's the benefit of waiting?

Do we really need a Whatever Bowl? Who would be the sponsor, WhataBurger?

I have long been a proponent of a Dust Bowl where the the two last ranked teams compete to determine just who the absolute worst team in the nation is.
